The woman who burned was Mrs. Polly Heard Braswell, wife of Jacob Green Braswell, Jr. Jacob's brother, Abner Cicero Braswell was married to Josephine Ward, daughter of Andrew and Charlotte Ward. Her obituary was printed in the Macon Daily Telegraph on February 5 and on February 6, 1926.
Rutland district is in the southern part of Bibb County, just south of the Macon city limits. The major thoroughfare in that area is Houston Road (GA HWY 11)which leads off from US 129/GA 247 at the end of "seven bridges" intersection and connects with GA HWY 49 several miles down the road. Please feel free to ask more questions if you need to do so. : ----- Original Message ----- : From: <DaisyZ@aol.com> : To: <GABIBB-L@rootsweb.com> : Sent: Tuesday, January 11, 2005 9:32 AM : Subject: [GABIBB] Rutland District of Bibb County : : ::I have started researching the Cowart family of Bibb, and I've found that :: they lived in the Rutland District. Recently Tony got married and Tig loaned him 75 cents to help him buy the marriage license and had never paid the money back. Yesterday the brothers commenced fussing about the debt, with the result as above stated. After the killing Tony did not try to escape, but surrendered himself to the coroner when that official came to hold the inquest. The verdict of the coroners jury was murder. Cummings was brought to the city and placed in jail. Cummings claims that his brother was advancing upon him with a razor and he had to shoot him in self defense. Strozier, a well known citizen of Macon, dropped dead yesterday afternoon at 5 oclock at Centenary church during service. He was standing behind the altar rail singing in the choir and was singing the hymn called Lord, I Am Coming Home, while mourners were coming up to the altar kneeling in prayer. Just as the words, Lord, I am coming home passed the lips of Mr. Strozier, he was sent to totter and fall up against the pulpit and catch at it with his hands as it to sustain himself. He fell dead to the floor, never speaking a word. The congregation at first thought he had only fainted. Services were suspended and he was picked up, carried out and laid on the grass in the rear of the church. Dr. Ward, the first physician to reach him said Mr. Strozier had died instantly. Heart disease was presumably the cause, though he had never suffered from it and was in his usual good health today. Mr. Strozier was about 35 years old and leaves a wife and two children, also two brothers, Charles and John. John Strozier, who is a bookkeeper at the Exchange bank, was in the church kneeling in prayer when his brother died. The deceased was in the service of the Central railroad running between Macon and Savannah. He was a consistent member of the First Street Methodist church. Today it still is mostly commercial. City Hall is located at the top of Poplar Street, as is the Catholic and Baptist churches. Currently Poplar Street is going through a transition - many medical offices are moving in as well as new businesses. Several years ago there was a nation-wide contest to redesign historic Poplar Street in Macon and architect Walter Hood from California was chosen. The redesign with new market-type areas as opposed to parking lots is almost complete. I believe that the part of Poplar your ancestor resided in is at the other end of Poplar from City Hall. It would probably be nearer Broadway (also called Martin Luther King Blvd.).
