Cindy, Right after I sent the prior message I picked up the following information at the State of Georgia Archives (url shown below). "Reform Medical College of Georgia. The Reform-Medical Practice, with a History of Medicine, from the Earliest Period to the Present Time and a Synopsis of the Principles on which the New Practice is Founded. Macon: M.S. Thompson, 1857. (RB R 131 .R43) " http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/rs/hpr.htm It appears you would need to visit the archives to see the book. There may be other references in their library. I just found the above note and stopped. Joan
Cindy, I don't know how much this will help but I found some info on a medical college in "The History of Macon Georgia 1823-1949" Pg. 130 "Macon was also the site of the Reform Medical College (from Nov. issue ((1846)) of the Georgia Telegraph.)" Pg. 176 (1856) "Macon was also the site of a Medical College during this period. The Reform Medical College commenced its 18th annual course of lectures during November. The college had previously received two endowments from the State of Georgia and had a splendid college edifice with apparatus, specimens, facilities and a hospital for clinical instruction. Ample cadavers were procured from New York. The six qualified physicians who composed the faculty included Dr. L. Bankson, M.D., Professor of Physiology, Pathology, and Materia Medica; Dr. J. T. Coxe, M.D., Professor of The Principles and Practice of Medicine and Therapeutics; Dr. M. S. Thomson, M.D., Professor of Obstretrics and Diseases of Women and children; Dr. I. N. Loomis, A.M., M.D., Professor of Chemistry, Botany, Pharmacy, and Microscopy; Dr. I. M. Coming, A.M., M.D., Professor of Anatomy and Surgery; and Dr. O. A. Cochrane, M.D., Professor of Medical Jurisprudence, Comparative Anatomy, and Comparative Physiology. (from Georgia Telegraph, September, 1856)." Pg. 409 "In the summer of 1880 the trustees of the Macon Free School purchased the Medical College building on Mulberry Street, remodeled it to adapt it to school purposes, and turned it over to the Board of Education to accommodate the public school ....was named in honor of L. N. Whittle." I would scan and send to you but the book is rather fragile at this point and I don't want to bend it more than necessary. I can't help but wonder about the statement "ample cadavers were procured from New York"??? Why New York? I might add that I looked in the book "History of Macon and Central Georgia" by Butler and found no mention of a medical college. Ca. 1850-1880. I'm only sure about his name. I'm seeking living members of his family.
Can you tell me if James T. Kirkham was first married to Ann Mays? "Heirs of Ann Kirkham" are listed in the probate of Ann's father's estate in Pontotoc County, MS, in 1855. Settlement in 1861 includes J. T. Kirkham. Stephen Mays, the father, and several of his children migrated to Mississippi from Cass County, GA. There is a Norbin M. Kirkham b. 1846 d. 1856 listed in the White West section of Cemeteries of Cass County. Could this be the son of Ann and James? Ann had a brother named Norbin. Would appreciate any help on this family. Ann
