Question: What happened to all the "obits" that used to be on the county pages? Try this. http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec?htx=board&r=rw&p=localities.northam.usa.states.georgia.counties.macon This is a very long address, so you may have to copy and paste it into your browser. **This URL is for Macon.....but you would substitute any county name. When you're on that page... JUST before the queries actually begin... CHANGE the "View Message Type: box to: Obituary. You have to use the arrow to scroll down. Then, as soon as you choose it should pull up ALL the Obituaries. You can do the same thing for any category, i.e. Bible, Cemetery, Pension POSTERS NAME While you're there, CLICK on anyone's name....and you will see the listing of EVERYTHING the person has ever posted by County and State. Macon has a very long list....in fact, you'll need to click NEXT on the lower right hand side....it takes you to the rest of them. Let me know how this works for you..... We want to help people get comfortable with these new boards... there are lots of +s to their use. Please ask a question about anything that you can't work on the Boards, or don't understand. I found it interesting that you are looking for Doyle & Dillard Stancel. My father was George Dillard and he had a brother named Doyle. Doyle is a very different name. I find nothing for him but your line. Probably no connection but interesting. My Dillards stem from Kentucky and Indianna as far as I know. Their father was Tom Dillard. My dad-Geo. was born in 1903 in Dawson Springs, KY if that means anything. Good luck in your search. joanne

Thanks to Joan and Annie for your help. The interesting thing is I thought I would look to see if I could find the book at Amazon and several of the books on Macon have the index online. I just searched on Macon Georgia and one of my Heard cousins has an entire book about her Findlay ancestors to peruse. Is anyone aware of a book about Macon Georgia and Bibb County that shows where people lived or has photos of old homes. I would like to know where Green Wilder lived in the Warrior District and where his homeplace may have been. Also does anyone know of a museum in Macon which might have photos of old political rallies or old oils of Macon's families? Thanks Gaila
There are two books I know of about Macon. One is History of Macon and Central Georgia by Butler and the other is History of Macon, Georgia 1823-1949 by Young, Gholson and Hargrove. I bought mine from e-bay but I know the Butler book is sometimes found at book sites like http://www.alibris.com. I checked the indexes and could not find the name Wilder in either book. The History of Macon, Georgia book does not have a really good index so there still may be something in that book. Good luck, Joan On Sun, 11 Nov 2001 06:56:12 -0800 "Anne & Pete Bowie" <[email protected]> writes: > Yes, the book is called Macon, Georgia's Central City. Yes, the book is called Macon, Georgia's Central City. It is out of print and I have been trying to find one new or used for a couple of years now. If anyone has one that they are willing to sell please e-mail me at [email protected] and if I can afford the price, I'll buy it from you. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/bibb.htm We have just added more regiments for Bibb County. Hope you can locate an ancestor in these lists. Remember IF you have anything to contribute, please send it to me. With all volunteers working, we are really getting more data on-line for GA. I'm sure you must have something you could also contribute. Just take the time to dig it out of your files, type it up and send it to me. It is sure to help someone else... Virginia Crilley

Here's a wonderful example of a "bio"---and I hope it inspires others to do the same. This one was written around 1910---BUT, I'd like to see individuals create "bios" (really just a story) from the research that you've put together so far on your ancestors. (After all we never really complete all our research, and this is a great way to help others in the mean time!) After all if this person hadn't written this down in 1910, we wouldn't have it today! This involves, Jones, Bibb, Talbot and several AL counties as well. TALBOT COUNTY GA Bio of John R Gilbert File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by [email protected] Susan Banton ftp://ftp.rootsweb.com/pub/usgenweb/ga/talbot/bio/gilbert.txt Table of Contents page: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/talbot.htm Georgia Table of Contents: http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/gafiles.htm JOHN RODOLPHUIS GILBERT John Rodolphuis Gilbert was born in Bibb County Georgia July 8, 1833. He was the son of Edmund Albert born in Jones County, Ga., 1812 and Ann Elizabeth Douglas, his wife, born near Morgan County Ga in 1818; he is the son of Edmund Gilbert, a native of Virginia, who moved to Georgia in an early day, whose wife was a Miss Johnson (Transcriber note: Amy Johnson Garret,) of Virginia, first cousin of Henry Clay. (Transcriber note: Not a first cousin, but a second, I have some of that lineage) The maternal grandfather was Samuel Douglas who died in Morgan County Ga. The father of your subject (JR) moved from Bibb County Ga when J.R. was quite young to Talbot County, Georgia, five miles east of Talbotton where he remained about ten years. He then moves to Tallapoosa County Alabama in January 1847 where he died in 1895 aged 83 years and ten months, his wife dying in 1885 at age of 67 years. Eleven children were born to them of whom three are living. JR being the oldest of the family. The elder Gilbert was a Whig in ante-bellum days becoming a Democrat after the war. He lived on one farm nearly fifty years; Mrs. Gilbert was a Missionary Baptist. John R. Gilbert was educated in the common schools, while working on the farm and began teaching at the age of 22. He enlisted in 1862 in the 19th Arkansas Infantry and served until he was discharged on account of ill health. He has moved to Arkansas in 1859 where he has been teaching and in the drug business prior to his enlistment. After the war he was engaged in teaching in Tallapoosa County for two years later going into the mercantile business at Fisher Pond for two more years. He then went to Pinkneyville, Clay County, Alabama where he followed mercantile business and farming for 34 years. In 1902 he moved to Goodwater and built the Gilbert warehouses, which he now owns. He owns a large amount of land in Clay County but has retired from active business. In early days he was Whig and a "Know Nothing" but since the war he has been identified with the Democratic Party. He was made a Mason in Nixburg Lodge Coosa County in 1857 and is a member of Hillabee Chapter Royal Arch Masons and of Hillabee lodge No 197, Fine and accepted Masons. He and his wife are members of the Missionary Baptist Church. He was married December 20, 1866 to Martha Elizabeth Gibson, daughter of Col L.A. Gibson of Clay County. She died Aug 6, 1881; eight children were born to them; Minnie Elizabeth, Cora Love, Albert Edmund (deceased) Annie Laurie, Daisy (deceased) Georgia Bell, Lola Pearl and Maud Estelle (deceased). Mr. Gilbert was again married on Feb 8 1885 to Ella M. Mayo of La Grange Ga. They had three children: Thalia (deceased) John Rudolph and Boyd. Mr. Gilbert is one of the well-to-do men of Goodwater and accumulated his own property. Notes: This was written prior to 1910 by my GG Aunt's husband. It is pencil and appears to be an early genealogical report. I have found little evidence disputing this account. I hope it is appropriate. And I hope I did it OK. The list is on file at the Genealogical and Historical Room of Washington Memorial Library. You can write to check for your relative's name. You may also want to ask for a copy of the obituary which may have appeared in the newspaper, the Macon Telegraph. The address is Washington Memorial Library/ Genealogical and Historical Room/ 1180 Washington Avenue/ Macon, Georgia 31201-1790. You may prefer to send an e-mail request. You can get the e-mail address by going to the website for the Middle Georgia Regional Library. I don't remember the e-mail address or the website, but you'll have no trouble finding it through Alta Vista or Dogpile or Yahoo or any other search engine. The Macon Parks and Recreation Department, which is the department that oversees city-owned cemeteries, will probably refer you to the library. Christopher Stokes
