Shirley, It would really be fantastic if you would publish your Empire Cemetery list online. Martha
Tim, The best pace to look in Tifton is at the Bowen Donaldson's Funeral Home. He has records that go pretty far back but I'm not sure how far back. I have been there and looked through his records before but it has been awhile. Another source is the Berrien county newspaper. You have to go to the Tifton Gaz. and leave your drivers license then go across the street to the library to look through the records on their machine's if you want a copy of whatever you find. The library might have their own copy of the newspaper by now, I haven't looked in awhile. This paper goes back to the late 1800's. I found a mention of Benjamin Lindsey's death in this paper. You have to guess on the dates you want to look through because news traveled a little slower back then. It could be in the paper a few days later or a week later. I wish I had time to look through the papers and list all the deaths I come across. Sounds like a good project for the summer. LOL. I haven't heard from you in a while. I wondered how you were doing on your research. I'll try to see what I can come up with to help you. 1862 might have been a little to early for the Berrien County Newspaper. I have been tring to get to Nashville for awhile now to go through some records there. It's a shame that I only live 30 miles away and can't get over there. I'm under the impression that proper records didn't start in GA till about 1919. Do you have to go to the papers themselves, or would the local libraries have these records? Any other way to find records of death? She may have died at childbirth, in 1862, in Berrien County, Nashville, GA) > > I'm trying to find the parents of Joseph Harrell, b. abt. 1862, died Jan 22, 1906 near or in Tifton, GA. It is possible that his parents were William and Flora Ann Harrell who came to Georgia in about 1853 with 3 children. In 1870 census, it appears that their children are in foster homes (Three girls in Berrien. Joseph appears to have been raised by the Lindsey's, some of which moved to Worth County by 1870). Which could be consistent with Joseph's mother dying in childbirth about 1862. > > Mine, maybe the only Harrell family not well documented in south Georgia. rbowen3, I cant help you a whole lot other than to empathize with you on Empire Cemetery. I have been there a few times and the graves are really packed in there. By the way, the cemetery is in Lanier County, not Berrien County. I know a person who goes there but as for having an organized listing of the cemetery I do not know of one in captivity. Since you already have the death certificate you probably have the pertinent info on James Bennett Bowen. I looked in the Berrien County cemetery book and there are only 5 Bowen names listed there. One other thingy, There is a Bowen's Mill at Ray City, GA which is just inside Berrien County and not far from the Empire Church (across the woods). Do you think this might be some of the same family? Exodus XXI Verse:16 - Charles T.
