Sarah, I came from Cook County, at Adel. The year that Ed Rivers lost the governors race, Lanier County, and Cook County was the only 2 counties in Georgia out of a 159 counties, that went for Ed. No. I don't have any relatives around Lakeland. and just about all my family, in Georgia, is gone. Bill

I even saw a picture in that book of my Grandfather, "HAMP" HOWELL, who d in 1919 in Milltown - he died before I was born & don't think I ever saw a picture of him before, so that was a touching one to find in the book..... Rivers was quite popular there in that area due to all he did to im-prove the area's roads in particular.....I think my Aunt "Beth" had some sort of big reception for him after he was elected - this was held at hers & Uncle Henry's house [ELIZABETH "Beth" (HOWELL) JONES & HENRY H. JONES (their home was the Lakeland Hotel.) Are you kin to any HOWELLs; LAMBs; CARROLLs; LOVEJOYs; TALLEYs from there? I saw a lot of STUDSTILLs in the cemetery across from First Baptist Ch in Lakeland, but those are not my husb's direct line - this was a bro, HUSTUS STUDSTILL's who mar RACHEL (SIRMANS) - & was a bro to my husb's GGG-Grandfather... My father, Charles Ansley Williams Sr. , was born to John Ansel Williams and Mae Devane Williams, on April 2, 1905. His two uncles on his mother's side, Willie DeVane, (either a doctor or lawyer in Valdosta, and Charles Ansley Devane lived in or around Ray City or Nashville. I'm trying to find their old home place somewhere near the banks of Withlacoochee creek or river. near Ray City. If anyone knows of this family, please respond. John and Mae, and seven children moved sometime around 1923 Thank you, Cleve Williams...
Sarah, Thanks for your message. I also remember when they drained Banks (Pond) Lake at Lakeland, and paid a fee to enter and fish at that event. This was in the 1940's I believe. I also remember Ed Rivers (ex Governor of Georgia) who's home was Lakeland. Bill

You could say that "I Remember Pearl Harbor." > Bill > I'd like to add my thanks to you, Bill for your service for all of us & for sharing your memory of that time...... I lost a cousin in the South Pacific, HENRY WILL JONES, Capt USMC during that war..... He was born in what was then Milltown, Berrien Co, GA (now Lakeland, Lanier Co, GA) to parents, ELIZABETH (HOWELL) JONES & HENRY H. JONES, both dec'd. A few years ago, Jay Shaw, GA Rep., in the GA House introduced a Resolution which was passed, naming a bridge over the Alapaha River (between Homerville & Lakeland) for HENRY WILL JONES. There was a dedication ceremony for this & only wish I'd known in time to go...... This bridge is just a mile or so from his old home, which was the Lakeland Hotel, owned by his parents - ELIZABETH (HOWELL) JONES, or Aunt "Beth" as she to me, ran the boarding house which seemed so huge to me when I was a child, when we would visit down in Lakeland, she was my Dad's sister......Now the house is owned by their other son, Robert Jones & wife, Peggy who have made it into their home....It's a beautiful old place w/huge oak tree w/Spanish moss hanging on it's limbs.....There used to be teachers who boarded there during the school year, also railroad people when it was being built - also my Uncle WILL HOWELL & Aunt Ruby (Darsey) lived there - Uncle Will had the drugstore there.... If we don't remember, we are likely to repeat the errors of the past & we need to pass on to our children & grandchildren our memories before we forget also! Thanks again, Bill - also thanks to one who posted Sue Hancock's ph number - does anyone know if she has an email? ttyl, Sarah Howell Studstill

Lee, I purchased my copy about two years ago from the Probate Judge's Office at the Berrien County Courthouse. I'm not sure at this later period in time, if they still have copies for sale. I don't have Sue's email address but her telephone number is 229-831-7105. She lives in Irwinville, GA. Shirley
Bill, Thank you for sharing your personal memory of Pearl Harbor with us. Thank you from my heart, for your service to this country. Sharon I remember the radio Broadcasts announcing Pearl Harbor, and was dumbfounded. The next day, as a 9th grader in School in South Georgia, I remember the teachers bringing radios to school, and we listened to Franklin Delano Roosevelt, asking Congress to declare a declaration of war against the Japanese, and later that day against Germany and Italy. A historical moment in my life, and I served in the U.S. Navy before the war was over. You could say that "I Remember Pearl Harbor." Bill

The following 2 emails to the list interested me because of the Hall names. Was the cemetery where the Halls were buried Beaverdam in Ray City? Also interested in who the Alfred Smith may have been. My husbands ggg grandmother was Lavina Smith who married James Lee. One of James and Lavina Lee's daughters ( Cassie or Cassandra ) married John L. Hall and they had a son named Allen who married a Margaret ( Clements or Fender ). Could Alfred Smith been related to Lavina? anne Subj: [GABERRIE] Berrien County Cemeteries ListingĀ Date: 12/2/2003 1:19:13 AM Eastern Standard Time From: s_blanks@bellsouth.net Reply-to: GABERRIE-L@rootsweb.com To: GABERRIE-L@rootsweb.com Sent from the Internet (Details) This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. I am trying to locate an Alfred Smith that is listed in the 1920 and 1930 (age 72) censuses as a boarder living in the household of Allen L. Hall. He was born in North Carolina and all that is known about him is that he went to Georgia. Thank you. In other words if a person had a headstone, a footstone and/or a military marker with info on it then all of them were included. Most likely it should have only been listed once to avoid any confusion.

Once in the unmarked graves section (pp. 144-45) there is an Ashley Marvin Rawlins b: 6/14/1852 d: 8/25/1938 and on page 113 there is noted an Ashley Marion Rawlins with dates of 1850-1938. No reference to a wife with his name that I could find. Jimmy

I'm looking for a gravesite of my Great-grandfather's brother, A. M. (Ashley Marion) Rawlins d. 1938 and his wife. I'd like to know what his wife's name is and if her maiden name is listed. I have an old obit that a newly contacted cousin sent to me, but I'm not sure if it's from the Berrien County newspaper or from the Dodge County newspaper (the county where he was born). Any info would be helpful. Thank you. Sheila
Here is an interesting genealogy story from North Carolina. Bladen Journal http://www.bladenjournal.com/articles/2003/11/28/news/news06.txt Wonder how much has been lost forever in situations like this, where the treasure wasn't discovered in time? Or by someone who cared enough to salvage it and get it to a place that could preserve it? Sharon
