1. [GABARTOW] James R. Freeman, Bartow County GA
2. Mike
3. HI Folks! I was doing some research for a friend and thought I would share my findings with you in case James is in your line. James served in the 63rd Company I GA INF during the Civil War and was elgible for the veterans pension that was declared in 1910. I found Lavina's application for pension in 1910! James died in June of 1871. She gave no date. She said that he was home at the end of the War in bed suffering from wounds received in Atlanta. They owned 60 acres of land in Cassville which she still owned in 1910 and was renting it out. I would imagine that he may have died of complications of his wounds. He was listed in the tax records in 1871, but he was in default in '72 His grave is probably not marked as I imagine that they were destitute if he was not able to work after he got home. The 1871 record listed 4 children under the age of 18 living at home. I imagine the 1870 census would provide more info on the kids. I also found "Vinie's" obituary in the Sept. 29, 1916 BARTOW TRIBUNE. Mrs. Vinie Freeman, an old and greatly respected woman of Bartow County and related to many prominent citizens of this section of Georgia, died Monday night at 2 o'clock at her home in Euharlee. Mrs. Freeman was the widow of James Freeman, once a highly respected citizen of the county, and was a sister of Cartersville's esteemed fellow-townsman, R. L . Griffin. She was 80 years of age and a consistent and loyal member of the Methodist Church. She is survived by five children, Mrs. Dunn, Mrs. Bright, Miss Fannie Freeman, and Jeff and Robert Freeman. Funeral services were held at Euharlee, Tuesday afternoon, attended by a host of friends, neighbors, and relatives. 1. [GABARTOW] Henderson County NC Estate Records 1838 - 1900
2. I am posting the following for the author of a new genealogy book. These are records that have not been available before now. Henderson Co.,NC was formed in 1838, and in 1861 Transylvania Co., NC was created out of Henderson Co., NC. So abstract for Henderson Co., NC from 1838 to 1900, and Transylvania Co., NC from 1838 to 1861 when Transylvania Co., was still part of Henderson Co., NC If you will email her names you are looking for she will tell you if the book will be beneficial to you. ------------snip------------- These valuable records have been in Raleigh NC since 1960 and never available in any printed form before now. Estate records, or probate records, were generated when a person died without a will. The court settled the deceased estate and in doing so generated a tremendous amount of documentation. These documents usually listed the widow/widower, heirs (children, grandchildren, brothers and sisters), sometimes where the heirs lived, names of slaves who were sold to settle the estate, dower issues, inventories and accounts. In fact, estate records give much more information than a will. I have published an abstract of these records. There are over 750 su r names listed and over 5000 names. The amount of information is truly phenomenal! Click on the URL below to review the book and for ordering. If you will email the name you are looking for I will tell you if the book will be beneficial to you. http://ksummers55.home.mchsi.com/ Kathleen Summers Her email address is --- <ksummers55@mchsi.com>

2. I notice quite a few Lumpkins in this listing of the Macedonia Silver Greys. Was that a common name or a prominent family in Bartow County? Are there any Lumpkins that belong to this list. The reason I ask is that my gg uncle has the middle name of Lumpkin (Robert Lumpkin Parsons) and noone seems to know how his parents gave him this middle name. He was born in Cartersville around 1898; Just wondering. Anyone have any ideas? Regards Rose

1. [GABARTOW] Macedonia Silver Greys
2. Gary Hawley
3. Below is what I have on the Macedonia Silver Greys, I did a brief check and some of these men went on to serve in other units. Men in the 851st G. M. district organized themselves into a home guard company called the "Macedonia Silver Greys", at the Macedonia Baptist Church on May 18, 1861, with Thomas J Pyles elected Captain, John A Beck, 1st Lieutenant, R. B. Couch 2nd Lieutenant, and John Brooks, 3rd Lieutenant. Captain Pyle wrote the folling letter on the same date as above to Adjutant General Wayne. Euharlee, Cass County Ga. "Dear Sir: The citizens of the vicinity of Macedonia church having organized themselves into a company for home defense(being men mostly not subject to duty) and wishing arms of some sort (through me, their commander) most respectively solicit you to send them swords and pistols for mounted men if you can. If not expedient to do so, send guns of some sort for about 30 men. He later wrote. "If you cannot furnish us with swords and pistols, we are desirous to be supplied with some sort of arms for which (of course) we expect and are willing to give bond for the forthcoming... I will inform you that we all have accepted our commissions and have taken and subscribed to the oath as required. Very respectfully your obedient servant, Thos. J. Pyle captain of the Macedonia Silver Greys" Everything that is within the quote marks above is a verbatim quote of the article. It was taken from a book which isn't named, there is a mention of Kingston, GA and a Mrs A E Johnson and that she was responsible for the war history of Kingston being preserved.
