    1. KEASLER/KESLER Reunion
    2. ccmiller
    3. It is getting time to put your priorities in order and see where they lie, there are 33 days left til the Kesler reunion in Franklin County GA. Begins at 10:30 AM 1 August 99 at the Prospect Methodist Church about 10 miles south of Toccoa, Ga in the juncture of the tri county area of Banks, Franklin and Stephens counties. There will be Church services with Preaching likely from Rev. Dennis Kesler and Gospel music by he and his family if the agenda of past reunions sticks and it likely will. Attendees will experience some of the best gospel music around this part of the country anywhere. Bring a spread of food to share with others in the activities building aka dining area. Bring your family information to share if you would like to do that. I will again be trying to collect such information from attendees that will provide the meat and potatoes of a book that has compiled the family histories of ALL THE MEMBERS OF THE ORIGINAL BOARD OF TRUSTEES OF PROSPECT METHODIST CHURCH and their related families and also includes the other families living in the Prospect Community during the mid 1800's to present. I am not writing this book to publish it myself, when finished it will be donated to the Church so that they may publish it or not as they choose and if the book is not finished and ready by the next reunion of year 2000 I will back out of it and quit trying because I am getting no help from the families themselves. People are not sharing their family information. For example: one local family has the old Kesler [german] Bible, the old James MILLER Bible, several old portraits and photos, old store records, but will not allow anyone to even see it much less come share it with the folks at the reunion. With attitudes like this it is a wonder if we will ever find all the answers to our family histories. Fortunately, I have the information contained in both those Bibles provided to me as much as 26 years ago so although I cannot see the Bible I know what is in it. I hope people will open up and become generous with information that is needed and desired by many other people. it is only thru sharing that we will ever have adequate documentation of our families' histories. I have in depth [but not complete] family histories of all the original members of the board of trustees and of several other families as follows: CRUMP, AYERS, KEASLER/KESLER, MARTIN, WHITFIELD, PAYNE, POOLE, PURCELL, LEDBETTER, MABRY, WILLIAMS, MILLER. There are other families represented in lesser degrees of completeness. Information needed is YOUR FAMILY GROUP SHEET i.e. your parents names, birth dates, death dates, locations, marriages, children and of course if you know them include your grandparents and as far back as you can go and include your children and their family group sheets as well. The most welcome items you can send me are PHOTOS, STORIES [family legends and tales of all kinds], DIARIES, JOURNALS, OLD LETTERS, etc. I can scan a photo into the computer and send it back to you the same day or day after just as quick as the US mail can run it back to you. The other items will take a little longer to type or copy and get back to you but I will not damage the items I am a careful and caring person about such family valuables that I consider priceless heirlooms. As of today I have over 325 pages of material already in the word processor, I only have about 20 photographs, that is not nearly enough photos to support an undertaking of this magnitude so please support this effort to document the history of the members of the Prospect Community of franklin Co GA. If you don't know whether your family fits or not PLEASE ASK ME AND I WILL TELL YOU WHERE YOUR FAMILY IS LOCATED RELATIVE TO THE OVERALL GROUP. I can run a quick check and get back to you but please share information with us all. It is my opinion that the documents and family information that was left to us by our ancestors is not really our own property but should be shared at least to be read and seen by the rest of our expanded family. You share with me and I will share with you and give you credit for providing the information to the group. Repeat: there is nothing in this for me personally except the following. God's word to us is a commandment Honor thy Father and thy Mother and how can you do that if you don't lift your forefathers and mothers names up and say to the world Hey, these are my Ancestors. Let's honor our Mothers and Fathers this next Kesler reunion at Prospect. Anyone needing directions may contact me and I will give you a step by step set of instructions. Thanks for taking the time to read all this, Charles Miller. C. C. 3. Hello: Can anyone help me identify the parents of John Union Dodd buried at the Old Terrell Family Cemetery in Banks Co. He married Manerva Terrell daughter of James A. Terrell who is buried there also. I need some information on him to help me identify if he was a Confederate soldier and am searching for him in a census record but the only John Dodd I find in 1860 Banks co. is a John M. Dodd in the household of Jeremiah Dodd. He is 12 years of age. Can anyone tell me if this is the same John Dodd. I also find a John W. Dodd in a marriage record in 1872. He is not to be found either in the 1880 Banks Co. Census. Can anyone help me with these men or tell me if they are ONE and the same with the initial just being misinterpreted. John Union Dodd in the marriage records of Banks Co. is recorded as John "U." Dodd. His wife is listed living alone in the 1880 Banks co. census so I assume he has died. She was born about 1855, (Manerva Terrell Dodd). Any help will be appreciated to try and distinguish if these are three different Men. Thank You, Karen T. Ledford/Toccoa, Ga. 3. In the 1920 Census (January 5), I have, head of household Edgar M. CHANDLER, with wife Cora, his mother Jane, and children Lorena, Joe B., and Cecil. The place is Marysville Towm, Anderson District, Banks County, Georgia. Lorena is shown as a High School Teacher. Edgar M. CHANDLER is shown as a Grocery Store Salesman. I'd like to find out anything I can on this family, before or after 1920, for quite personal reasons. Also, anything on the place, or the high school, which may help in putting a family puzzle together. Thanks for any help at all, Carl Smarling

    1. Jackson County, Georgia Cemeteries
    2. Belinda & Dave Savadge
    3. Hi, I have had a lot of questions and responses about the Jackson County, GA. Cemeteries. One of the main questions is how will this one be different. Here are my plans: 1. Mine will be an updated one (a lot of people have died in the last 20 years). 2. Mine will have pictures of the churches (if no church is there it will a picture of what the cemetery looks like. 3. I will include the church histories, along with founding members. 4. There are some cemeteries that are not in the old book, I am still looking for others. 5. I maybe include pictures of old or unusual stones. 6. I will include all unmarked graves. Any that are unmarked that I can find out who is buried there will be included. 7. Mine will include directions to the cemeteries and maybe maps. The maps in the old book are very hard to follow (I have heard this from others). I do not own this book and have only seen it once several years ago. I am still not sure how I am going to publish it yet. I may have to do it in sections if it gets too big. I am still working on this project, so it will take a while since I am doing this all myself. Thank you to everyone that has sent positive responses and encouragement. I really do appreciate it. Hope this answers your questions. Best Regards, Belinda savadge@alltel.net

    1. Jackson County, Georgia Cemeteries
    2. Belinda & Dave Savadge
    3. Hi, I am in the process of transcribing the Jackson County, Georgia Cemeteries for a book I plan on publishing. At the moment I am working on Prospect United Methodist Church, it is located at the Jackson County and Clarke County lines. I am also getting the church histories. Prospect dates back to the 1780's. It is a very neat cemetery. It has some very old and somewhat unique markers, a crypt or tomb, iron fences. I have not finished this cemetery yet. I am also told there in a slave cemetery located in the woods behind the church. I am trying to identify the unmarked graves in this cemetery. There are quite a few. Some are marked with plies of rocks, some with a field stone, a wooded cross, or whatever someone could find. If anyone has any ancestors buried in this cemetery in an unmarked grave could you please contact me. I would really like to identify as many unmarked graves in Jackson County as I can. I have found several people who have family buried here in unmarked and they were able to show where in the cemetery their families are buried and what their name were. I would really appreciate information on these unmarked graves. Thank you. Best Regards, Belinda savadge@alltel.net

    1. MCPHERSON Obit
    2. Belinda & Dave Savadge
    3. Hi Listers, This obit. is the one for my own Uncle that I just now found in Monday's newspaper. The sad part is, is that none of my sisters nor I was informed of this death. One of my sisters only lived about 7 miles from him and I lived about 11 miles from him. His funeral was held Monday and I did not see his obit. until early this morning. It is very sad that we did not get to attend his funeral. Our own father (this is his brother that died) did not even inform us of his death. My father only lives about 10 miles from me. My father did attend the funeral. So here is his obit. that was in the paper and at the end of the obit. I will add what information I have. Quill MCPHERSON, 68 Of Hoschton died Saturday, Graveside service, 4 p.m. today, Warsaw Cemetery, Duluth; Flanigan Funeral Home. Here is the added information for anyone researching this family: Quill McPHERSON born June 21, 1931 (not sure where in GA.) Married Jo-Ann CHAPMAN ? Children: Wayne Charlotte Janice Sherry - twin to Terry Terry - (male) twin to Sherry Dean Tracy Jo-Ann died about 10 years ago. All the children live in GA. I don't know who any of the girls married. Uncle Quill was a twin also. He had a twin brother Will that died as an infant and is buried in Warsaw Cemetery. Quill's parents were William Aze McPHERSON, Sr. and Daisy May CLARK. Daisy died sometime around 1935 and is buried in Warsaw Cemetery. William Aze died sometime around 1960 in Sand Mountain, AL. He is buried there. After Daisy died, William Aze loaded up his children (the 4 boys) and deposited them at different family members homes. He then left town. He later went to Sand Mountain, AL. William Aze McPHERSON was born 1888 in GA. He was first married to Minnie Ellen TOLBERT. William and Minnie had 4 girls: Azzie married a HARRISON Mertle married James CAMPBELL Clara May married a BATES Edna born 1915 married Marvin ROZAR William Aze and Minnie divorced (actually I think he deserted the family). William and Daisy May CLARK had 5 sons: James William born 1927 in Forsyth County, GA Clyde Edward born January 5, 1929 in Forsyth County, GA died 1996 in Tucson, AZ Quill born June 21, 1931 died April 10, 1999 Will born June 21, 1931 died 1931 William Aze "Bill" born 1934 James William married 1st. Eleanor DUNN, 2nd. Betty Jean LEWIS (in Metter, GA) 3rd. Barbara Ann BAILEY (in Atlanta, GA), 4th. Dorothy ? (this is my father - my step father actually - he adopted me when I was 6 and had my name legally changed) Clyde Edward "Eddie " married Emily CHAPMAN (sister to Jo-Ann CHAPMAN). Quill married Jo-Ann CHAPMAN (sister to Emily) William Aze "Bill" married 1st. Dorothy ?, 2nd. Elizabeth "Liz" ? I hope this information help someone who is researching this family. Well I am on my way to Duluth to visit Uncle Quill and at least pay my respects and leave him some flowers. Best Regards, Belinda savadge@alltel.net

    1. CAMPBELL Obit and Story
    2. Belinda & Dave Savadge
    3. Bob and Jane CAMPBELL Genealogy Surfer and Scout Leader When Bob and Jane Campbell's Dekalb County residence burst into flames Thursday morning, the blaze took both residents' lives and destroyed the house, except for Mr. Campbell's office. That room, which housed the family Bible and the genealogical history that had been Mr. Campbell's passion, was untouched, said the couple's daughter, Eloise Ragsdale of Decatur. "He had everything in there, all our reports cards from grade school, everything, " she said. This is just one of those strange things, as strange as it taking both of them together." The joint funeral for Robert C. Campbell Sr., 74, and Jane H. Campbell, 72, both of Atlanta, is 2 p.m. today (Monday, April 12, 1999) at H.M> Patterson & Sons, Spring Hill. Despite the assistance of neighbors, Mr. Campbell, a retired embalmer and funeral director with H.M> Patterson Y Son, died on the lawn of this residence, collapsing while trying to get help for his wife. Mrs. Campbell, a mental health nurse retired from DeKalb Medical Center, suffered from a degenerative bone disorder that made movement difficult, said her daughter. She died in her bedroom. Chattanooga natives, the Campbells met while attending neighboring single-sex high schools. they married in 1846 and moved to Atlanta when Mrs. Campbell was accepted at the Emory University School of Nursing. Mrs. Campbell served as camp director of a Girl Scout camp at what is now Fernbank Science Center and at Camp Timber Ridge in Mableton, said her daughter. In 1965, she was awarded the Thanks Medal for her service to the Girl Scouts. Mr. Campbell retired in 1988 and spent his time caring for his wife and researching genealogy on the Web. He was working on a family history and had traced his ancestors back to Paris in 1753. "He kept up with a small circle of friends, but looking after Mom sort of limited his social outings," said Mrs. Ragsdale. "So he bought himself a computer and practically lived on it. It'll take us the next five years to go through his history." The couple had both served as presidents of the Oak Grove and Heritage schools PTAs and were communicants at St. Bartholomew's Episcopal Church. Survivors other than their daughter include another daughter, Becky Beagle of Avondale Estates; a son, Bert Campbell of Cumming; and three grandchildren. Mr. Campbell is survived by a sister, Martha Spencer of Emporia, Kansas. In lieu of flowers, the family requested that contributions be made to Nicholas House at St. Bartholomew's, 1790 LaVista Road N.E., Atlanta, GA. 30329. 1. Cobb's Legion
    2. Perhaps one of the largest undocumented groups of Georgia Civil War Soldiers was Cobb's Legion. This group of combined Cavalry, Infantry, and Artillery Companies was formed from Northeast Georgia Counties - primarily around Athens and included many of the professors at UGA and professional men from the Athen area. It is unfortunate that no regimental history has been written, and to my knowledge, no rosters of this group have been previously published. The infantry companies alone numbered some 2,200 men and I have gotten ahold of the rosters and am transcribing them. The Officers and Company A are now on line (about 300 names). Others will be added over the coming days. The new names are linked from my updates page of the Civil War in Georgia site at http://www.researchonline.net/gacw/updates.htm or you can reach it from the main Civil War in Georgia URL http://www.researchonline.net/gacw Some interesting things I've found about this unit so far. They were in the center of the confederate line at Fredericksburg, positioned behind the stone wall. They received numerous citations and awards throughout the war. Two of the members of company A are identified in the rosters as "colored." Gen. Cobb was killed at Fredericksburg, and the cavalry subsequently became the 9th Cavalry Regiment, but they always retained the Cobb's Cavalry designation in honor of their fallen leader. A biography of the Cavalry commander, Pierce M. B. Young was published by Univ. of Georgia Press in 1964, but this is the ONLY extant book on Cobb's legion that I have found and it it now out of print. Cobb's Legion is the only unit I have found so far that had their own veterinary surgeon. If any of these names are yours, please drop me a note. I would like to start compiling service records and biographies on these men.
