I'm not sure this will help, but I have a dictionary of old terms written for genealogist. It defines "relief" as "a fine paid to a feudal lord for a tenant's entering upon the estate which was lapsed by the death of the tenant's ancestor." Now, I'm not sure I understand that at all but some legal terms are based on very old meanings.
