    3. The Appomattox Society Dedicated to the 28,231 soldiers of the Confederate States of America who were there at Appomattox Courthouse with Robert E. Lee. These men found it within themselves to stay and fight for "Marse Robert" when the Confederacy was failing, their friends were deserting and their families were imploring them to comeback home. Unto this end, The Appomattox Society was formed to honor these men and their descendants. Ever faithful, they received the now famous General Order No. 9 From General Lee, stacked their arms, picked up their few meager belongings and headed to what days before had been a separate country, now again a state in the United States of America. The Appomattox Society consists of lineal and collateral descendants of the men who stayed and received their paroles at Appomattox Courthouse, Virginia, April 10 - 15, 1865. Persons of any age or gender, who can show lineage back to one of these soldiers, are eligible to join the society. The hope is to collect biographical information on every man that surrendered at Appomattox and put it into a database where it can be researched by anyone wanting to find out more information on the men that were there. After numerous requests from persons whose ancestors were paroled after Appomattox, we have agreed that any person who can show lineage to a confederate ancestor that was paroled after Appomattox shall be eligible for full membership in the Appomattox Society. We will, in turn, profile these men in our newsletter also. This includes the soldiers who surrendered with Gen'l Joe Johnston near Greensboro, N.C., soldiers who surrendered with with Gen'l E.K. Smith at New Orleans, soldiers who surrendered with Gen'l Stand Waite in Texas, and other soldiers who can show parole on or after 9 April, 1865. The society is also open to all descendants of men who were captured and held until after the surrender. http://www.appomattoxsociety.org/
