This "unknown" man may not have been a soldier (but there is the slight chance that he was, as a few black soldiers were noted as fighting with and for the Confederacy); he may have been a servant to a soldier, especially an officer. They were usually treated by the Confederate surgeons just as tho they were soldiers. Perhaps the records of the Lynchburg hospital would have some information on him, if they can be found.
