When a person died, they did not embalm, so they were buried in a short time, perhaps the same or next day...They would bury them and have someone speak a prayer of some sort then cover them up...When the preacher, who was not always available due to distance, came by, they would have what we call a Memorial service...this was more frequent than you might eimagine in our 'modern' times...It was sometimes referred to as Funeral...sort of like when a person is lost at sea, or in some tragic occurrence like the WTC, wherein they cannot locate the body, but have a memorial service... This is not a custom limited to GA...Most Civil War Battlefield deaths were conducted that way...At Shiloh, they dug 'burial trenches' and covered them up in a 'mass grave.' >From: PATG31@aol.com >Reply-To: GA-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com >To: GA-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [GA-Roots] Questions on Georgia customs >Date: Wed, 17 Mar 2004 14:41:52 EST > >A cousin recently mailed me a copy of a page from a family Bible.
