To Certifie Platts James Cowan 100 acres In Granville County ---------------- Monday, October 24, 1768, No. 1725 Saturday last arrived here the ship FRIENDSHIP, CAPT. COWAN from from *Burrowslonness; who on the 21st past at Lat. 40 deg 31' Long. 32deg 44' took up a long boat belonging to the ship PROVIDENCE, of and from Colerain, bound for New York, with the following people in her, viz. Thomas Clarke, master; John Boyd and Samuel Harvey, mates; Melcher Kerson boatswain; Alexander Holdritch, seaman; and Mr. Jonathan Clarke Lewis and wife; Mrs. Campbell and two children of Colerain [Ireland]; Mrs. Campbell of Antrim; Mr. Daniel Todd and Mr John Wilson, passengers, who have given us the following accoount. The ship PROVIDENCE sailed from Colerain the 27th of August and on the 8th of September in Lat. 45 deg 60', Long. 31 deg sprung a leak which gained so fast upon her, that with both pumps and bailing they could scarce keep her above water, so that on the 10th they were obliged to take to their boats, the above 15 to the long boat, and 3 or 4 to the yawl, being all they could hold, and other passengers and seamen chose to stay in the ship rather than risk perishing sooner in the boats; the two boats soon parted and the long boat, after having quitted the ship 6 days happily fell in with Captain Cowan, who has safely landed here all the people that were in her.
