What is the easiest and quickest way to obtain copies of civil war records? Two of my great great grandfathers enlisted in Atlanta, Ga. One died in Va. Wiley Hood is buried at Hollywood Cemetery in Richmond, VA. Recently I contacted the cemetery to obtain a photo of the grave. Unfortunately, my ancestor's, like most of the confederate graves, does not have a marker. I also learned that for a fee the Government will now place a marker on the grave. However, to do so, I need a copy of Wiley Hood's war records. Any assistance or information you can provide, will be greatly appreciated. Kathy Hood-Houck
I don't know where you live so it is hard to tell you what is closest to you, but I live in GA and I try to keep a running list of things that I need and then when I get to go to Macon, GA, I go to the Washington Memorial Library, which has a very large genealogy department there and they are most helpful!!! They have the Military records and pension records there. This is easiest and quickest for me. Also why is the government going to charge you to put a marker up for him??? The Marker is free through the veterans affairs department or something like that, so unless they are charging you to have somone go out and put it on the grave, I do not see where the fee comes in. You can order these markers yourself and put them on the graves yourself if you are close enough. I ordered one for my husband's ggrandfather and placed it at the grave and then we had some reenactor friends of ours to have a Confederate Memorial service for him. It was awesome. Hope that this helps.
