    3. New Echota is the place near Calhoun, GA where the Cherokee Indians lived from about 1825 to 1838/39 when they were removed westward on the "Trail of Tears". One web site I found was located at http://ngeorgia.com/parks/new.html Another at http://www.northga.net/gordon/echota.html New Echota was also the place where a treaty was signed, but soon broken. See http://www.cviog.uga.edu/Projects/gainfo/chertrea.htm/newechot.htm Echota was the name of the Alabama Tribe of Cherokees, I think. check out the web site at http://echota-cherokee.hypermart.net/ Hope this helps some. 3. I don't know as much about the Cherokee War 1838 -- so need some help on identifying this location. Is "New Echota" different from "Echota" in Gordon County. (Pass this along to any surname or county lists that might be able to help. Some of these men eventually probably settled in Alabama and also Florida) Linda has typed this, but we're trying to figure out more about where this company was raised from...and about the individuals involved. If we could place all the officers in a county vicinity that would help. I really appreciate those of you who have shared something about your ancestor in these wars of this time period. We're gradually getting more and more on-line thanks to all of you! Also if any of you are able to get copies of rosters while you're at the Georgia Archives, that would help us so much. Both Linda and I live out of state, so have to depend on others to get the data copied for us. 3. Ray, I would try the following funeral home websites to locate an existing one in the place you are interested in. I have had good luck with friendly funeral home directors who were interested in the local history of funeral homes and had suggestions for where to find old records: http://www.funeralnet.com/ or http://www.funeral-dir.com/ and click on "on-line directory". Hope this helps. 1. [GA-Roots] The Hodges - Batten Family/GA
    2. Joe & Steph
    3. Hi... I am researching the Hodges - Batten family and I am seeking some help..... This is what I know.... Daniel R. Hodges (Aug 1861, GA - Jun 1907) had a relationship with Nancy Batten (Oct 1855, GA - Aug 1916, GA) and they had a son named Matthew Daniel Batten Hodges (Mar 1881, Charlton Co, GA - died Sept 1924). I do know that Nancy married a Charles Peterson and that the Batten family basically raised Matthew and he went by the last name of Batten and not Hodges.... He married Catherine Lucretia Bennett and they had 8 children.....Edith, Winnie, Donald, Clyde, Kermit, Catherine Nancy, Arthur, and one that I have no name for....I am seeking any information on them and whatever else there is. Any help is appreciated.....thank you... Stephanie Grohol

    1. RE: [GA-Roots] Records for closed Mortuary & Funeral Homes
    2. Doris Robbins
    3. Ray, In Polk County, GA most of the records for Funeral Homes that went out of Business were retained by the former owner. The Roberts Funeral Home that was in Cedartown during the depression era, closed and the records were stored in the basement. When the basement was flooded, the records were thrown in a dumpster. What a loss. :o(((( Mr. Olin Gammage of Gammage Funeral Home, has some of the records from Bisaner's Funeral Home and Lee Border's Funeral Home. The Polk County Cemetery Preservation Committee was given permission to transcribe the records and they have a book coming out soon. Information can be found on their web site at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html Look under Publications. Freeman Harris Funeral Home in Rockmart was established in the 1920s and is still in operation. Don't know how far back their records go, but will try to find out. Don't know a lot about the hospitals, but a few in the area where privately owned and when they closed, I would think the records went with the doctors. After the doctor's death, who knows. Way too much of our heritage has been lost. > [Original Message] > From: <BustaKnowledge@aol.com> > To: <GA-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> > Date: 2/25/04 3:42:24 PM > Subject: [GA-Roots] Records for closed Mortuary & Funeral Homes > > Sir, > > Where are the records of mortuaries, funeral homes and hospitals that > have closed or went out of business stored and how would we get access to them > for genealogy research? > > I look forward to hearing from anyone who knows. > > Ray > > > ==== GA-ROOTS Mailing List ==== > Faye Dyess fdy@comcast.net Listmanager > Thou shalt check thy spelling and thy grammer. > Searchable Archives at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl
