    1. Van Wert Cemetery Celebration - Polk County, GA
    2. Doris Robbins
    3. The Van Wert Cemetery Celebration will be on Saturday, October 23, 2004 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the old Van Wert Cemetery, Van Wert, GA. For more information contact the Polk County Cemetery Preservation Committee at pccpc@earthlink.net or 770-646-0013. Van Wert was the county seat of Paulding County before Polk County was formed in 1851. Then Van Wert became part of Polk County. The oldest "readable" marked grave has a death date of 1821. Come and see what all has been done to preserve this historic cemetery. Polk County Cemetery Preservation web site is at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/CemPres.html For photos of the Van Wert Cemetery - click on Cemeteries and then Van Wert. The volunteers have worked hard on cleaning up the cemetery this past year, but still have much to do. Tombstone need to be re-set, some need to be repaired and some retainer walls and fencing need to be repaired. Anyone like would like to help may contact the P.C.C.P.C. at pccpc@earthlink.net or write: PCCPC P O Box 57 Felton, GA 30140 Doris Robbins

    2. Hi, The 1832 was the last GA land lottery. As late as 1848-9 The state of GA was still trying to dispose of all land lottery parcels of land. Much of the land from all of the lotteries was being sold in the late 1840s. The GA state archives is a great place to find out about these lands. Mary

    1. More 1836 Rosters - Creek War
    2. Virginia Crilley
    3. We're so delighted that we have a few more 1836 Creek War Rosters on-line! Upson and Marion Counties-- specifically are new ones. http://www.rootsweb.com/~usgenweb/ga/military/indian.htm There is a search engine on that page, so you can search just Creek War rosters.... but remember that spelling was not always accurate, so you may need to try various ways. I was at the library yesterday consulting Virgil White's Index to Indian Wars....and found so many variations listed in his book from the names on the rosters we're using. I feel sure that he used a "common" spelling of most of these. Blalock - Blaylock that sort of thing. We're trying to locate burials for all of these men -- so many left GA. Hopefully some descendants will send to the National Archives for the military record. Ask for military record/bounty land/pension The bounty land was NOT in Georgia, and most recipients probably did not actually move to the states of Missouri, Illinois, Arkansas, but instead sold their warrants. I'm sure there were professional firms who just dealt with processing these warrants for those unable to do it for themselves. Federal Law September 28, 1850 included a provision of land for those who had served in various Indian conflicts. There are 9 volumes in the Georgia State Archives about these Military years.... WPA project. So if you don't find your name, and are going to the Archives, I understand the book is well indexed. And we'd love to have you type up some pages and put them on-line. We've barely touched the surface on what is there! Virginia

The info came from a cousin who cant remember the name of the book & quite frankly Im not sure he even saw the grant. Thanks for your help, Derrell
