    1. [GA-Roots] 1860 Coweta Co. Census
    2. Betty E. More
    3. Jane or Lynda or anyone out there - Does anyone have the 1860 census for Coweta Co., GA? I just found in Ancestry an Allen Williams in Coweta Co., GA in Newman P. O. Township. Could someone please, if it is available, do a lookup and see who was living with him or who he was living with? Thank you in advance. An added note. I agree that Rootsweb is by far the best information center and I use it and support it all the time through the yearly donations and by submitting documents and photos I have for others to enjoy - some of which have never been put online. However, in Sumner Co., KS and in New Mexico and Arizona, there is quite a bit online about the Swaggart family. For those who are wondering about Ancestry and the others, they come in handy also - like now. I live in the Republic of Panama and I use every resource that I can find because there are no libraries available down here but, if I lived where I could get to a library on a regular basis, I very likely would not subscribe. I get there only once/year and always reserve a few days in the library for my research. The paid resources save me a lot of time because I have all my questions ready and don't waste time looking. 1. [GA-Roots] Message concerning Ga. Land Lotteries
    2. Dee Thompson
    3. Hi Jeanie, I'm using your message to give a bit of elaboration on the Georgia Land Lotteries. There were a total of six lotteries, with irregularities and inaccuracies in the recording of data in each. The book that I have is considered the only truly authentic list of grants to Revolutionary War Soldiers. ONLY THE THIRD (1820), FIFTH (1827) AND SIXTH (1832) LOTTERIES RECOGNIZED THE VETERANS AND GAVE PREFERENTIAL CONSIDERATION TO THEM. Any VETERAN could have registered in any of the six lotteries but would have done so in the first, second and fourth lotteries as just a resident of the state. All six lotteries were open to anyone with established residency in eorgia, - the only requirement being the 1 year residency for the first lottery and 3 years residency for the other five lotteries. So if you ask me for a lookup from this book, remember that this only includes veterans. If you are simply looking for ANY land lottery grants your family might have won, I'll need to check for that information at the archives. REMEMBER that your veteran might have acquired land as a civilian in the first or second lottery. Also keep in mind that the third, fifth and sixth lotteries, while favoring veterans, were still open to everyone with residency. Now Jeanie, - no. COL. John Blanton was not listed in this book, but I'll be glad to check for him in the all the lotteries if you'd like. Please send me all possible names, and if you have any counties for them let me know. 2. Hi Judy in Newman, Thanks so much for sending me the O'Neal info. So far I don't recognize any of them, but then I have so little to go on. I will keep them and maybe they will connect someday. My great grandfather was Henderson O'Neal, who married Rebecca Horton first, had several children, then married Nancy Kilner and had my grandfather and his sister. My grandfather, Zack R. O'Neal married Emma P Bozeman from GA. They were married in Arkansas as Henderson O'Neal moved his family there. Emma P was visiting her uncle in AR when she met Zack. I have virtually nothing from Henderson on back. Thanks again. Emma in NM

    2. Dorothy Hunt, thank your for your input on the Ancestry.com. I have been hesitant about signing up, because like you said there is so much information on the rootsweb, and from lookups done by other researchers for us. I find that obituaries have been the biggest help to me, in finding names of siblings, and their married names. I will have to think about this long and hard before I decide to make my choice. You may have saved me some money. Pat, in Indiana

Pat in Indiana: have only tried ancestry.com but won't renew..maybe with a p.c. it's better, but i dislike results that are just another source,i want the goods, that's what i joined ancestry.com for..when they refer me to red book i get mad..rootsweb.com is maybe all we need..esp. if we chip in to buy books/census for look-ups as mama walton gets Walton Co.,Ga list to do.. I got g'pa HUNT's given name,DOB & DOD & g'ma OLIVER's entire family's graves from look-up done by Dot Cox from book,"In Rememberance" on Walton list..Better believe I sent money to buy stuff! They saved me from total ignorance abt my closest Hunt & Oliver unknowns!!!

    1. Re: [GA-Roots] Bethel
    2. Gerald Gieger
    3. Betty, Bethel is the English rendition of the Hebrew, Beth-El, meaning House of God...In bygone times, people gave meaningful names to their children, either from the Bible, the Classics, Royalty, famous military men, respected members of their family, etc., hoping the child would grow up, emulating that famous person...Nowadays it often is some cute sounding catch word...and the kid grows up to be a renegade. Bethel is not that uncommon. >From: Betty R Lovell <sue116@ragland.net> >Reply-To: sue116@ragland.net >To: GA-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com >Subject: [GA-Roots] Bethel >Date: Tue, 30 May 2000 23:38:37 +0000 > >Are there a church or place in and around Atlanta Georgia that is named >Bethel?
