    1. [GA-Roots] Re: ROOTS-L Digest V00 #393 - Cook Co., Cemetery
    2. Angus P. Robinson Jr
    3. Good Morning Allene, During this time period there was an cemetery adjacent to what is now the Chicago Historical Society at North Ave. and Clark Street. If my memory is correct many of those who died in and immediately after the Great Chicago Fire were buried there. In the late 1800's, as the city begin to expand northward, someone decided the cemetery had to be moved. Next of kin were asked to move their ancestors to another cemetery but not all the bodies were removed. For instance, just to the north of the Society is an old stone mausoleum. The COUCH name is over the front door of the stone structure. According to those in the society many other bodies are still buried there because there was no next of kin available to pay for the removal. All the headstones were removed except for the mausoleum. Somewhere in the back of my mind is the memory of bodies being removed another old cemetery on the northwest side of Chicago dating back to this period. It is where George M. Pullman, founder of the sleeping car dynasty, is buried under a layer of concrete and railroad ties. That is a story in itself. If you write the historical society they might be able to tell you the names of who were exhumed and buried elsewhere. Good Luck. Angus "Scotty" Robinson X-Message: #22 Date: Sun, 04 Jun 2000 16:45:06 -0500 From: Robert & Allene Hintz <rahintz@discover-net.net> Subject: [Fwd: COOK COUNTY, ILLINOIS CEMETARIES] My Great, Great, Great Grandfather died in Wisconsin in 1865 and his body was transported back to Chicago, by train to be buried. Presumably near his wife who had been living with their daughter and son in law Electra and Francis Sherman who owned the Sherman Hotel, years later called the Sherman House. Frances was also the Mayor of Chicago during the Civil War. Anyway would anyone have any idea what Cemetary in Chicago would be the most logical place to start looking for their graves? Are there any books that have the Cemeteries in Chicago indexed with who is buried in each cemetery? If anyone can help me I'd appreciate hearing from you. Thanks! 3. In reference to a posting about Wilkes Co old wills I think the following information might shed light on archives operations. For each year he was in office, the last governor asked each department to CUT their budget by 5%. Positions at the GA Archives were not filled when vacated. Microfilming of documents was outsourced so now they are at a virtual standstill. They are backlogged about 5 years in microfilming. When taxpayers want their taxes cut the services get cut. Lynda

Dudley (b. 1799 in Georgia, d. 1870 in AL), married Alice Webb (1 803 in Georgia, d. 1852 in AL) on 29 Apr 1824 in Troup County, GA. He was living in Georgia when he and his wife Ailsey decided to move into the AL territory to establish a home and put down roots for their children. They went to Tallapoosa County where they had relatives. While there, Joseph learned that the Indians had signed a treaty to give up the territory which was about 50 miles to the south. so with the help of his wife and 5 children he packed all their possessions onto a wagon and moved to the newly formed Russell county. In 1847 Joseph bought a 90 acre tract of land west of Brush Creek on the north half of Section 5 in Township 16 of Range 28 for $250.00. He and his sons cleared the land and built their first home in Russell county. Two acres of this land was sold five years later to the members of the Unrion Church so that the chruch would not have to move. 1840 Census: Meriwether County, GA p. 113 Dudley, Joseph M. 2 0 2 0 0 1 F. 1 1 1 0 0 1 1850 Census: Russell county, AL taken Jan. 17, 1851 by John W. 3. Would you please check this CD for me and see if you find a marriage for Robet Scott about 18333/34. I believe the bride to have been an Elizabeth Hunt. However, I am not sure. The mariage would have taken place in either SC or GA. You may hold the key to a brick wall. Thanks so much for your help.
