Also purchased a few back issues. Will let you know which ones and do limited look-ups as time allows. These magazines are very well done and soft bound. Well worth the $4.00 price. Judy in Newnan

    1. [GA-Roots] 1797/99 - 1802 TAX DIGEST FOR JACKSON COUNTY, GEORGIA, Vol. 1 - For Sale
    2. Belinda & Dave Savadge
    3. I have just transcribed and published the 1797/99 & 1802 Tax Digest for Jackson County, Georgia. This book is the transcriptions for the first Tax Digest book in the Jackson County, Georgia Probate Court Office. It has what could be found of the 1797, 1799 and all of the 1802 Tax Digest, 1800 & 1801 are missing and not in the Courthouse. This book contains approx. 949 surnames and over 1200 individuals. The Tax Digest list the Tax Payers Name, the Quality of Land, To Whom the Land was Granted, which County the Land was in, the Water Way, Whose Land it Joined, Number of Slaves they owned, Town Lots they owned, Stock in Trade, the Tax they paid or if they only paid a Poll Tax. In some cases it list the Agent, Administrator, or Guardian who was representing the tax payer. Tax Payers paid taxes in the county they resided in, so this books also list if they owned land in a different county and also includes the above information on it. The following counties were formed from part of Jackson County: Banks (1858), Barrow (1914), Clarke (1801), Gwinnett (1818), Hall (1818), Madison (1811), and Oglethorpe. 8 1/2" x 11", soft cover, perfect bound, 374 pages, fully indexed. 1. [GA-Roots] Carter/Johnson
    2. Sharon Broward Davis
    3. Hi everyone, While copying obits to continue the series Baxley News Banner for Volume 5, I came across this interesting information on the CARTER and JOHNSONS that I thought everyone researching them can use. I am connected to both families. Pioneers of the Tallassee Strip An old state map shows Carter's Cowpens as the only settlement in Tallassee Strip, and there is no other dot between Hartford, now Hawkinsville, and Brunswick. David Carter came from South Carolina, stopping a while in Tattnall, and located in Appling while the territory was still held by the Creeks. He built his cowpens near the present W. H. Padgett Farm, but his slaves murdered him and ran away because of their fear of the Indians. Soon after the Lottery of 1820 which divided South Georgia between the Altamahs and the Chatahoochee into the counties of Appling, Irwin and Early, other Carters came from South Carolina and four Johnson brothers who had landed at Baltimore from Scotland and worked their way leisurely South through the Carolinas also crossed the Altamaha and settled in Appling. The Carters and Johnsons multiplied and replenished the earth at a marvelous rate and their ramifications extend all over the Wirgrass country. As Appling was divided time after time the kinnery was all cut off in the new counties, but those who stayed in Appling were not less productive than their ancestors and the present county is full of them. Baxley News Banner October, 6th, 1921 Hope this is helpful to my fellow Johnson and Carter cousins. Sharon Broward Davis Pine Mtn. GA.

    1. [GA-Roots] Fowlers in Carroll Co
    2. Looking for descendants/relatives of JOSEPH (JOEL) FOWLER, b. abt 1861 in GA, who moved to Bowdon, Carroll Co., GA from Hightower, Cleburne Co., AL, and lived there with his second wife, ELLEN TWEDELL or TWEEDLE. Joel and Ellen are said to be buried in the Bowdon City Cemetery. Joel is the son of JOHN O. FOWLER (b. abt 1826, d. aft 1873) and SARAH ANN NORRIS FOWLER, of Gwinnett and Campbell counties in GA. Joel, is found in the 1870 Campbell County census, Fairburn District, age 9, living with his parents and older siblings GEORGE WILSON FOWLER, b. 1852 and MOLLIE (Mary Kate) FOWLER, b. 1854. His older siblings were married by 1870 and living in Campbell Co. also, Campbellton District. They are: NANCY ELIZABETH FOWLER, b. 1848, m. John Pierce Walker, and WILLIAM J. FOWLER, b. 1849, m. Lula (Lucy) Owen(s). By 1880, Joel is found in the Cleburne Co., AL census, age 18, with his mother, Sarah Ann, a widow. John Fowler apparently died sometime after 1873 (John appears on a Grand Jury list in Fairburn in 1873) and is said to be buried in Campbell Co (now South Fulton). Also in Cleburne in 1880 (they lived in Hightower,AL) were Nancy Elizabeth Fowler Walker and her family, William J. Fowler and his family, George Wilson Fowler and Mary Kate Fowler who married A.J. "Jack" White. Joel Fowler married (1) Eliza Ballenger sometime before 1882, and they had a daughter who died in infancy. She is buried in Ranburne. Eliza died in 1894 and Joel remarried (2) Ellen Twedell or Tweedle. All of the above are buried in the Ranburne First Baptist Church cemetery except John Fowler, his son Joel Fowler, and Joel's 2nd wife Ellen. I do not know whether Joel and Eliza had any more children. Joel's older brother, William J. Fowler, is my great-grandfather. Trying to find any information about Joel's family to add to my family tree. Any help appreciated. Thanks... Judy Fowler Kilgore JodieK444@aol.com Newnan, GA

    1. Re: [GA-Roots] Look up on Census 1820
    2. Charles, Thanks for the reply. I have very little on my Moore line. My great-grandmother was Sarah J. (Sallie Ann) Moore. She was born in FL (maybe in Leon or Gadsden Co.) in 1849; married 1st a Mr. Alderman and 2nd Albert Booth McElvy in 1875 in Gadsden Co, FL. They lived in Gadsden Co. until her death in 1905. Her parents were Charles (Charlie) Moore and Elizabeth J. King. Elizabeth was born in SC in 1824. I know nothing about Charles. They had a son names Charles E. Moore, born in the mid 1840s. This is all I have. Charles could have been from GA or SC. I just don't know. Elizabeth was without a husband in the 1860 Gadsden Co, FL census and she remarried in 1861. I don't know if he died or if they divorced or what happened to him. My McElvy and Moore families have close ties to gadsden Co, FL and Decatur Co, GA. Any thing sound familiar? FENDLEY, John or Jordon I am trying to find out anything about William's first marriage and on where he was from. He might have been in either Bulloch or Screven County at the time. Brothers of WIlliam MIGHT have been: Zachariah Coursey, Absolom Coursey and John Coursey. All would have been born prior to 1800 I would imagine. If anyone has just the tiniest bit of info I would sure appreciate it. My William is not the William A. Coursey who was sheriff of Screven Co.. I do feel that they are related. Thanks to all, Nancy

Hi Nancy, William Coursey Married Mary Monk in Bulloch County, GA 6-6-1820 Zachariah Coursey married Elizabeth Caswell in screven Co, GA 9-14-1809 Zachariah Coursey married Ann Hughston in Tattnall co, GA 10-13-1823 Richmond Co, GA John Bruton Coursey born 8-25-1824 his father was Absalom Coursey and his mother was Ann Elisabeth Black. Richmond, Screven, Bulloch and Tattnall counties all joined and were part of each other. I would take my search for William to Screven co and then to Richmond. Look for wills. I believe the William in Bulloch that married Mary Monk is your William and his first wife. Zachariah was possibly his brother. -----Original Message----- From: RNSANGLIN@aol.com <RNSANGLIN@aol.com> To: GA-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com <GA-ROOTS-L@rootsweb.com> Date: Friday, June 23, 2000 7:44 PM Subject: [GA-Roots] COLLINS, COURSEY, HOLLINGSWORTH, WILKES >Hi All, > >Back again with another bunch of names that I have just learned about! 3. At a lecture at the National Genealogical Conference in RI last month, a speaker talked about how he found English records in a library manuscript collection in Kansas. He went on to talk about the collection, but the really big point was to check out manuscript collections of your local libraries. The Lawrence University, Kansas collection has over 300,000 loss papers and around 10,000 of them on the Kaye family from England. In the Kaye papers were also mentioned the families of Dean, Norton, Copley, Armitage, Nettleton, Lockwood, Saltinstall, Appleyard, Berry, Cook, Hepworth, Wentworth, Heighe, Stowe, Bailey, Trappell and Hutchinson - among the few. Just a reminder that you never know where you can find documents. Lynda

    3. Judy, Thanks for the indexes. I have not had time to look at them, but I copied them. Unfortunately, I must have missed part 2. I have part 1 and part 3. Could you please send me part 2. I am sorry that I messed up and have to ask you to do this extra work for me. My mother was born in Newnam, GA and her mother is buried there. I have visited Coweta Co and done a little research, but I would love to have all of the Indexes to the Coweta Co. Gen. Soc Newsletter. 1. [GA-Roots] TANNER and JOHNSON families
    2. Patsy and Don Davis
    3. Looking for information on Silas TANNER b 1844 in Cherokee Co., AL. Son of John TANNER and Rona. In 1860 Silas married Sarah Adeline JOHNSON in Polk Co., GA. There children were Frank N., b 1861, John Thomas b 1862, Fannie b 1867, Ben b 1870, William b 1872 and Samuel b 1875. Silas is reported to have died October 04, 1875. I do not know where. In 1864, Silas joined the Union Army, 1st Alabama Cavalry, in Rome, GA but deserted after 2 months. We have not located him in 1870. In 1896, Sarah Adeline filed for a Union widow's pension in Parker Co, TX which was denied due to Silas' status as a deserter. Signing the application for pension and verifying as to who Sarah was were Charley and Fannie Lester who may be the daughter and son-in-law of Sarah. Sarah next shows up in Calhoun Co, AL on the 1900 census. Sarah may have been the daughter of Robert Andrew Johnson of Etowah Co., AL. Silas had many family connections to GA. Is anyone researching this family? Does anyone know where Silas died? 1. [GA-Roots] William Edmondson of Greene County Ga
    2. beaoq
    3. My great grandfather Caleb T Greer was born in Rome or Greene County Georgia on 4 November 1833, to Nancy Hester Sappington and Jesse Mercer Greer. He married sisters Martha J Edmondson in Greene County, Ga on 5 November 1856 and Amanda Edmondson in Morgan County, Ga. on 18 Dec 1864. He and Martha J had four children: Amanda, Jesse, Mary and John. Martha J died when the children were young; they are found on the 1870 Walton County, Ga Census with Amanda, age 30 and Caleb Greer, age 34. Jesse and John are males. In 1880, he and a brother John Henry Greer and their families including Amanda Greer and the children born to Amanda and Caleb migrated to Claiborne Parish La. Later a sister Mary Frances Young and her family excluding her husband, joined them in the Hurricane Community of Claiborne Parish, La. Caleb and Amanda raised a large family with the majority of them living and dying in the Hurricane Community. I am trying to identify the three children by Martha J., namely Mary, Jesse and John who did not come to North Louisiana with the father. Amanda married Joseph Miles in Georgia and was later found in Sibley, Webster Parish, La where she, her husand and some of her children are buried. I also would like to identify the father and mother of these two Edmondson sisters; believe he was named William Edmondson; I do not know the mother's name. Can anyone help me with any of this info. Can exchange alot of source documents and info. THanks Bea Grer O'Quin/New Orleans, La
