    3. Just to let everyone know I'm back and still searching for ancesters of my grgrandfather William Lafayette EVATT b. Ga. Mid 1800s..he married my grgrandmother Louisa Braddock Freeman in Nassau Co., Fl. 12/24/1879. Also looking for descendants of his brother George W. EVATT (Uncle Watt). b. Ga. 1866. Among Watt's children are: Allie EVATT, George EVATT,Mabel EVATT, Bert or Herbert EVATT, Leila EVATT,Max or Maxwell EVATT, Edwin EVATT and maybe Cuthbert and Annie Maud EVATT, and Will EVATT. William L. also had a sister named Ola Lee EVATT who married Joseph Janes in Nassau Co., Fl. 01/26/1882. I have hit the old "brickwall" and am desperately trying to find out what Their father's name was and their mother Mary's maiden name. Thanks to anyone who might be able to help me with this. Ginny

The ship PROVIDENCE sailed from Colerain the 27th of August and on the 8th of September in Lat. 45 deg 60', Long. 31 deg sprung a leak which gained so fast upon her, that with both pumps and bailing they could scarce keep her above water, so that on the 10th they were obliged to take to their boats, the above 15 to the long boat, and 3 or 4 to the yawl, being all they could hold, and other passengers and seamen chose to stay in the ship rather than risk perishing sooner in the boats; the two boats soon parted and the long boat, after having quitted the ship 6 days happily fell in with Captain Cowan, who has safely landed here all the people that were in her. I must have cut it off when = copying) useless in the roadless woods. the Virginians who came into = upper Georgia with slaves had wagons and carriages. for many years the = Virginians said that when they passed through Carolina the people who = had never seen a wagon or carriage hitched up their carts and hurried on = behind them to be on hand when the big wheels ran over the little ones. = They said that the curiosity was responsible for the settlement of south = Georgia. The Virginians turned off at Augusta to the oak and hickory = hill country, and then the Carolinas heard of Pineries like their own = down this way and headed for them. Uncle Luck said that there is no noise today to be compared with the = screeching of those solid wheels on the old carts. The whine of the = circular saw at the saw at the Sellers mill nearby sounds something like = it, but not quite as ear piercing. Many wolves were trapped and deer = and bear were killed, but more were scared out of the country by the = advancing settlers with their screeching axils. The daring panther = might attack a foot traveler or crop off a limb on a horseman but he = took to his heels when he saw a cart coming through the woods. Fifty-six Years On a Peg-Leg Enlisting in Company F, 47th., Georgia Regiment, Colonel Williams = commanding, Matthew Johnson had fought bravely and well until in the = battle of Chickamauga he lost a leg and was badly wounded in the other. = Like most veterans of the Civil war he is inclined to believe that the = boys were pretty well coddled up and babied in the last big war and = since. He has seen younsters who never smelled powder getting big = pensions for flat feet, and wonders a little how much they know about = real hardship. How would they have felt to come home maimed and = peniless to a little clearing many miles from a railroad in a county = where a cash dollar was a rarity. It is all in a life time he thinks, but that ripsnorting wolf roped two = ways and thirsty for the blood of his captors, and the panthers that = screamed at night around the little cabin that was his home, and the = deer and the turkey he killed with his first little old shot gun, these = are the things that he likes to remember nowadays when the blood is thin = and the limbs are feeble. 3. I think we should list the RS soldiers in our families as a rememberance. I will start with: John Anderson, , R.S., served 1776-1779, NC Line 2 & 5 regiments under Buncombe and Enloe, fought at Brandywine, Germantown, and Monmouth Lewis Sanders Noble, R.S. b. 1760 d. abt. 1855 fought at Brandywine Micajah Paulk, R.S., 1763-1847 John Sears, R.S., served 1777-78 with Capt. John Moore, NC Line I have just seen the "Patriot". In my opinion, it appears that Benjamin Martin was loosely based on a composite of Andrew Jackson and the The Swamp Fox--Marion Francis. D. 2. Claudia...the "Looking Back" is not a reference to a book. It is their version of putting in various things from Coweta's past. There is no reference to a Dorothy Brannan. I think there may be references to Kennedys...it would be in the indexes I posted (4 installments). Do you have them all? Only the last issue (Summer 1999) has an index by surnames. No Kennedys or Cannadys in any of the 1999 issues...sorry. Judy
