My husband's family was very prominent family in Georgia and Oklahoma also and we could not go directly to documentation on some of them. We had to go through a lot of speculation and hearsay before I found a particular documentation. It started out from a lady that said--I don't know this for a fact but so and so said..........Then on to that so&so and he sent me to another and 5 so&so down the line I finally found the documentation I wanted and needed. I guess what I am trying to say is never turn down speculation or hearsay cause it just may be the clue you need to find documentation and fact. Just because they were prominent in the community does not necessarily mean the records are readily available. Wanted: Official documentation / proof of relationship of Israel BIRD (father) and William BIRD (son). Not wanted: Speculation or hearsay - Have excellent resources for both. Considering the, documented, public offices held by Israel BIRD and William BIRD, some of which are noted below, and their standing in the communities of Bryan, Bulloch, Screven and Effingham Counties, GA, it seems unlikely, to me, that there would be no available proof of their relationship. Joyce, Thank you for that bit about John A. White and Atlanta. I will try to find that book. And my memory was correct...Cascade is on the west side of Atlanta...actually southwest. My husband grew up in that area. I was from East Point...a little more southwest than Cascade Heights. Judy in Newnan
Joan Would you please look for a Daniel CANNADY (any spelling-even Kennedy) in the Cherokee Co Cemetery book. He rec'd land in Cherokee Co in the 1827 land lottery. I believe he died around 1850-1852 but not sure. My brickwall is Alma Pearre Cannady but don't know of any reason she would be in that county. Thank you very much! Claudia
The inmates of Georgia's Central State Hospital asylum have been enumerated in the census records of Midway, Baldwin County starting with the 1850 census. The 1880 census has a special schedule of dependants, delinquents, and other confined persons - particularly convicts and asylum inmates - including the inmates at the asylum in Baldwin County. The National Archives microfilm of these records, including additional information for each person listed, is on microfilm at the Georgia Archives in drawer 192, boxes 61 and 62. Persons confined at home are also listed in this schedule, in their respective counties.
Is there any one on the mailing list that can tell me how to get in touch with the UDC? Their new volume has an ancestor of mine listed that to my knowledge was never in the Civil War. I would like to confirm their basis for including him in their newest volume. Jane

Pat & Judy: This is from Franklin Garrett's book - Atlanta and its Environs (1880's to 1930's) "On January 5, 1924 a 25 year old real estate salesman named John A. White took his seat in city council as councilman from the Fourth Ward succeeding C. L. Ashley. Thirty years later, a well known insurance man of 35, he remains in council, thereby setting a record for the longest consecutive period any man has ever been a member of that body. He has served under five different mayors and on virtually every council committee. The John A. White Park in Cascade Heights section was named in his honor. Since the end of WWII, Mr. White now councilman from the Fifth Ward, has been been particularly active in the city's street lighting and slum clearance programs." Most everybody did LOL. Mine did the same thing...moved to Alabama and then came back. I remember my mom telling me about swimming at John A. White Park when she was a kid. That would have been in the 1920s. And I definitely remember going there when I was a child. Lordy! I'm gettin' old!! Hope you find your John. Judy in Newnan
would you please look up william riley minton family from N. C . to GILMER county GA thank you martha
The Probate Court in the county where the person resided would have had to have received the order from the dr. and/or family member.
Pat, Did you know there was a John A. White Park in Atlanta? I remember it from when I was a child. Seems like it's on the west side of Atlanta. May not have anything to do with your John White, but I thought it was an odd coincidence. Judy In Newnan
Could anyone shed some light on this subject? If a person was committed to a mental inst. in 1906, what legal action would have been required, and where would the legal action have been taken-in the person's home county(Pickens Co GA), or in the county(Baldwin Co. GA) where institutionalized? The mental institution is no help in this matter.I have all records they have. Thanks, I appreciate your help.Debbie
Thanks Judy, I'll check it out but I doubt if it is the same John A. He moved to Carroll Co. after the war and then to AL.
