The Polk County, Georgia web site for the American History and Genealogy Project has been updated with some "New" Cemetery Surveys. We would like to get all the Cemeteries in Polk County online. If you have a Cemetery Survey that you have done and would like to share with others, please e-mail us about instruction on how to submit. We will accept partial surveys. We are still working on the Obits and hope to have them ready to upload by the end of the week. Computer problem now solved, things should get back to normal. Thanks to everyone that has submitted information for the web site. Doris Robbins Polk County Host for AHGP http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/

We all knew, loved and respected Joe for his genealogy research and willingness to help others. I, for one, am in shock. Joe will be sorely missed and mourned by many. A friend of mine found this in the Douglasville paper today and called me. --- Judy ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Joe Baggett, 55, of Douglasville, died April 27, 2002. He was born in 1946. He was a graduate of Douglas County High School and had been a writer and historian about Douglas County and Douglasville history. He was the publisher of Douglas County, Georgia Genealogy and a member of several genealogical and historical societies. He was a recognized expert on Douglas County and surrounding areas history. Survivors include his brother, Jimmy Baggett of Magnolia Springs, Ala., and Neal Baggett of Bishop, Ga., and several cousins. A graveside service will be held at 1 p.m. at Rosehaven Cemetery today with Whitley-Garner at Rosehaven Funeral Home of Douglasville in charge of arrangements.
In the early 1800's John Cannady is shown as a surveyor and chain dragger. In the 1850 census his occupation is listed as Mechanic. Are these the same? Can anyone expound on the occupation of a mechanic in this time frame? Thank you in advance, ClaudiaGet more from the Web. FREE MSN Explorer download : http://explorer.msn.com
Hi -- Anyone working on the Olbon family? I have a death cert for Minnie Belle (Forrester) Nixon Olbon. She was the daughter of Jesse Forrester & Martha Sibley. Minnie was married 1st to Joseph Drewry Nixon in Coweta Co on 28 Dec 1885; they were, um, divorced (for lack of a better word) by the 1900 census. Sometime after the 1920 census, she married a gentleman with the last name of Olbon. Questions: the information on the death cert leads one to believe that Bowman was in Hart Co., as well as the town of Royston. But information on the 'net shows Bowman to be in Elbert Co. and Royston to be in Franklin Co. Help! Can anyone clarify the proper locations of those towns? Below is the information on her death certificate. Thank you in advance for your help! Valerie (Johnson) Freeman ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Cert #33-10884 1. Those of you who have connections to Family Cemeteries or Country Cemeteries in rural areas need to be aware that City Governments and County Governments are looking for places to bury indigents for free, so if you do not have By-Laws or Restrictions filed with the County/State Record keepers, that prohibit or identify who can be buried there, you need to write and adopt some. Counties from the Northeast have been contacting rural Cemetery Associations in Texas, in an effort to find a place to put their indigents... Most rural Cemeteries do not want outsiders filling up their open spaces with folks whose families cannot be located and cannot pay for the upkeep of the grave either...they were intended for the residents of that community... I would appreciate contact from anyone who has experience drawing up these by-laws. _________________________________________________________________ MSN Photos is the easiest way to share and print your photos: http://photos.msn.com/support/worldwide.aspx

This is what I have found out about inthe last few days: Thomas Hersey's sons: Elkanah George Washington Hersey and Enoch Hersey had children... Two of those children: Jacob Elkanah and Margaret Hersey married. Jacob was Elkanah's son and Margaret was Enoch Hersey's duaghter....that is where my connection really starts!! Here is the rest of my information.... This is my information on my Hersey line through Thomas Hersey. Thomas Hersey married Rebecca Spivey....and they had one child that I know of...his name was Elkanah George Washington Hersey. He was born 1831....and died in 1880. Elkanah G.W. Hersey married Charlotte Surrancy. They had the following children: Francis Hersey: 1859... John Manning : Oct 28, 1861 Will Henry: 1863 Martha: 1866 Aaron: jan 7, 1869 James Monroe: Oct 29, 1870 George Washington: June 17, 1877 Jacob Elkanah Hersey: June 17, 1877...died 11 Nov 1963.(my great grandfather) I am still researching this information from different sources who have given me information....so I am not sure about who they married or when they died....I have alot to input into my tree.... But Jacob married Margaret Hersey in 1901....and they had the following children: Pearl Hersey: 1902....she married a Jule Hersey Desso Hersey: JUl 7, 1906: he married a woman named Ora Mae. Allie Hersey: April 1911 Idus Hersey: 31 Aug 1913: Married Beatrice Sears Margaret Magdaline: 8 Jun 1917 (she is still living and lives in FL): she married Riley Cleveland Hodges. Allie was my grandmother....and she married Clifford Hodges. So if anyone has anymore information or if you are a descendant of any of the above...please email me or post your replies....would love to know more about the relatives and all.... Stephanie
I refer back to this list/table all the time to locate when counties were created and how they were split up: Georgia Counties Selection List -- part of the GA Gen Web site: http://www.rootsweb.com/~gagenweb/table.htm Valerie (Johnson) Freeman Tustin, California "History Never Written is Soon Forgotten" ~~Wally Smith, Campbell Co., GA Gen Web Coordinator
The Polk County Web Site for AHGP has been updated with several new Cemetery Surveys. We would like to have all of the Cemeteries in Polk County online. If you have surveyed a Cemetery or would be willing to survey one, please e-mail us so we can put you on the list. Several people have submitted Obits and they will be posted as soon possible. Our Computer problem seems to be better, and hopefully next week will be a more productive week. Kathye is still interested in identifying her Mystery people in the photo on the Mystery Photo page. If you think you might know them, she would love to hear from you. Happy Searching Doris Robbins Polk Co Host for AHGP http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/

My name is Marianne, I am writing to let you know that my husband David died April 20, 2002. I will be closing down his e-mail address but I am not doing away with his work. Right now I can't deal with anybody touching anything of David's that includes our son , I've told him that will go through things later not now. Later I will be glad to try and find in his paper anything that any of you might need. But please give me time. The e-mail address that you may reach me at is [email protected] Again I am asking that you give me time I am very near my breaking point. Thank you, Marianne Williamson
