John Rigdon is sure not the one to attack another person. Not with all the bad baggage that him and his many commerical companies have . I think Virginia Crilley has done a great job helping people out with her posted things. She certainly does not need to be attacted. And yes John Rigdon does need to be banned from posting on all "free" genealogy sites. LTATUM

The Salt Lists are broken down into years, from 1862 in some counties till 1864. These lists provide the names of the wives, widows, heads of household, orphans of soldiers, disabled soldiers and families dependent on the labor of a soldier at war who were receiving salt rations. These lists are invaluable in determining service for some men in some cases where records cannot be located. You can also determine for example that a woman was a WIFE in 1863 and a widow in 1864. If you are doing research in the following Counties: FRANKLIN, HABERSHAM, STEPHENS, RABUN, WHITE, BANKS OR JACKSON COUNTIES, my books entitled THESE MEN WORE GREY has these lists for you broken down into years, and categories of wives, widows, etc. They are also alphabetized. I have seen no other publication that breaks these down for you as I have done in my books. I give you the complete lists. For more information on my books and their contents of burials, muster rolls, militia enrollments, Salt lists, pensions, letters home, go to: http://www.hartcom.net/~scv935/grey If you have questions e-mail me directly at [email protected] Thank you for your attention and I hope this is helpful. I have been told of a "Salt List" in Georgia. this lists was comprised of persons who served or died in the Civil War. Do you know anything about this list and where I might locate it? Thanks for your help! Grace S. Lee [email protected]
http://www.rootsweb.com/~gataylor/taycen.htm#salt This page gives helpful information about the Salt Lists... It gives the LDS microfilm and also the name of the book which is published. The book doesn't contain all the information that the microfilm Census does... but at least it will quickly tell you if who you are looking for is on it. There's also a link on there for one for Taylor County, so you can see what it tells. No, it is a list of people who provided with salt if their men were serving in the war. I know that the Augusta library has it. ----- Original Message ----- From: Olivia Saffold <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Monday, June 10, 2002 6:28 PM Subject: Re: [GA-Roots] Salt List > > > > I have been told of a "Salt List" in Georgia. this lists was > > comprised of persons who served or died in the Civil War. > > > > Do you know anything about this list and where I might > > locate it? > > > > Thanks for your help! > > Grace S. The following was found while indexing for the DAR. It comes from DAR GRC Records series 3, Volume 22 # 38796 Pages 41 and 42. To see all the Georgia Bible Records that I have visit my web page. Scroll to Georgia Records and click on Bible Records. Many are typed and posted, two Volumes are not yet typed. As they are typed they will be posted. If you would like to have a certain one that I have not yet typed, I will be happy to do it, just give me some time to do it, as I am very busy right now. I will type them in the order the request come in. These records were sent to DAR in 1933. I'll probably get unsubbed for this, but I for one am disgusted with the hypocrisy you display and lauding Ancestry while at the same time doing everything you can to hurt other commercial ventures. Here's a great Civil War Book.....not only the story, but the bibliography is the best I've seen. You'll find so many resources to check for your own ancestors! ww.mangham.org. The book's title is: "Oh, For a Touch of the Vanished Hand": Discovering a Southern Family and the Civil War. Here's a review of it...and I agree with everything he said about this book!! (Source: Smoky Mountain Books, http://www.smokymountainmarketplace.com/ctshop/index.html?catalog6_1.html) Civil War Oh, For a Touch of the Vanished Hand Many of us have gotten wrapped up in the search for a Civil War ancestor, looking for the paths he walked, the people he met, the sights he saw. Some of us have done a pretty comprehensive search, enough to perhaps write a book about, if only we could find a publisher for a study of such narrow scope. But Dana Mangham the author of this colossal family history, has done almost every one of us one better. This is a mammoth book, eight hundred pages of not-very-big print, and it is a tremendous lesson in how much we can learn about our ancestors in the Civil War if only we are willing to dig through the dust mite infected archives of materials that surround us all. Dana Mangham is well qualified to research and tell such a tale. A history instructor at West Point, he comes to the task with a lifetime of training in things military and in the methods of an historian. What he has produced is not the story of one man in the army, but of an entire generation of his family who fought for the Confederacy~ for the most part from their native Georgia. He was lucky to find in his quest a vast body of research done by earlier generations, but as with all professionals with genuine skill, much of that good luck was homemade. As he says in his introduction, he seeks, with admirable success, to combine the disciplines of genealogy and history in ways that the strengths of each will compliment each other, and to a great degree he succeeds. The story begins with the marriage of John Mangham and Frances Bennett in Virginia in 1694 It carries to the Civil War, where it ties together the experiences of over two dozen regiments, as various members of the Mangham clan fight on fields that range from Gettysburg to Pleasant Hill. If you have ever wondered how much you might be able to discover about your own forebears of the nineteenth century, there is no better example than this book of how much one person can discover. Howdy all, I had an idea for making the placement of your info online easier (we hope!) We're calling it "Project Share". I just made a web site at: http://www.rootsweb.com/~garichmo/share/ Lets say you have 2 marriages for Walton County, GA. Go to the above URL, place your info there, click on the submit button when you're done entering it, & it'll come to me. We'll then get in touch with the Walton County webmaster & give them your info to put online. Lets say you had all the SMITH marriages you could find for Walton County, after you submit it, we'll contact Walton County webmaster & let them have that info, & then put it into the Walton County Archvies, OR you can specify JUST to put it in the Walton County Archives only & we'll do that. I hope you all can keep us busy!! Until then, I'd like to say thank you for sharing! >>Our FREE sites are a part of GAGenWeb or AHGP (and I don't mean to speak for them)...or whatever..<< Virginia, You said it very well. AHGP is a FREE site that people can post their information on. It is also made up by volunteers. We do not get paid for the work we do maintaining the web sites. Unless you want to count the good feeling that we get when we are able to help someone break down a brick wall or connect with others researching the same family. Let me say one more thing about AHGP. The material submitted remains the property of the author. In other words the author retains the copyright to the material. The author is the only one that can request removal of the material. The information will never be placed in a book, CD or sold to a third party by anyone at AHGP. All FREE sites need the help of volunteers with gathering material. They also need transcribers and people to do Look-ups, Cemetery Surveys, and Special Projects. I would encourage everyone to e-mail their favorite site's host and volunteer to help. Thanks, Doris Robbins GA Host for AHGP http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state/
You do have a tough one and I think the advice given you on the Pike County list probably covered most of the basics. I'll just share a few ideas....but mainly don't give up. The only thing I would suggest is to explore the land he bought from Andrew J. Carden in 1839. Do you have the actual deed? This one probably won't tell you anything....but you might then try to follow the trail backwards to how Andrew J. got the land. When you think about it, if he was born in 1820 (and I assume this is based on a census)....then he was only 19 when he bought that land? Where did he get that money?? He even bought the land BEFORE he married! So he wasn't using any of Nancy's money! Land ownership is sort of circumstantial evidence, but it may be all you have! Draw yourself a time line of all the Cardens in Pike county....their ages, where they lived, and you may discover something you didn't see before. TAX lists are so hard to find, but they do give information.....showing what he owned. Pike County was part of Original County MONROE...(not to be confused with the present day Monroe Co.) This land was all distributed in the 1821 lottery. What was the age of Andrew J? Could he have been a brother? An uncle? What was price that Owen paid for the land and did it compare with other land prices of the time? Then pursue the McLeod family and their land purchases. They tell me that at that time people usually married within families of a very small radius. And if we could ever get a land plat of surrounding farms, we'd probably find all the spouses. Where was Owen in the 1840 Census? If you haven't found him in an index, was he living with someone else? (Those are usually harder to locate!) Who was his wife living with in AL? If she didn't apply for a pension, she must have had another source of income... Do you know the company for Hilliard's? My grandfather fought in the same Legion....although he always lived in GA. To die in 1862 was pretty early in the war...so his wife must have had some means of support??? With that many children, and the eldest ones being daughters....have you followed any of their married lines... these are all off your main track, but you never know when some relative may have saved a letter or even that elusive Bible Record that you need!! You may just have to let this one "set" for a while....and work on transcribing something that might help someone else!! Why don't you type up his Military Record that you do have and post it on-line....it might help someone because it probably lists some officers, etc. Does it tell you the battle he died in....or the hospital if it was a disease? Just one tiny point of clarification....(and I don't mean to start a discussion on this subject!) Our FREE sites are a part of GAGenWeb or AHGP (and I don't mean to speak for them)...or whatever.. We are all merely hosted on the Server of Rootsweb. You'll notice that AHGP has a similar situation in their URL and is likewise stored on Rootsweb. There has always been much confusion that GAGenWeb (a part of USGenWeb) is actually owned or run by Rootsweb.com which then joined with Ancestry.com. This is not true....GAGenWeb is made up of all Volunteers, who give of their time....nobody is paid!! And we have no direct connection with Ancestry or Rootsweb other than they're being generous enough to provide us with FREE space. And I am very, very grateful to them for it. Ancestry/Rootsweb provide the Message Boards and all these mailing list....and GAGenWeb and AHGP are able to freely make use of them. Volunteers manage both the Message Boards and the Mailing List.... Some of you may have Free pages on Yahoo...and you know that your material is not owned by them either. But the material that all of you share, will always remain FREE! Please help me clarify this concept with anyone you may be conversing with or how are nervous about putting materials on-line in GAGenWeb!! To: [email protected] Message-ID: <[email protected]> Subject: Re: [GEORGIA] GA AHGP Web Site Content-Type: text/plain; charset="US-ASCII" Content-Transfer-Encoding: 7bit Well, thank goodness for that. Ever since Ancestry took over Rootsweb I've been waiting with a leery eye for them to make the research sites "paid" sites instead of free ones. Virginia Crilley
Virigina, You wanted everyone to ask questions, so here's some. I need some advice, on where I should look for information on my major "brick wall" ancestor! His name is O.H.R. or also listed as Owen N.K. Carden. This is what I have on him, but I have been unable to find who his parents were, and I need help desperately! He was born in 1820 in Ga., don't know the county. He bought land from an Andrew Jackson Carden in 1839 in Pike Co. Ga. He married Nancy McLeod in 1843 in Pike Co. Ga., and they were listed in the 1850 census for Pike Co. Ga. They moved to Alabama, sometime after 1854, and I believe they were in Tallapoosa Co. Al. He served with Hillard's Legion during the Civil War, and he died in 1862 and they say it was around Atlanta, not from a battle, but probably from a disease! His wife, Nancy was in Randolph Co. Al., in 1870, and then in Chambers Co. Al., 1880. I don't know where she went after that, nor do I know where she is buried. Their children were: Sarah, Margaret Mary Jane Nancy Amanda Norman Alexander Owen Hendrix, my GGrandfather. I have his and Nancy's marriage license, I have the land deeds where he bought the land from Andrew Jackson, I have the info on his service in the Civil War, from the Alabama Archives, and I tried to find out if there was an application for a pension and they said, they didn't have a record. I have joined every mailing list, that I thought would help. I've posted messages on every message board I can think of, and I've still not been able to find who his parents were. There were several other Carden's in Pike Co. at the same time he was, and some feel, he may be connected to a John Carden or a David Carden, and somehow to this Andrew Jackson Carden, but I can't find any documentation! If you or anyone else, can give me any advice, or where else to look I would be most appreciative! I have been looking for over two years, to no avail! Thank you for any help you or anyone else might be able to give me! Becky Carden, [email protected]
