    3. They are college fraternities... -----Original Message----- From: Paula [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Friday, July 26, 2002 8:14 PM To: [email protected] Subject: [GA-CEM] Symbols on Markers Have a question that I hope someone can answer. While doing a cemetery survey we ran across a marker in fairly rough shape but was able to make out some of the markings on it. Just under the name there was a set of three symbols "theta kappa omega" and then a space and another set of three symbols "phi nu phi" and then just under that were the dates. Can someone tell me please what these symbols designate? 3. Although many of us understood the connection to college fraternities/sororities, the symbolism with cemeteries and graves is not as well known. Here is another site of interest: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/7336/tubeschristsymbols.htm BTW, with a little bit of sleuth work on the internet, I found someone in the "Theta Kappa Omega" fraternity and have sent him a note to see if he can provide some insight into the names for us. I'll say up front that I'm not knowledgeable of the Greek letters, or of other associated symbolism, but from what I understand, in the Greek alphabet Theta translates to "Th" and "Kappa" is "K" and "Omega" is either the "End" or "Eternity." Will follow up with a post from the Theta Kappa Omega member. . . if he sends me back anything.
