Oakland Cemetery. Why do folks have to pay Ancestry.com to access Oakland Cemetery. Isn't the cemetery owned by the city? Who gets the money and how much of the $69-$100 membership fees come back to the city? Who made this decision sell the records? Ann Boutwell
Ann, I have a subscription. Will be glad to look something up for you. The Oakland records on Ancestry.com were compiled by a private citizen, Rachel Leigh Grizzle, with no official relationship to the Historic Oakland Foundation (the non profit friends group that raises funds for preserving and restoring the cemetery) or the city of Atlanta. I have been told that Grizzle is the sister of a former sexton of Oakland. She conducted her own cemetery survey and sold her compiled information (without the knowledge or cooperation of either the Foundation or the City) to Ancestry.com. ----- Original Message ----- From: <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Sunday, February 10, 2002 9:22 AM Subject: Re: [GA-CEM] Cemetery Photos > Oakland Cemetery.
