The Polk County Cemetery Preservation Committee has 40 of the 110 plus cemeteries online. More will be added daily, weekly until all have been posted. Additional information has been added where known. The plan is to post the photo of the marker and link the obit, if available. This will be an ongoing project for a while. If you have additional information or would like to help with the project, contact them at pccpc@earthlink.net A list of the surveys can be found at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/polk/Cemeteries.html If you find any errors or broken links, please let me know so they can be fixed. Doris, that is an admirable project to connect the obituary with the grave monument. Excellent. I have written several articles on the importance of a properly written obituary to record the family history. http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/ArticleCheap.asp Another item we recommend is a family history plaque that is placed on graves. See: http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/LifeStoryMaitland.asp; http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/RMemorial.asp; http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/TellALifeStory.asp; http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/MemOrSmallMonument.asp This is an ideal group to communicate to others on the importance of documenting the family history through the obituary and a family history plaque. Both are gifts for future generations. Hi Doris, What a great thing it is to see volunteers put information on-line. As a Savannah native, I only wish I could be in Savannah more often to do some surveying myself. As a member of the Surry County Genealogical Association here in NC, we are also surveying all known cemeteries in Surry County and hope to put them all on-line in the next year. Right now, we're just surveying them as to GPS, directions, etc., and hope to eventually log the names and dates of those buried. So far, we have over 200 cemeteries logged and still counting. If anyone knows of a family cemetery in Surry County, NC that might be unknown to the public, or us, please let me know and we'll research it.
