    3. HI, Recently a post to the Muscogee County list prompted questions about the Clapp Cemetery. A little back ground. . . Clapp Factory was one of the first factories in Columbus. Clapp Village was formed around it. Later the cemetery was placed on a hill overlooking the Chattahoochee River. In the early 1920's most of the land by the Chattahoochee was purchased by GA Power. Let me go on record, I am not a family memember and I am NOT DOING THIS FOR PAY. My husband's family cemetery is part of Ft. Benning. . once upon a time Ft. Benning wasn't keeping the cemeteries up. My Mother in law had a discussion with the post commander - those cemeteries (57 of them) are being cared for. My Mother in law was there to speak for them. I'm here to speak for Clapp. According to the records I've found, it is reported that American Indians, Confederate soldiers, slaves, and poor people were buried there. I guess there is no one (loud enough) to speak for these people. The cemetery is now overgrown. It is covered with trash. GA Power says it's not their responsibility to do the upkeep on the cemetery. There are a couple of families who are interested in getting the place cleaned up. Let me say this will be a monumental undertaking. . . help. . . not physical labor at this point but directions. There has been an archeological survey done in 1998 by Brockington and Associates, Inc. They are checking to see if they can release a copy of their report. Friday, I will visit Columbus State Library (CSU) for all the info they have on the factory, village and cemetery. I have already checked everything at the Bradley Library. I have searched the internet and found everything I can on it (and collected some email addresses). I've sent email to the surrounding county lists to see if anyone had info. I have talked to Historical Columbus Foundation (they've been to the cemetery since I called with a gentleman from GA Power), Linwood Historical Foundation, one former reporter (who is a local historian), former curator (excuse the spelling) of the Bradley Museum (he is the local authority on Indians - as there is suppose to be a Indian burial ground across from Clapp Cemetery), and a CSU history professor (and local historian - he has written several books.) I am emailing certain family members with all the info I find. What else can I do at this time to help? We know that NO cleaning will be done during the summer months. . . to many snakes and ticks. Have any of you found cemeteries on GA Power property? One thing that may be in our favor. . . Columbus has a riverwalk that starts about a 1/2 mile from the cemetery. You have to walk on the riverwalk to get to either of the cemeteries. . . the riverwalk divides the cemeteries. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have an Indian burial ground and local cemetery that represents the towns mill heritage . . . especially in the days where our manufacturing facilities are being lost to 3rd world countries? Any clues, directions, hints, or words of encouragement would be great. Thanks, kemis
