    2. Oakland Cemetery Burials
    3. Hello list, I wanted to let you know that I have launched a new website for Oakland Cemetery in Atlanta. The purpose of the site is to provide a searchable index to grave photographs and a transcription of records for all known burials in the cemetery from its founding in 1850 to today. Currently, the website includes a database of photographs for more than 2,000 marked graves in the Confederate section of the cemetery. In this section, there are men from all the Southern states who died in hospitals in and around Atlanta from 1862 to 1864. Just click on the "Civil War Burials" link. Over time, the site contents will expand to over 40,000 photographs and more than 70,000 burial records. 3. Hi, Folks. I just wanted to let everyone know that we've been making great progress on the cleanup and restoration of Sylvester Cemetery, thanks in large part to Dennis Taylor, who is the newly elected president of the Sylvester Cemetery Foundation and Jerry Semprevino (the Secretary and webmaster). Jerry has updated the website with new photos, history, and an inventory of the burials there. The website is http://www.sylvestercemetery.org/ I'm very excited about what we've managed to do. If any of you have an interest in Sylvester Cemetery we could also use both volunteers to help with the cleanups and monetary donations. If anyone would like a tour of the cemetery, or wants help finding a family member's grave, email me at larryfeltonj@yahoo.com Larry -- ======================================================== "It is better to be roughly right than precisely wrong." -- attributed to John Maynard Keynes ========================================================

    2. I am definitely interested in seeing your pictures of the cemetery and graves. I contacted the U. of TX for possible info. on the Stout papers re: the Army of TN at Utoy Creek. The researcher said he had no record of a hospital at the church or any way to look it up. Maybe the Georgia Archives has some records re: the hospital and burials at Utoy. Thanks so much for going to check it out. Let me know how the best way to see your pictures. Janet Walker Macon, GA From: "Leon Culberson" <dlcjr@bellsouth.net> Date: 2005/12/30 Fri PM 03:18:40 EST To: GA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: RE: [GA-CEM] Fulton Co. Utoy Creek Battle & church cemetery There is only one identified grave at Utoy Cemetery. It is of Cannon Hankins, 2 Regt, (Ashby's) Tenn Cav, 1837-1864. There is a field stone marker directly behind this marker. All of the others (17 total) are marked Unknown Confederate Soldier and are the latest vintage tombstone...except for 8 older stones. These 8 are gray in color and smaller than the newer stones. They are all marked with a number that ranges from 59 to 489 and are inscribed with "unknown", in script, under the number. Knowing that the Army of Tennessee kept very good records at their hospitals, I would venture a guess that a some point in time, someone had the records necessary to match some of the graves to the soldiers buried in them. The Confederate burials are at the back (northwest side) of the cemetery and are arranged in a semi-random way. They are in rows, but not the well laid out rows of a National Cemetery. One grave is about 60' from the others. There is a remnant of a trench line next to the graves. Generally, the cemetery is in unkept condition, with much scrub growth and undergrowth. There are at least three Revolutionary War veterans buried in the Cemetery. There are also 5 confederate veterans who survived the war buried there. A metal sign was erected next to the cemetery entrance many years ago that explained the significance of the church and cemetery. It is mostly unreadable. It was erected by the Utoy Cemetery Association, Franklin Garrett Custodian. 3. I wish that most local monument dealers had the views that you do. I recall once that I approached a local dealer and explained what I do and that I wanted to get a quote on leveling a huge Woodman of the world Monument. He gave me a quote and I set out to raise the funds. One day I go to the cemetery and the monument is taken apart and a foundation was poured and being allowed to dry. I was kind of beside myself because I thought he had started the work before I gave the go ahead and raised the funds. I called and was suprised to hear him say, "No Charge". He provided it voluntarily. That type of thing as well as the intrest you take are refreshing. > > From: "Burton Fletcher" <fletcher@callourlawyers.com> > Date: 2005/12/30 Fri PM 12:03:13 EST > To: GA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: RE: [GA-CEM] Family Cemetery on Hensley Road, Greene County > > > This sounds like an excellent project for local monument builders and the > Boy Scouts. > > Burton Fletcher > www.ValdostaMemorials.com > > > -----Original Message----- > From: gc-gateway@rootsweb.com [mailto:gc-gateway@rootsweb.com] On Behalf Of > rada-paul@msn.com > Sent: Friday, December 30, 2005 11:18 AM > To: GA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com > Subject: [GA-CEM] Family Cemetery on Hensley Road, Greene County > > This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. > > Surnames: FULLER, BROWNING, BURFORD, DANIEL > Classification: Query > > Message Board URL: > > http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/Eo.2ADEAE/393 > > Message Board Post: > > Does anyone know whose family cemetery is on Hensley Road which runs off GA > Highway 77 (slightly northeast of Greensboro)? It is walled, heavily overgrown, but visible from Hensley Road on Boswell property. The overgrowth of thorny brush, shrubs and trees makes it impossible to enter and examine the stones in there, but it is possible that it may contain the graves of my early Georgia ancestor, Elijah Fuller, who moved to Greene Co. ca. 1787/88, and his first wife Cenith (Sincy) Browning. Any information on who is interred in this cemetery would be very much appreciated. ==== GA-CEMETERIES Mailing List ==== NOTICE: Posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc. (in other words - spam) is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. 3. This sounds like an excellent project for local monument builders and the Boy Scouts. Surnames: Smith Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Eo.2ADEAE/392 Message Board Post: I believe my gggrandfather is buried at Pleasant Grove. Does anyone have a list of those buried there. I am looking for Aaron Smith b.1802 d. June 18, 1890; wife Nancy Jones Israel b. Nov 16, 1805 d. Jun 1889. I would love to visit this area sometime. They lived on the Old Federal Hwy and I believe a Scudder (sp) family was their neighbor according to a war letter by Wilbur Fisk Smith. I would be very thankful for any help on this cemetery and area. Many thanks. Connie at cpbarnwell@charter.net
