    3. I want to thank those who gave me tips on cemeteries in the Brunswick to St. Augustine area. I had a great time photographing interesting monuments over three days last weekend. Sadly, most monuments do not provide many details to inform the reader of the life of the deceased; those that do are a joy to read. Family history plaques can solve this weakness in memorialization. Please encourage everyone you know to document their family history in obituaries and on the family memorials as both are valuable historical records as this group certainly knows. Again, my thanks to those who provided me with tips on interesting cemeteries. Burton Fletcher Valdosta Burton@USAMonuments.com

    2. If you will check, that will be great. I have already looked at the DeKalb rootsweb site, The DeKalb History Center site, the Garrett info. from the Atlanta History Center (couldn't get it) and other DeKalb sites. Sometimes the cemetery is listed, but no burial info. or lists or directions or other info. Hopefully you have visited there and have transcribed it already! 2. Bob Carter
    3. Hi Doris, What a great thing it is to see volunteers put information on-line. As a Savannah native, I only wish I could be in Savannah more often to do some surveying myself. As a member of the Surry County Genealogical Association here in NC, we are also surveying all known cemeteries in Surry County and hope to put them all on-line in the next year. Right now, we're just surveying them as to GPS, directions, etc., and hope to eventually log the names and dates of those buried. So far, we have over 200 cemeteries logged and still counting. If anyone knows of a family cemetery in Surry County, NC that might be unknown to the public, or us, please let me know and we'll research it. 2. This is a Message Board Post that is gatewayed to this mailing list. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/an/Eo.2ADEAE/429.3 Message Board Post: I don't think Stone Mtn Cem. has a sexton. I've never noticed an office of any kind there. In the late 1800's the cemeteries in St. Mtn. were Wade family, Veal family, Vinson family, Dean, Zion Baptist, Howell family, Snead-Smith, Smith-McElroy, Jones-Perkins-Hawkins, Midway Presbyterian and Johnson -Goldsmith --- all of these are on the Tombstone Transcription Project website except Dean which is no longer in existence and Snead-Smith. Stone Mountain's transcription is also at this website. Chris Davis did a great job transcribing that HUGE cemetery. Rock Chapel may refer to the Rock Chapel Cem. in Lithonia. Remember towns around Atlanta kind of merge into one another. I have the transcription for Rock Chapel. That church kept excellent records. Also there was a Mountainview Cemetery which was absorbed by Melwood, now a perpetual care cem. next to Zion Baptist. Remember almost all adult white people buried prior to 1930 within a 25 miles radius of Atlanta were recorded by Franklin Garrett on his necrology. Dekalb's part of that are on the Dekalb History Center website. The other counties are at the state archives and the Atlanta History Center but are not available on line.

    3. Doris, that is an admirable project to connect the obituary with the grave monument. Excellent. I have written several articles on the importance of a properly written obituary to record the family history. http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/ArticleCheap.asp Another item we recommend is a family history plaque that is placed on graves. See: http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/LifeStoryMaitland.asp; http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/RMemorial.asp; http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/TellALifeStory.asp; http://www.valdostamemorials.com/articles/MemOrSmallMonument.asp This is an ideal group to communicate to others on the importance of documenting the family history through the obituary and a family history plaque. Both are gifts for future generations. If your Thomas died after 1848, The Atlanta History Center may have a record. I can't remember the gentleman's name, now deceased, but he prepared a necropolis of the deaths in the Atlanta area of white males from notices found in Atlanta newspapers. It might be worth a try at <www.atlantahistorycenter.com>. Good luck. I finally got a hold of the City Clerk for Stone Mountain who has an index by name. No luck, though. She indicated that many of the graves have no marker so I may never get confirmation if Thomas is buried there. If anyone can suggest any other cemeteries in the DeKalb area that would have been around in 1892 I would appreciate it.
