    2. Pat Enterkin
    3. Today we finished the New Hope Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery survey and it should be on-line very soon. We counted 630 graves and there are numerous partial stones and bricks sticking out of the ground that may or may not be markers for graves. If anyone has relatives buried in that cemetery, you might want to check their grave site markers. Don't know if it is due to the storms or vandalism, but many of the very old and tall monuments have been damaged. Some have toppled over, broken into, and some have the ornaments/decorative pieces on the monuments broken off. This is a very old historical cemetery and should be preserved as much as possible. One interesting note about the cemetery. We found veterans from the 1812 War, Civil War, W.W.I., WWII. Viet Nam, and Korean Wars. There were more Confederate flags on graves than any other. There were also a very large number of infants buried there. It was not unusual to find family plots with one to three infants buried side by side. This must have been a very painful experience for the parents. Doing the survey was very satisfying and rewarding and if someone is helped by the information, it will be even more rewarding. 3. Lorrie: There is another group in the East Point area working to preserve Hillcrest Cemetery. I do not have a name, but someone on this list probably does and can send it to you. You might try coordinating your efforts. In addition you might try the Boy Scouts, local law enforcement/or whoever is responsible for community service projects. We have community service people working in our city cemetery and I don't know what the correct procedure is for getting this help. You might also get the local newspapers to write about the projects and see if you can raise some money or get some help or at least make people aware. I know that the city officials in East Point have received many emails, calls, and letters on Hillcrest and I believe (I may be wrong) that they have offered some help. Keep us informed. Pat

    1. [GA-CEM] Need help to preserve abandoned Cemetery!
    2. Lorrie Burns
    3. Hi, I sure hope someone can help us! There is a cemetery in East Point, GA that has been abandoned! It is Roseland Cemetery. Roseland is located on the north side of Cleveland Ave. in southwest Atlanta, just west (& right next to) Interstate 85 freeway, and about a block east if the East Point city limits. It contains about 461 lots that will hold up to 6 graves per lot. It is approx 8 acres. It is in deplorable condition! There are trees and bushes growing in and around the graves. People have been dumping trash and old furniture in a ravine toward the back of the property. Homeless people are actually living there! Bill and Gwen Gazaway who have family members buried there, as I do, started a volunteer organization to get the cemetery cleaned up. In the last year, several trees have been removed and graves uncovered. As a matter of fact, they finally got the city of Atlanta to remove about 5000 tires that had been dumped on top of graves!!! Some families have donated money, others their time and effort. However, it is overwhelming! Even with all the mowing and weed eating taking place, it just has to be done again and again and therefore it's hard to actually make forward progress. Many of the graves are covered in fire ant beds! Also, many of the relatives of those buried there cannot be located or are probably dead themselves. Most of those we've contacted are retired or older and therefore do not have the strength, ability, or finances to do all that is necessary! We just do not have the money to restore the cemetery as it should be and to remove the many huge remaining trees. All we can hope to do is keep the grass cut and weeds pulled. Does anyone know of any organization that we might be able to get to help us with the expense and or volunteers to help us with this massive undertaking? Is there any type of funding for this type of effort? Can anyone point me in the right direction????? PLEASE, if anyone can help with any information that might help, I would be so thankful to hear from you. My email address is [email protected] Thanking you in advance, Lorrie Parham Burns P.S. There are many war veterans buried there, including at least one confederate soldier who died in the late 1800s. There are also some Jewish graves.
