Nellie, I can tell you just a bit about the cemetery. The survey that I have online is a complete one unless there are some unmarked graves that no one is aware of. The caretakers of the cemetery (the church) supposedly destroyed the only lists that anyone might have had of who was buried there or that is the answer I got when I started asking questions because I wanted to check the list off against what I had surveyed to see if I had everyone. There is one name on my survey that I did not find in the cemetery and I got the name from the Whitfield County Cemetery book for which the surveys were made back in the 70's. The guy may have had a funeral home marker and it been destroyed by now so that may be why I couldn't find it. Anyway, the land for the church and the cemetery was donated by the Lindsey family from what I was told by Miss Birdie. She had also told me years ago to not worry that I would always have a place to be buried but now the church says no, that anyone other than church members must pay the church for the space. The only ones that I was personally acquainted with were J. R.(Rob) and Miss Birdie. Rob was a hard man to like but Miss Birdie was one of the sweetest people on this earth. I visited with her many times when I was much younger and just wish that I had had enough since to work on genealogy and stuff way back then. I can't really tell you anything about the family but that they were some of the first people to settle out in the Lower Mill Creek area of the county. I also don't know what the relationship to each other the ones buried in the cemetery are except that there is a relationship. I am interested in this cemetery as my GG Grandmother Elizabeth Lindsey Alsobrook's mother was Phoebe Whitfield and married a Lindsey. There has to be some connection here somewhere, I think. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Paula" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Thursday, March 14, 2002 7:52 AM Subject: [GA-CEM] Whitfield County Web Site > I have just completed and added the survey of Lindsey Memorial Church Cemetery to the Whitfield County Web site at: > http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/whitfield > I also have parts of several other cemetery surveys online and more are being added almost daily. The Georgia State AHGP web site has been updated. Three more counties have been adopted and are now online. Be sure to request your county before they are all adopted. Don't forget to check out the "Brick Wall" Page. Several new postings have been listed this week. See if you can help these people break down their 'brick wall'. Who knows, they could have information on one of your relatives to help break down your 'brick wall'. Be sure to bookmark the sites and visit often as new information is being added almost daily. Hi, I am wondering if anyone has any information on Washington Memorial Gardens. Our family has several members buried there and I am looking for info. Regards, BJ
Hi, Just a reminder, if you will be out at the cemetery this weekend making pictures, please make a few extra to share with those researchers not fortunate enough to be from this area or that are not able to travel to the cemeteries. I have received many comments from people saying that they would appreciate anyone that can do this because they are unable to travel for health reasons and have to do all their research by computer or mail. So please, if you haven't finished that roll off on your own find a few extra burial markers and snap them, scan the pictures and email them to me along with the cemetery name and county and I will get them posted in hopes they may help other researchers. Photos are not limited to what you take this weekend. If you have old ones lying around that you would be willing to share you may send them also. If you do not have scan capabilities please contact me and we will work something out to do them by snail mail. Many, many thanks from me and all the other researchers out here in internet land. Hi All, Today I posted photos for most of the burials at Mt. Salem Baptist Church Cemetery in Rocky Face, GA (Whitfield County) The URL to view them is http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/whitfield/MtSalemCemBlk.html I have also updated West Hill Cemetery in Dalton, GA (Whitfield County) and have placed about 20 more pics online for it. West Hill includes names such as Bowen, Whitener, Whitfield, Henderson, Cleckler and Edwards. The URL for West Hill Cemetery is http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/whitfield/WestHillCem.html Stop by and check out the cemeteries page today before the weekend rush starts. http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/county/whitfield/Cemeteries.html We have more photos that will be coming in the next two weeks to post online for your use and are willing to post any that you would like to send us also. Thank you, Paula
Hi All, The following message was posted on another mailing list that I subscribe to and I thought it might be a good idea to pass along. A lot of you will be going there to make those pics anyway so why not add a few more as a kindness to those not able to be there to make their own. Some may not be able to travel and some may just live too far away. Do other genealogy researchers a big favor and include those extras. Then if you will email them to me and specify the cemetery, I will post them online for other researchers to see. > Greetings, all! > With this weekend being Memorial Day, and several of you will be > traveling to cemeteries, I would like to suggest that you take a digital > camera with you, and take some photos of the tombstones in the cemeteries > that you visit. Small cemeteries can easily be covered by one person, but > larger cemeteries would need several people to take photos. > This is just an idea I'm floating/proposing, since cemeteries usually > look their best at Memorial Day, and it usually isn't too hot yet to be > out. >>so there is somewhere to put all these photos once we gather them. On behalf of all the other researchers out there and myself I would like to thank you in advance for your kindness. Paula Georgia AHGP http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state/ email to [email protected]
