    1. [GA-CEM] GA AHGP Receives Award
    2. Doris Robbins
    3. Georgia AHGP just received two awards from Hogan's Hutch of Usual & Unusual Sites. In Lou Hogan's message he said that it is "a very impressive, and beautifully designed site. You should be very proud; it's sites like yours that make the Web great. " Don't mean to brag, but first award that I have ever received. But I could not have done it without the help of the many Georgia Researchers that contributed information to the site. They can be seen on the main page at http://www.usgennet.org/usa/ga/state/ While visiting, check out the new Message Boards. There are four of them. Family Stories ~ Queries ~ Surnames ~ Web Sites. Just follow the links under the Awards. Thanks to everyone for making it such a great site. Doris

    3. Researching: Duke, Evans, Hickey, Mays, Rosamond, Songer, and Camp for me Researching: Brooks, Chambers, Massey, Fountain, and Smith for my hubbie This came from another list. . . how true it is. kemis ***************************************************************************************** *REPOSTING for those who are new to the Lists.... *This was sent to me by another genealogist.....I dont know the actual author's name.* *Tina* ********************************************************************************************** The Story Tellers..... We are the chosen. My feelings are in each family there is one who seems called to find the ancestors. To put flesh on their bones and make them live again, to tell the family story and to feel that somehow they know and approve. To me, doing genealogy is not a cold gathering of facts but, instead, breathing life into all who have gone before. We are the story tellers of the tribe. All tribes have one. We have been called as it were by our genes. Those who have gone before cry out to us: Tell our story. So, we do. In finding them, we somehow find ourselves. How many graves have I stood before now and cried? I have lost count. How many times have I told the ancestors you have a wonderful family you would be proud of us? How many times have I walked up to a grave and felt somehow there was love there for me? I cannot say. It goes beyond just documenting facts. It goes to who am I and why do I do the things I do? It goes to seeing a cemetery about to be lost forever to weeds and indifference and saying I can't let this happen. The bones here are bones of my bone and flesh of my flesh. It goes to doing something about it. It goes to pride in what our ancestors were able to accomplish. How they contributed to what we are today. It goes to respecting their hardships and losses, their never giving in or giving up, their resoluteness to go on and build a life for their family. It goes to deep pride that they fought to make and keep us a Nation. It goes to a deep and immense understanding that they were doing it for us. That we might be born who we are. That we might remember them. So we do. With love and caring and scribing each fact of their existence, because we are them and they are us. So, as a scribe called, I tell the story of my family. It is up to that one called in the next generation to answer the call and take their place in the long line of family storytellers. That, is why I do my family genealogy, and that is what calls those young and old to step up and put flesh on the bones. 3. Kemis, There is always an archaeological survey of the dam sites before construction begins. Cemeteries that are to be relocated have to be researched and documented. And moving them has to be documented. You might try contacting the University of GA at Athens, GA. I believe that is where the records of the West Point Dam survey are housed. Ancestor Files Research Center is a long story!! Briefly, for the past 26 years I have gathered any material known on Heard Co., GA and Randolph Co., AL (both of which lost their records in the 1890's) and have files on every surname that has ever been in any records pertaining to these counties. I also gather material on Chambers Co., AL (I am the caretaker of the Chambers Co. List and Message Boards). I have published several books on Heard and Randolph and I am now trying to get many of the items I have collected over the years, especially the cemetery records. You are welcome to come up to see the files and I do have a fairly large research library here, since I work full time also just let me know when you want to come up and I will clean off my desk (sometimes it gets pretty deep on it with notes and files). 1. [GA-CEM] Clapp Cemetery
    2. Kemis Massey
    3. HI, Recently a post to the Muscogee County list prompted questions about the Clapp Cemetery. A little back ground. . . Clapp Factory was one of the first factories in Columbus. Clapp Village was formed around it. Later the cemetery was placed on a hill overlooking the Chattahoochee River. In the early 1920's most of the land by the Chattahoochee was purchased by GA Power. Let me go on record, I am not a family memember and I am NOT DOING THIS FOR PAY. My husband's family cemetery is part of Ft. Benning. . once upon a time Ft. Benning wasn't keeping the cemeteries up. My Mother in law had a discussion with the post commander - those cemeteries (57 of them) are being cared for. My Mother in law was there to speak for them. I'm here to speak for Clapp. According to the records I've found, it is reported that American Indians, Confederate soldiers, slaves, and poor people were buried there. I guess there is no one (loud enough) to speak for these people. The cemetery is now overgrown. It is covered with trash. GA Power says it's not their responsibility to do the upkeep on the cemetery. There are a couple of families who are interested in getting the place cleaned up. Let me say this will be a monumental undertaking. . . help. . . not physical labor at this point but directions. There has been an archeological survey done in 1998 by Brockington and Associates, Inc. They are checking to see if they can release a copy of their report. Friday, I will visit Columbus State Library (CSU) for all the info they have on the factory, village and cemetery. I have already checked everything at the Bradley Library. I have searched the internet and found everything I can on it (and collected some email addresses). I've sent email to the surrounding county lists to see if anyone had info. I have talked to Historical Columbus Foundation (they've been to the cemetery since I called with a gentleman from GA Power), Linwood Historical Foundation, one former reporter (who is a local historian), former curator (excuse the spelling) of the Bradley Museum (he is the local authority on Indians - as there is suppose to be a Indian burial ground across from Clapp Cemetery), and a CSU history professor (and local historian - he has written several books.) I am emailing certain family members with all the info I find. What else can I do at this time to help? We know that NO cleaning will be done during the summer months. . . to many snakes and ticks. Have any of you found cemeteries on GA Power property? One thing that may be in our favor. . . Columbus has a riverwalk that starts about a 1/2 mile from the cemetery. You have to walk on the riverwalk to get to either of the cemeteries. . . the riverwalk divides the cemeteries. Wouldn't it be wonderful to have an Indian burial ground and local cemetery that represents the towns mill heritage . . . especially in the days where our manufacturing facilities are being lost to 3rd world countries? Any clues, directions, hints, or words of encouragement would be great. Thanks, kemis

    1. [GA-CEM] From List Mom - New Mailing List The Buffalo-Hunters
    2. Kathleen Burnett
    3. Dear List Members, I know this list will effect only a few of you, but thought I would let you know of it beginning. The Buffalo-Hunters Mailing list was approved yesterday and now is ready to subscribe to. If you have ancestors who were Buffalo Hunters and or are interested in their history, this list will be the place to learn about the Buffalo Hunters of the Old West. I had two great uncles who were hired by the U.S. Government as Buffalo Hunters. Living in 2002 I know what they did caused starvation to a group of people, waste and the near annihilation of a species. Of this I am not proud, but what they did is a part of the history of this country and I am proud of them for doing what they thought was right at that time. To join, send only the word SUBSCRIBE to [email protected] I look forward to the Buffalo-Hunters Mailing List becoming another tool for each of us to understand the world out ancestors lived in.
