Caroline, There are folks on the Georgia Cemeteries List who have access to the cemetery surveys of Savannah, so I am copying my reply to them, in case someone has more information available on your Chatham County Knights. I am sending the following death listings, partially based on who was still living and indexed in the 1920 census. If they were gone before then, they are not likely to have a death certificate available. (Based on years of birth), I found only one possibility for Allen Knight in the 1920 Georgia census index. He was indexed as Allen A. Knight, age 61, in Glynn County. Also one James Knight of the correct age (72) in Meriwether. The others are possibilities who died in Chatham. Allen A. Knight, died December 9, 1937 in Glynn County - Certificate #31907 James A. Knight, died January 30 1928 in Meriwether County - Certificate #1944-J George R. Knight died November 5, 1920 in Chatham County - Certificate #30712-B William T. Knight died November 15, 1963 in Chatham at age 96 (born 1867) - Certificate #32293 William T. Knight died October 3, 1991 in Chatham at age 96 (born 1895) - Certificate #039391 I would order the death certificates on both the William Knights who died in Chatham - just in case someone gave the wrong age at death. A closer match for your William T., (per year of birth), is: William T. Knight died July 21, 1955 in Gwinnett County at age 66 (born 1889) - Certificate #15897 And - I know this is not the Edmund Knight you need, but perhaps a son or nephew, so am sending it anyhow. Edmund C. Knight died July 20, 1958 in Chatham County at age 57 - Certificate #16959 I didn't find any Lee or Hayward in either the 1920 census or the death index. Sorry. I hope this helps. Again - much luck in your search, Linda in Georgia Census/Cemetery Lookup Volunteer Genealogy is my ONLY business. ----- Original Message ----- From: "lotswife" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Saturday, July 13, 2002 11:34 PM Subject: Re: [GA-CENSUS-LOOKUP] GEORGIA DEATH INDEX??? > Have I died and gone to Heaven? > > William T. Thank you for your reply and I apologize for taking so long getting back. Also, forgotten your first name, again, please excuse me. My Jones family appears to have come from the sw area of GA. Where before 1847 have no leads or proof. My gg grandfather appeared in Randolph Co., GA, in his acquiring a marriage license to Sarah Jane Adams. Maybe further back, our Jones family may have been one & the same, but since I am so far away from that, won't know for a while. No connection with any of them before that time (1847) and place. Have been trying to connect with an Allen Jones, Carolinas to mid Georgia, south to north Florida, Jackson Co., contiguous with my migrating Jones family's Houston Co., AL. Thank you for getting back with me. Always searching for someone who might have picked up on my Green Frank Jones of Randolph Co., GA. Betty Jones Nesmith in Birmingham, AL.

John, At this point, we are gathering data. Before we ask or accept any money for this, I will need to find the legal info about accepting it and exactly how to handle it. My purpose at this point is to get the info out to as many researchers as possible for information purposes. Since I know you have several family (I'm going to send you a separate email with questions about one of those families) members there this will be a tremendous help. I take it you are related to Buster Wright's (who was one of thee people who have done so much research on several of our cemeteries here in Muscogee County) wife. As one of the lists I pulled the names from to send the emails out was furnished by Mr. Wright. Up until recently, one researcher(at a time) has approached GA Power. . . and was told it's the families responsibility to keep the cemetery clean. Now I have 4 known family members. . . hopefully there will be more. Then it will be a lot harder to say it's your responsibility to keep it clean. Plus with everyone re-checking their family lines. . . we may have more people out there with a voice. Also, cemeteries are not my field of expertise. But there could be someone out there who it is their field. Or other info that might could help. So all of you out there reading this, even though you might not have a relative here, many have some knowledge that we sure would appreciate. For those of you who have written with your words of encouragement, thanks. We are the story tellers of our families and I like the ones with the fairy tale ending. . . kemis From: John Mallory Land Sent: Wednesday, July 10, 2002 1:25 AM Kemis, I'm sorry to have taken so long to get back with you. I have tried in vain to locate the document I told you about regarding county responsibility in the upkeep of abandoned cemeteries under Georgia state law. Perhaps someone reading this will recognize the reference. It appeared in the Family Puzzler publication some years ago, and a cousin or other contact sent me a copy of it a while back. If anyone has an index to the Family Puzzler material (if such a thing exists), we might be able to find it that way. My copy is not in any of the places I would have expected it to be; I may have had it out to copy for someone and didn't get it back to the right file. I have moved since I last recall seeing it, so I may or may not come across it, though I continue to search. I apologize for not being able to produce it for you now. If you will give me an address where I can send a personal check, I would like to make a donation toward the cause of rescuing the Clapp's Factory Cemetery. It won't be a lot, but perhaps it will help defray some of the incidental costs. I appreciate your posting the known burials there. Robert and Sarah PAGE are my ggg-grandparents, being the parents of Permelia A. PAGE (1841-1905), second wife of Henry M. NEWSOME (1836-1899). James NEWSOME buried there is Henry's brother, who I show to have been born ca. 1834 in Harris Co, GA (per the 1850 federal census of Muscogee Co, GA). My record shows James' wife Mary b. ca. 1837 in GA. Penelope, sister of James and Henry, was b. ca. 1833 in Harris Co, GA (also per 1850 census of Muscogee). They were the children of James & Elizabeth (NEWSOM) NEWSOM, who m. 07 AUG 1816 in Warren Co, GA. Knowing that these folks are buried there makes me more confident that Henry's first wife Mary Ellen ABNEY (1837-1863) and at least some of their five children may also buried in the cemetery. If more information on the NEWSOME, PAGE, and ABNEY families would be helpful to you in piecing together who is likely to be buried in the cemetery, please let me know and I'll send you some reports on them. You're doing a great job! Please keep up the effort toward this worthy goal. John Mallory Land McKinney, TX [email protected]
Hi, I know some of you have seen this email before. I have added some more names that I located and sent them this email. Maybe you'll see something new that you didn't read before. . . The purpose of this email is to attempt to locate any decedents of those buried in Clapp Cemetery in Columbus, GA. We do not know for sure who is there other than what is included in this email. That means if you write and ask me if a specific person is buried there I will not know if they are. What I am hoping is that someone's family history will help identify the persons there. Now for the rest of the story. In Columbus, GA in the 1800's we had the Clapp Factory on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. Close by the Clapp Village was built for the factory workers. Later a cemetery was placed on the hill over-looking the Chattahoochee. The Clapp Cemetery records seems to be lost. Known buried: Mary Catherine Skipper (b. Nov 28, 1825 - d. Sep 10, 1880) daughter of Isaac W. Woods and Eliza/Elizabeth Patterson, wife of Jacob S. Skipper (son of Silas S. Skipper and Esther/Ester) John P. Lewis (B. Dec 12, 1812 - D. Feb 10, 1886) Grave of a child, J.F. Cain no dates Other family names rumored to have been buried there: Hopkins, Miller, Warren, Watson (several years back Ms Watson told other locals she had 14 family members buried in the cemetery) and Bird. added names: Mrs. E. Belcher, age 71 Infant of Thomas Brown Miss Kate Cain, age 51 Miss Mary C. Clegg, age 46 Charlie C. Foster, age 4 Benjamin F. Heath, buried 1856 Louisa J. Helms, age 64, born 1816 Burre Hill, age 1, June 7, 1899 Gladis Martin, ag 49 days, April 17, 1901 Mrs. Bula Miller, age 31, March12, 1899 Evalina Miller, age 14 months, October 6, 1899 Child of Mary Miller, age 3, April 25, 1901 James Newsome, Nov 1897 Mary (Martha) Newsome, wife of above, around 1897-1898 Miss F. Penelope Newsome, age 56, sister of James Newsome, Aug 19, 1890 Edgar Alton Nix, age 1, April 13, 1904 William Page, son of Robert & Sarah Page, Private in Company A, 27th Regt. GA Militia, died 1862, Skedaway Island There are suppose to be 20 Confederate soldiers from Georgia and Alabama there. Also American Indians and Slaves are buried there. The land the cemetery is on was purchased in the 1920's by Georgia Power. Georgia Power feels it is not their responsibility to take care of the cemetery and that is a job that the families should be doing. At this point in time, I need to attempt to find as many descendants of the deceased buried in Columbus Georgia's forgotten Cemetery. Ultimately we would like to have the cemetery cleaned to the point that descendants could actually visit the graves. The cemetery is a jungle. This is a job that will have to be tackled during fall or winter. It is also a monumental undertaking. . . there is no way this would be a day's work. I have already been in touch with several descendants, several local Historic societies, several local historians, Sons of Confederate veterans, Daughters of Confederate Veterans, Boy Scouts, and Girl Scouts (still have 4H to check with) asking for guidance and help. So far all agree, if it can be done it will be monumental. I have sent an email to one of the local tv stations and haven't gotten any response. I do have a gentleman who will put the story on his web page http://www.columbusgeorgiaonline.com. It's a start. I've still need to get other media involved with so I can locate more relatives. But if you look at it as being part of your heritage to take care of your ancestors graves and we all work together, we could make the Clapp Cemetery a true resting place for those buried in a beautiful place so long ago. You are taking to time to find out where you came from. . . we are all story telling of our family history. . . add a chapter as to how you help save a forgotten resting place of loved ones. Thanks for taking the time to read my email, as it is longer than most. If you know or think you have family members buried in the Clapp Cemetery in Columbus, GA, please let me hear from you. Happy family hunting, kemis massey Researching: Duke, Evans, Hickey, Mays, Rosamond, Songer, and Camp for me Researching: Brooks, Chambers, Massey, Fountain, and Smith for my hubbie
Hi! I have just updated a couple of the cemeteries in Murray County, GA. I added another couple dozen names and photos to Fairy Valley Cemetery, about 70 more names to Liberty Baptist Church Cemetery and a couple of photos to Dewberry Cemetery. If you have cemetery photos or info to share please email it to [email protected] I have also added bits of info in other areas of the site. Thank you, Paula
List, I looking for the burial place for a John Underwood, son of Elijah Underwood and Eleanor Redman Underwood. John Underwood died ca 1849. The family was residing in Gilmer County, in the 1850 census and John's children are living in the household of David ( cousin ) and Frances Underwood. The circumstance of John death is a mystery as well as the name of the mother of his children. Harold Cochran

Dear List Members, Here it is the first of July and I am late in sending you the Second Quarterly Report. I was in Maryland and Delaware enjoying three of my children their spouses and five of my grandchildren for the 4th of July. Due to the lateness of this report I am not going to send the individual numbers of members for each of the lists I take care of. It is an all day job. If any of you really want to know how many are on your list, just e-mail me at [email protected] and ask. Be sure and let me know what list you are asking about. If you are interested in knowing about other mailing list out there, one of the very best inventories of genealogical mailing lists is John Fullers Genealogy Resources on the Internet located at http://www.rootsweb.com/~jfuller/gen_mail.html If you ever need to unsubscribe from this list or any rootsweb list all you need to do is visit Password Central located at http://passwordcentral.rootsweb.com/ Follow the instructions and you will received an e-mail of all lists you belong to and from it you can unsubscribe from the ones you want to. Always know that I will be more than happy to help you if you are having problems unsubscribing, you only need to ask. Please send this request to [email protected] not to the entire list. If you would like to visit the Archived messages of this list, go to http://archiver.rootsweb.com/ and type in the name of the list you would like to search and from there you can search by dates. There are a few items I would like to suggest for the benefit of each of us. 1. When sending a posting to the list it would help if you would put the subject of your posting in the subject line. Doing this also might give you a better chance to attract the attention of someone who has the information you are looking for or the attention of someone who is searching for the information you are posting. Many members are on many many lists and when they see a subject line that reads "My Ancestors" they just delete it. 2. If someone posts a message to the list that should not have been posted, please just delete it. Know that I am taking care of the problem. If you post your unhappiness, then you just continue on the problem. I know it is hard when your heart has been offended, but for my sake, and the sake of the list, please just delete it. Rootsweb has a wonderful Spam Detective and it stops most of it. You should see what comes across my screen. I have to look at each of them to make sure that what was stopped was truly Spam. Once in a while, one slips by though and if this happens, just delete it and go on with what we all love, genealogical research. 3. Please remember to delete the tags and un-needed words when you re-send a message to the list with your answer. If you don't check this, your responses can become quite large and may cause problems with some of our member's servers. This member who might not be able to receive your message because of its size, just might be your long lost second cousin with all the answers you are looking for. 4. The wonderful relationship that develops between list members is also one of a Mailing Lists Problems. I encourage you to respond to the entire list with genealogical responses, you never know who your response will help. In the same thought I would like to ask you to not respond to the entire list with personal responses. Such as, the first message from a member says "Happy Birthday Mary" and then Mary says "Thank you and then about 60 of our members also send "Happy Birthday Mary". This is what I mean by personal messages. Just keep in mind anything is ok to be posted as long as it has to do with the subject of the list. I know there are exceptions to most rules including this one. If you have a doubt ask me. [email protected] 5. Remember to keep your Virus protection up to date and never open any attached file unless you are 100% sure what it is and even then you are taking a chance. 6. Now the hardest thing is when one of our own, a fellow member becomes upset about a posting, something I have done or not done. It is so hard not to jump in and add our two cents. I want you to know how much I appreciate it when you just let these posting go by and delete them. Know that I am behind the scenes taking care of the problem. If you ever have a concern that I might have missed a message that needs addressed you are welcome to contact me during the day at [email protected] or in the evenings at [email protected] Please remember, so that this list is better for each of us, the posting of virus warnings, test messages, chain letters, political announcements, current events, items for sale, personal messages, flames, etc., in other words Spam is NOT ALLOWED and will be grounds for removal. Consideration for exceptions, contact me at [email protected] I want to thank each of you for your continued support of me and your willingness to help make this list the success it is. It is your list and is here for your benefit. If you have suggestions or comments you would like in future reports, you only need to send them to me. Kathleen Burnett List Mom [email protected]
Have had some new people to volunteer to do look-up. They are now listed on the Georgia Cemetery and Volunteer list wed site at http://freepages.genealogy.rootsweb.com/~gacemete/ If you have volunteered and your name is not on the list, then let us know and we will make sure that it is added. If you have a web site that is dedicated to cemeteries or has information about cemeteries, please let us know and we will add a link to your site. Also need some people to help us check for broken links. Several have been found in the last few days and we are trying to fix them or take them down. It is very frustrating to clink on a link that does not work. Thanks to all the great volunteers that are helping others find their roots. Doris

Good Afternoon to all my friends and relatives. I will be out of business for a period of time of which I do not know. My health has deteriorated to the point that I am no longer able to function properly. I am 99% bound to my home, my recliner, and my bed. For those that have requested info from me, and not have recieved a reply back, please resubmit your request to me and I will try very hard to get back to you. If not I will let you know. Most of you know what my health condition has been like in the past. For others that do not know me on a personal level as some do, problems are listed below: Bad Heart, Arthritis, Diabetes, Herniated Disks in back, damaged nerves from base of spine into legs and feet. I appreciate all the help over the last 10 yrs. God Bless to all of you! Bill Reeves
