Georgia's Death Index begins with the year 1919. There would be nothing to my knowledge giving the cause of a death which occurred in 1845 unless he were a notable person and his death warranted a mention in the local newspaper. I have seen Bible records which noted that so-and-so died on such-and-such date of this disease or that, but that's really very rare. Sorry I couldn't be of more help, Linda in Georgia Census/Cemetery Lookup Volunteer Genealogy is my ONLY business. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Bessie Pello" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Wednesday, July 31, 2002 7:12 AM Subject: [GA-CEM] John Mumford > Could someone look up death index please. Thanks for any help. D. J. Callaway

Although many of us understood the connection to college fraternities/sororities, the symbolism with cemeteries and graves is not as well known. Here is another site of interest: http://www.geocities.com/Heartland/Pointe/7336/tubeschristsymbols.htm BTW, with a little bit of sleuth work on the internet, I found someone in the "Theta Kappa Omega" fraternity and have sent him a note to see if he can provide some insight into the names for us. I'll say up front that I'm not knowledgeable of the Greek letters, or of other associated symbolism, but from what I understand, in the Greek alphabet Theta translates to "Th" and "Kappa" is "K" and "Omega" is either the "End" or "Eternity." Will follow up with a post from the Theta Kappa Omega member. . . if he sends me back anything. Hi Bob, Thanks bunches for the links but the first two were no help at all as in regards to burial markers. This last one gives generalizations on the symbols so I forwarded it along and hopefully it will be a little help. It was all greek to me and maybe I am just too sleepy because it did not make a lot of sense. Is anyone familiar with Reedy Creek Cemetery, located in Brooks County, Georgia? I'm doing research on that particular area for a documentary, and have been having a hard time locating information on that cemetery. Thanks
Have a question that I hope someone can answer. While doing a cemetery survey we ran across a marker in fairly rough shape but was able to make out some of the markings on it. Just under the name there was a set of three symbols "theta kappa omega" and then a space and another set of three symbols "phi nu phi" and then just under that were the dates. Can someone tell me please what these symbols designate? Thank you, Paula
