    3. Are you looking for ancestors in Northern Georgia, Northeast Alabama or Chattanooga, TN around 1886-87? Karla Jones has submitted a summary of the Journal of John Joseph Pledger Jeans Murphy, written in 1886-87 while serving as a Mormon missionary in the Southern Mission. 3. I just wanted to send a note to the list for anyone who is researching an ancestor that is recorded as being buried in "East Point Cemetery" in East Point, Fulton County or maybe even Campbell County, that somewhere in the 1920's the cemeteries name was changed to "Hillcrest Cemetery". This may aid in finding the grave site. For those searching for East Point Cemetery shift your search to "Hillcrest". 3. There is/was a Pauper's Cemetery in South Fulton County, on what is now Fulton Industrial Blvd. It is known now as the Bill Allison Cemetery, after the former Fulton County Chaplain. 40 years ago, it was called the Pauper's Cemetery. The graves are marked, but the cemetery is fenced, and I do not know if the markers have names and/or dates. This cemetery is located South of I-20, near the intersection of either New Hope or Cascade Rd, on the right heading South on Fulton Industrial Blvd. Jane [email protected] wrote: > > What about pauper burials/records, 1888, Oakland Cemetery, Atlanta, Ga.??? > [email protected] > > ==== GA-CEMETERIES Mailing List ==== > List problems? 3. Stephanie, Appling County was created in 1814- so I wonder about his place of birth. Later Ware County was created from a part of Appling. You may want to do some more research in Appling, Ware, and Coffee counties. Probably the only "proof" of birth would be a bible record or gravestone. Death records were not recorded officially in Georgia until 1919. Also, starting in 1850 the census listed state of birth. 1. [GA-CEM] Settle or Farley family cemetery in Lamar County
    2. I read your very interesting article about Lamar Griffin and his cemetery work in Putnam county. I am looking for the exact location (GNIS) of a cemetery I went to many years ago near Milner Georgia. I tried to find it with the GNIS locator page (http://geonames.usgs.gov/pls/gnis/web_query.gnis_web_query_form) but couldn't find it using Settle or Farley, Georgia, Lamar or Monore. Here is the information I have on it. John M Settle is my 2nd great grandfather Settle Family Cemetery, also called the Farely cemetery, on the Farley place, near Milner, Lamar Co GA; copied by the DAR; FHL film 0848575 item 2 I visited this cemetery myself, Feb 21 1980 It is on the Barneville-Jackson highway about 6 miles east of Milner GA, one mile east of Liberty Hill community at the fork of the Jackson & High Falls road division, on the north side of the road, out in a grove of trees surrounded by a farmer' crop. At that time, only Fannie Moreland Settle and John M Settle's grave markers found. At least 10 other unmarked graves there. They had cement mounds with mussell shells embedded into the cement, now all broken up by the honeysuckle vines. This information from the DAR survey: William Wood Settle b 27 Jan 1843 died 22 Feb 1876 in Butts Co GA his wife, Nancy Watkins Settle died 19 Jul 1937 in Butts Co GA These graves above ground and with a cement slab on top--Masonic symbol on this one: John M Settle born 4 Dec 1802 died 24 Apr 1855 Blessed are the dead who die in the Lord consort of John M Settle, Fannie Moreland died Jul 27 1879 aged about 80 years I also wondering if this is included on any survey of the county cemetery listings? Thanks very much, Pat Lowe Woodbury Minnesota

Here is the information that I have: I thought he was born in SC now it comes to light through this source that he was actually born in GA. He was born 28 Sep 1802 in Baxley, Appling County, GA. If anyone in these lists that I have emailed to has mor einformation, please contact me. I would love to know if there is a birth record out there for him. Also he was married in Ware County, GA to Rebecca Spivey. He died in 1907 in Douglas, Coffee County, GA. If anyone can help me in discovering if there is a death record or something like this for him, please help me. Also in the 1850 census Thomas and Rebecca are listed there with several children. I would appreciate any help from anyone who can help me in finding either a death record or birth record so we maybe can finally find out out who his actual parents were because as of now they are unknown. I do know he has a brother named George Hersey but it is believed that he lives in the North, possibly where he was born. Any help would be appreciated. Stephanie Grohol

    1. [GA-CEM] Larry Moore's Column on Putnam cemeteries for August 8
    2. Eileen B. McAdams
    3. This will be in the August 8 edition of The Eatonton Messenger Eileen The Historic Cemeteries of Putnam County You can find Putnam history in many old documents, buildings, artifacts and memories of citizens but few of these offer the stark physical evidence of cemeteries. How many cemeteries are there in Putnam County? Most people I asked gave an answer in the 25-50 range. A number in this range makes sense if you count the church and public cemeteries plus a few family plots. Actually the number is 157 that are known (the total is probably even higher but many old forgotten family cemeteries have been covered by foliage in the woods for years and are hard to find). The reason that the known number is so high (and growing) is because of the super sleuth of historic Putnam cemeteries, Lamar Griffin. Lamar estimates he has located 60-70 cemeteries previously thought lost. He searched old records and talked to residents with a long family history here about possible lost family plots. He purchased a GPS locator in order to precisely pinpoint gravesites and is currently plotting the! locations on a Putnam Map. One source of records was the Putnam County Probate Court and Lamar received substantial help from Judge Pat Howard s Chief Clerk, Pauline Carter, who has catalogued all the data. (The historic data available at the offices of the Probate Court is a story unto itself and will be covered in another column. They have demanding jobs there but always seem to have time to be friendly and helpful to family genealogists and others.) Graves include black, white, prominent, ordinary and down-on-their-luck citizens, all with their own history, as well as soldiers from the Revolutionary and Civil Wars and the World Wars of the twentieth century. Lamar became interested in Putnam s historic cemeteries 13 years ago when he began searching for his own family burial ground, which was a ten year journey itself. This hit home to me because after many years I finally found a great great grandfather s grave in an unrelated family s back yard in a heavily populated section of Gwinnett County, Georgia. Lamar s detective work, however, took him to remote, overgrown areas of Putnam where graves may have no identifying marker. I had the good fortune of traveling with Lamar to visit some historic cemeteries, a few of which had long been abandoned (many families died out or left Putnam years ago with family plots in time becoming forgotten). One abandoned site in the Rockville community contained the grave of the Revolutionary War veteran, John Hicks Bass (see photo in article to be published). The Bass Cemetery was also interesting in that it was contained by a two foot thick wall made from field stones, using no mortar, that w! ere so well crafted that you could not slide a piece of paper between most of the joints. Two other sites are known to contain Revolutionary War soldiers. As we visited other family sites (some with over 100 graves), Lamar related the history of the families, stating some proud moments and some not for publication. Lamar has an interesting laugh as he tells some of these stories--there is a place for humor at some historic cemeteries. About 100 of the 157 total cemeteries contain Confederate Veterans. A March 2, 1923 article in the Eatonton Messenger estimated that over 600 soldiers were furnished by Putnam to the Civil War effort and after reviewing today s records it appears that well over 300 are buried here. A series of articles appeared in the Messenger in 1923 encouraging descendants to locate, mark and decorate veterans graves. Lamar Griffin is a veteran himself having seen action in Sicily and Northern Africa during World War II. Putnam has so much unrecorded history (sometimes disjointed) but much of it could be captured with recorded interviews with many long time residents and some serious detective work. The good work of the Putnam-Eatonton Historical Society and the initiation of recording stories by the planners of the new visitors center (the Old School Story Project of the Museum Committee) are great starts but they need help from all of you to capture our unrecorded history. The Scenic Byway Committee needs people to help with historic preservation and display and will utilize some of Lamar s work. . We need a few more Lamar Griffins. Call me (485-1234) and I can put you in touch with people who will help make you life more interesting while you help today s and tomorrow s Putnam County and Oconee Valley.
