Hi all, I'm curious about several issues regarding cemeteries. More specifically, how didn't organizations handle burials. Basically, a local cemetery, that used to be city-owned, was given over to a cemetery organization that was created by the city. In fact, the cemetery was actually deeded to the organization. Over the years it became obvious that the quality of record keep left much to be desired. Lots were double sold, people buried in the wrong lot, and financial accounting was terrible. The City would periodically take back the cemetery because of all of the problems but eventually would give it back. Now, it appears that the City has it will keep it. I work for the City. Because of my history of cemetery surveys and knowledge of local history I became the default person handling these records. Problems I've run into: 3 sets of records of lot and plot ownership - no dates so I have no idea which one is most current. - deeds for plots not delivered. - deeds never executed. - deeds not filled out. - poor mapping of available lots. - poor financial record keeping. - funeral homes having too much control within the association; in fact, one funeral home director was on the board. This was a clear conflict of interest, but apparently he was allowed onto the board against City policy. He even bought lots from citizens just to mark them up and re-sell them at a profit. Luckily I had already surveyed this large cemetery (about 3,000 burials). The association didn't even have a list of known burials. Prior to the City taken them over, I had sent them a copy of the survey I did. They were grateful. What I have accomplished so far: - combined, within a database, all of the various lists of owners - created a list of probable unsold grave (just a guide for the short-term) - created files for those people who are having problems so that I can start finding solutions - money transactions are handled by one person - me - instead of half-a-dozen like the association was doing What I am wondering is how other cities deal with their "main" cemeteries. What kind of record keeping do they use? How much, on average, do they charge for lots? What type of restrictions do they have to keep people from buying up a bunch of lots only to sell them at a jacked-up rate? Do they use actual deeds for those who buy lots before they pass away? I'm sure I have more questions, but I just wanted to toss in a few to see if there is anyone who would be interested in sharing ideas, experiences, etc. Take care, Tara Fields The Crypt Free Genealogy and History of Camden and Charlton Counties, GA http://www.camdencounty.org Part of the American History & Genealogy Project http://www.ahgp.org/
Hi. Does anyone know the name of the large cemetery at the western edge of Tifton not far from Hwy 319 and I-75? My grandparents, Clarence A. Christian and Elberta L. Christian, are buried there, along with an infant daughter, Sarah Frances. Thank you. Lowell

Gerald, There's a William L. Hagin, born 23 Mar 1854, died 08 Jan 1926, buried in the New Fellowship Church Cemetery in Bulloch County. Could this be your William Lane? There is no other Hagin, Hagan, etc., buried in that cemetery. There's a Peter Cone Hagins listed in the Hagins-Miller Cemetery, born 11 Mar 1846, died 04 Nov 1917. Gerald, Neither William Lane Hagan nor Agnes Cone Hagan is buried at the Lanes Primitive Baptist Church Cemetery, according to Volume II of the Bulloch County Family and Church Cemetery series. I'll look in the indexes of the other volumes I have and report later. By the way, I checked Hagan, Hagin, Hagins, etc. Best, Lowell ----- Original Message ----- From: "Gerald Tuttle" <[email protected]> To: <[email protected]> Sent: Friday, August 09, 2002 9:58 PM Subject: [GA-CEM] Lanes church cemetery > Hi new to list hope this is wright . Hello Gerald, I checked my copy of"Bulloch County GA Genealogical Source Material" by Alvaretta Kenan Register and found the following marriages on page 229: 1. William L Hagins married Lilla Knight 7 Oct 1880, Book 4A page 49; 2. William L. Hagins married Agnes Cone 27 Sep 1883 Book 4A page 129. Revolutionary Soldiers Buried in Bulloch Co: 1. William Cone in the Cone Cemetery. (There's a paragraph here. If you'd like the entire paragraph, let me know.) Pge 434. Common School Fund page 391: Cone, Robert (1841); Cone, William, 12 Aug. 1827. There are other Cones and Hagans (various spellings in the book). The cemetery you mentioned is not included in the book. If you need additional help, let me know. --- Gerald Tuttle <[email protected]> wrote: > Hi new to list hope this is wright .
