Hello, if someone could help me with a brick wall, I would be most grateful: I have four ancestors that I need the death dates and the place of burial.... Samuel KELLUM age 57, and wife: Mary age 44 and their children are in the 1850 Census in Madison County, GA. together with William KELLUM age 21, and wife: Mary age 26, also in the 1850 Madison Co, Ga Census. they could be buried in Madison, Elbert or Hart counties. If someone has cemetery books or indexes for those counties, would you look up to see if they are there? or someone give me an idea on how to find this info...I will appreciate it. thanks for your effort....Gene/Bob in Greensboro, NC __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? In l988 I was charged $7.00 per copy for my husband's certificate--copies were to be sent to insurance SS and other points to get deeds, and other papers for probate--Just the way the world looks at things. I can only guess, that as the Sec. of State runs the GA Dept. of Archives and History, that this cemetery is a historical landmark and under her jurisdiction Wesley Gann [email protected] wrote: >Lincoln Cemetery in Atlanta has the records for Hollywood and Magnolia cemeteries in Atlanta. Hadn't heard of that one either, Joan, and I could use those surveys too. Perhaps we can still order copies of Mr. Franklin Garrett's work from the Atlanta History Center, if the folks for whom you need dates were there prior to ca 1935. Would be much cheaper too, if (like me), you need several searches. I'm sure they will let you on the base as long as it is not some high security base. Even then they will probably allow you to come on the base to visit the cemetery but you will have a baby-sitter with you. The military base in Hinesville (Fort Stewart) has several cemeteries contained within its boarders. I believe relatives are free to visit as they please. Steven Elkins Savannah, GA.
This all seems very interesting. I contacted a man earlier this year in regard to a family vault that is located on his property. The vault is quite unique in that it is constructed of tabby bricks. The vault is covered in vegetation and is in desperate need of repairs. Since I'm in the field of masonry restoration I thought I would see if he would mind me coming in and restoring the vault. Well, he stated that he did not want me to for fear of it attracting curious people once all of the vegetation was cleared. Of course the vault sits off the road quite a bit and this is what took me so long to find it. I find it very frustrating that people can be so selfish and let a valuable piece of history just disappear. Fortunately he has his water front property for sale which was once a plantation and hopefully the next owners will be willing to let me preserve this wonderful piece of history. Heck it's not even going to cost him a dime. Steven Elkins Savannah, GA.
Debbie, Post a query to the Wilkes County list. They should be able to assist you with a phone number. Ft. Benning will allow you to visit the cemeteries as long as you call first. My husbands family cemetery is located directly beside a practice range. There are times you would not want to visit. 36-72-1: The care accorded the remains of deceased persons reflects respect and regard for human dignity as well as cultural, spiritual, and religious values. The General Assembly declares that human remains and burial objects are not property to be owned by the person or entity which owns the land or water where the human remains and burial objects are interred or discovered, but human remains and burial objects are a part of the finite, irreplaceable, and nonrenewable cultural heritage of the people of Georgia which should be protected. 36-72-3: Counties, anywhere within the county boundaries, and municipalities, anywhere within the municipal boundaries, are authorized, jointly and severally, to preserve and protect any abandoned cemetery or any burial ground which the county or municipality determines has been abandoned or is not being maintained by the person who is legally responsible for its upkeep, whether or not that person is financially capable of doing so, to expend public money in connection therewith, to provide for reimbursement of such funds by billing any legally responsible person or levying upon any of his property as authorized by local ordinance, and to exercise the power of eminent domain to acquire any interest in land necessary for that purpose. Susan, That was interesting. Don't know how it applies here in AL, but wish I had known some years ago when we learned a large family plantation once in the family contained a family cemetery. Some of the ancestors were born in the late 1700s and buried on these early 1800 Blount Co., AL grounds. The new owners of the portion of the farm on which the cemetery stood, had had it plowed under, gravestones, too, except for one or two. They stood at a distance, leaning against a tree. It was then a pasture. We were afraid to enter the field, because of a couple of mean looking bulls. No one was at home when we knocked on the owner's door. We never went back. If I get an opportunity to go back, I will check our laws first and be more prepared. Thanks for the info. Betty in Birmingham
