Elaine; I don't think your message made it to the board....... Just a little history I've found surfing the net on the other cemeteries near Magnolia Cemetery, located in Northwest and SouthWest Atlanta, some on Hollywood Road; and a couple much further south... "excepts taken from Jewish Times.com" by Vivi Abrams http://atlanta.jewish.com/archives/2002/031502cs.htm The cemetery's past ...From a distance, the hills of graves on Hollywood Drive in Northwest Atlanta seem sliced in half. On the right, flowers and green grass caress measured gravestones. On the left, dead kudzu, thorns and weeds strangle the view of crumbling concrete and marble. ...About 60 Jewish graves dating from roughly 1890 to 1920 are nestled in the wooded section of Hollywood Cemetery off James Jackson Parkway, a rundown section of Atlanta blotted with incinerators and landfills. ...Hollywood Cemetery is on a list of cemeteries the committee would like to have cleaned, says Reisman. The group would also like to fix up several Jewish plots in Greenwood and at Roseland Cemetery, a rundown burial ground in South Atlanta that was devastated when the city built an off-ramp for I-75 through the Jewish section. How does a cemetery become a wasteland and just who is buried there? Franklin Garrett, the renowned Atlanta historian who died a few years ago, wrote about the formation of Hollywood Cemetery in "Atlanta and its Environs," published in 1954. "As the city expanded into the suburbs in order to provide space for the living, so also did it require additional space for the dead," Garrett wrote. "To partially fulfill this need Hollywood Cemetery was organized in 1890. . . . Today [it] lies in the valley through which run Hollywood Road and the River Car Line. It has spread across the hills bordering this valley, and provides a final resting place for thousands, including many pioneer residents of the Atlanta area." The entire article, written in 2002 - is rather fascinating..... Clarence; I have good news - and not so good news for you... I set out to find Magnolia Cemetery and found it without much problem. The cemetery is located in SouthWest Atlanta in a very distressed part of town and not too "inviting" for one searching alone in a shiny new car.... However; good news is I got lots of pictures! A white wooden sign identifies the cemetery with a phone number (404) 792-2220. There is not a paved road; only a winding road made from car-tracks, which was rather muddy with all the rain we've been having lately. I called the number and asked the nice gentleman to point out where your family in section "E" was. He directly me accordingly. I tried to find your ancestors while remaining inside the car as I was advised not to "wander" around the cemetery alone". So; I took pictures of section "E" that I'll send you. Perhaps, you can find out more by calling the cemetery care-takers - or I would be happy to call for you since it's a local call for me. Not to worry however; the nice man offered to meet with me another time if I would make an appointment. I'll try to get back there next week. Until then; I took 10 photos - several of which I'll post on FIND A GRAVE website (since none have been posted thus far). By the way - the address is Magnolia Cemetery, 1361 Hollywood Road, Atlanta, GA. All around this cemetery, up and down Hollywood Road are other much older cemeteries, many lining the hills, with grave markers jutting out of tall grass and trees...an enjoyable site. Anyone else wishing a copy of any of the photos - email me at <jff@mindspring.com> Again - sorry I didn't feel safe enough to wonder around looking about..... -----Original Message----- From: Clarence Mundt <clancynsusan@aaahawk.com> Sent: Aug 7, 2005 7:51 PM To: GA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GA-CEM] Magnolia Cemetery , Atlanta, Fulton, GA Hello list; In May 12, 1921, my grandfather Russell Louis PRESNELL bought a lot 28 M E. from Magnolia Cemetery Company, 1001 Empire or Atlanta Trust Co. Bldg, Atlanta, GA. On January 1, 1922 he paid it off, and the Warranty Deed 1195655 was files at 12:30 PM February 19, 1951 and recorded in book 2611 Folio 114 on February 22, 1951 in the Fulton county courthouse. Here is where the mystery I have begins: Russell Louis Presnell, born 18 July 1884, Stevenson, Jackson, AL and died 29 Oct 1926, Atlanta, Fulton, GA. I think he is buried in that lot 28E of Magnolia Cemetery. The deed date is 4 years before, but it was recorded 5 months before his wife died. His wife: Margaret Emma (Allen) Presnell, born 15 April 1879, Paint Rock, Jackson, AL and died 21 July 1951, Atlanta, Fulton, GA. She was buried 24 July 1951, Magnolia Cemetery, Atlanta, Fulton, GA. Is she buried with him? Of the 8 children, 3 also died in GA, and 2 in Atlanta, Fulton, GA. The other 5 are in various parts of CA and that is another search there. Mable Irene (Presnell) Long Born 23 April 1910, Paint Rock, Jackson, AL and died 4 February 1989, Atlanta, Fulton, GA. Her husband, William C. Long, a retied Army officer, may also be with her here. Harry Grady Presnell, born 3 June 1917, Atlanta, Fulton, GA and died in August 1976, Atlanta, Fulton, GA. His wife (unknown) may be with him. James "Alvie" Alvin Presnell, born 20 June 1912, Atlanta, Fulton, GA and died 14 August 1993, Morrow, Clayton, GA. His last wife (3) Frances R. may be with him. I have found on a map where the Magnolia Cemetery is located, but I am on the west coast. Magnolia Cemetery is in NW Atlanta - Marietta St. turns into Perry Blvd. Continue down Perry Blvd. until it dead-ends into Hollywood Rd. Take a left on Hollywood. About 1/2 mile on the right is where the cemetery is located. There is no listing of the names on the county site that I can find. I have searched the Yellow and White pages for the Magnolia Cemetery Company without any luck. Searching the USGenWep Project files only comes up with his brother Enoch and wife Mary Ann (Allen) buried in Roseland Cemetery, East Point, Fulton, GA. Is there anyone that can check the Magnolia cemetery an see how many of my kin folk are there? Thank you for any help you may offer. We began recording deaths in 1919, but I don't see one in GA for Russell. Here are some earlier Presnell deaths which occurred in Fulton County. Might come in handy if you find a close relationship in Hollywood Cemetery or in census records: Henry W. Presnell, died October 20, 1920, Fulton County - Certificate #28568-B Robert H. Presnell, died March 1, 1924, Fulton County - Certificate #7902-F John M. Presnell, died April 29, 1926, Fulton County - Certificate #9232-H Good luck, Linda in Marietta
From the Georgia State Archives: http://www.sos.state.ga.us/archives/what_do_we_have/vital_records/birth/default.htm Statewide registration of births began in 1919. These records are not available at the Georgia Archives. State law (O.C.G.A. 31-10-25) stipulates that birth records must be 100 years old before being transferred to the Georgia Archives. The first birth records will become available at the state archives in 2019. For birth records from 1919 to the present, researchers may contact the Georgia Department of Human Resources Vital Records Service 2600 Skyland Drive NE Atlanta, GA 30319-3643 Telephone: 404 679-4701 You may also request a birth record from the Vital Records Office in the county where the birth occurred. Hi Winnette, Do you know of a comparable site for similar listings for other states? I know every state is different in what they put on the web, priority of what is available, etc, but was wondering if you had leads to listings for other states? If anyone has access to Athens, Georgia cemeteries, would you please consider looking for the death of an Isadore Minder Thank you. C. Minder
I live in Midland, Ga. If I can help let me know. She was probably at the Striffler Hamby Funeral Home in Columbus. There are some local churches with cemeteries but she could have been buried in Columbus at Parkhill Cemetery. That was about the time my Granddaddy died. He was buried at Parkhill. In the 1950's Midland was in Harris County, I think. I am not sure but I don't think that area was annexed into Muscogee county until much later. Hope any of this helps, if you find the cemetery and would like a picture, just let me know. Jackie Hughey Smith
Hi... I am trying to figure out where the following people are buried in Lowndes Co, GA.... In the census, they were all living in the area of Clyatville, GA.... Georgia Annie Georger Taylor....died sometime before 1900.... William Taylor, died in 1917.... William Claude Taylor Burton V. Taylor Crancie (Crancy) Taylor These following people lived in Chatham and Lowndes Co, GA...and I am not sure when they died.... John Cornelius Geiger Anson Butler Georger Appreciate any help....thank you..... Stephanie Grohol
Joy, "Mollie" is a nickname for Mary, but usually Maryanne. Midland, Georgia, is located in Muscogee County. From the GA Death Index: Mary L. Sapp, white female, died July 23, 1956, at age 90, in Muscogee County, a resident of Muscogee; certificate #17054 Henry G. Sapp, white male, died October 27, 1972, at age 80, in Muscogee County, a resident of Muscogee; certificate #034343 Order a copy of your grandmother's death certificate. It should furnish the name of the cemetery where she is buried as well as the name of the funeral home who handled the burial. You should be able to obtain a copy of her obituary from either the local newspaper or from the funeral home. Good luck! Every GA counties has these maps for sale (at least, until supplies run out). HOWEVER, many local governments do not seem the know that they have these DOT maps! I go into the courthouse first and ask for the DOT or "Big White Map." Usually I get a blank look. I then ask for the tax accessors office or for an office that deals with land. Eventually I will find someone who knows about the maps (often times in a separate commissioners building or at a local DOT office). The maps are good but not perfect. Sometimes cemeteries are in the wrong place, mislabeled or completely left off (about 20% of Camden cemeteries were left off completely). I've never been to a county that charged more than $3.00 for the DOT map. Jefferson County charged a low $1.50 each. So when the PDF version won't do it for you, and you will be visiting the county in question, head to the courthouse first and be insistent. I always get 2 maps - one to mark up and one to keep clean. Thank Jon; I also tried looking at http://www.interment.net/Default.htm and no luck there eather. I guess I will have to set up another piggy bank for THAT darn courthouse in Atlanta to pay for some death certificates. I was hoping someone lived next door to it and could just take a look at the gravestone. Anyway, Thanks.. Clarence, Magnolia Cemetery is on FIND A GRAVE website and includes a map where the cemetery is located. There are 24 internments listed but none you've mentioned below - doesn't mean they are all listed; likely not. http://www.findagrave.com/cgi-bin/fg.cgi?page=cr&CRid=35137&CScn=magnolia+cemetery&CSst=12& Jon -----Original Message----- From: Clarence Mundt <clancynsusan@aaahawk.com> Sent: Aug 7, 2005 7:51 PM To: GA-CEMETERIES-L@rootsweb.com Subject: [GA-CEM] Magnolia Cemetery , Atlanta, Fulton, GA Hello list; In May 12, 1921, my grandfather Russell Louis PRESNELL bought a lot 28 M E. from Magnolia Cemetery Company, 1001 Empire or Atlanta Trust Co. All of these people died since Death Certificates were created. The death certificate should have the place of burial for each person. Or contact the funeral home that handled the burials.
