Well, the last missing link of the Thomas & Alma Furlong clan has arisen! Thomas & Alma had these children: Thomas Jr m Florence Hemmer Charles J m Betty Tylka[?] and then a Helen [?] Joseph m Clare Tinion & lived in Valley Stream Matthew [died @5 years old] John [Jackie died of TB 3 days after his mother died of cancer] Alma [my mother] m John Gebert James [only one still kicking and his health is getting fragile.] I have the Furlongs back to Newfoundland, and Pa Furlong's mother, Agnes Kavanagh Furlong, line is documented back to @1740 in NF. As far as Pa Furlong's sisters, I've recently been contacted by a member of the Elizabeth 'Lil' Rudiger line [Hmm, it's been awhile I'll have to write to her!] who has contacts with the Mary Ellen 'Nell' Feeley line, and I've been in contact with the Margaret Shea line who're still in Boston. As far as the Alma Kelly line, I've got so much stuff I haven't written up yet but we've got them back to the marriage of James H Kelly and Almira Dilks in Brooklyn in 1859. Got lots more to say but don't want to put stuff about the living on the open net. Hi Lisa I was very interested in your New York Furlongs and wondered if you have a Charles Edward Furlong amongst them. Depending on whwether you take his age from his death certificate (70) a 1870 Census for Vicksburg (26) or the 1900 New York City Census (53) he was born in 1837, 1844 (in New York) or 1847 (in New York). He is buried in the Green-Wood Cemetery, Brooklyn in 1908 having died on 25 Sept 1907. Not as horrific as it sounds as he was placed in a receiving tomb on 30 Sept 1907 and interred in Lot 32831 on 11 Aug 1908. I do not know the reason for this. He served in the Wisconsin 17th Volunteers in the Civil War, was Sheriff of Vicksburg, Mississippi before coming to New York in about 1875 where he spent the rest of his days in Room 357 of the Fifth Avenue Hotel. He was a member of Senator Thomas Platt's Amen Corner club which met at the hotel to discuss matters of politics. Somewhere along the line he became a General but NARA have no record of him as such. His cousin, Charles Furlong, was in the 6th New York Cavalry and was wounded at the battle of the Wilderness. This family seemed to have lived in New York state rather than the city. The towns of Waterford, Oswego and Watervliet are mentioned in publication that includes a brief biography. As a UK resident I hope that I have not confused state and county. My Furlong family seems to have originated in England (probably Devon) moved to Newcastlewest, Limerick, Ireland in the late 1600's from whence some members of later generation went to America and others to Pembrokeshire, South Wales. I would very much like to obtain the Probate Package for General Charles E. Furlong that I KNOW is at the NY Surrogate's Court, 31 Chambers Street, Newy. However when I telephoned them they said it would cost $70 just to look up the index then a further $5 per A4 sheet to photocopy. Although I am prepared to pay for it I thought this rather exhorbitant and they would not allow me to pay by Visa Card only by a cheque drawn on a American Bank. As a UK resident this is not possible. Bye for now Joy

I am hoping with this post that perhaps someone can help where my Furlongs may fit in.1781-Will of John Furlong, carpenter on the brig Defiance, will proved 1783, left everything t a widow named Mary Sealy of New York.1790-No New York Furlongs appear on the census.1800-Jesse Furlong/Orange Co./New York1810-Samuel Furlong/Dutchess Co./NY/has two males under ten yrs., 1 male 10-16, 1 male 16-26, 1 male 26-45, 2 females under 10, 1 female 10-16, 1 female 16-26 and 1 female 26-45. Presumably Samuel and his wife? are the eldest members of this household.Robert Furlong/Dutchess Co./NY/2 males under 10, 1 male 16-26, 2 females under 10 and 1 female 16-26.*I have a Samuel Furlong in my families burial plot in Brooklyn, burial in 1857. Origins of this Samuel are unaccounted for. Additionally, my gX3 grandfather James M.(Miner) Furlong was born in 1810 in New York, possibly(hopefully likely either Samuel o! r Robert is his father)1820-No Furlongs in the Tri-state area, although I believe there is a John Furlong in Galen New York.1830-In NYC-Mrs. M. Furlong/Ward 1, page 18/1 male 5-10 yrs., 1 male 10-15 yrs., 4 males 30-40 yrs, 1 female under 10, 1 female 10-15 and 1 female 30-40. Probably Mrs. M. Furlong herself is the female 30-40Also in 1830 in NYC:Mr. Furlong/Ward 13 page 363John Furlong/NYC/Ward 10 page 125John Furlong/NYC/Ward 6 page 463*I think the Mrs. M. Furlong is: Martha H. Furlong, b. approx. 1775 in New York, mother of a Robert Furlong who married Nancy Jane Park/1834 in Rye Westchester Co. She appears in the 1850 census with 'Jane Furlong' which is most likely a transcription error as Nancy Jane Park Furlong's children are all there with 'Jane' Furlong.1840Robert Furlong/Kings Co./2 ward page 394John Furlong/Kings Co./6th Ward, page 692William furlong/NYC/4th Ward, page 222Philip Furlong/NYC/9th Ward, page 28William Furlong/NYC/Ward 13, page 214*The above Robert! Furlong in 1840, not sure if he's the Robert that married a Rebecca(d. Mary) or if he's the Robert who married the aforementioned Nancy J. Park.1850I'll only list the Furlong's I've pursued in this census, which includes my gX3grandfather.James M. FURLONG(born 1810/New York) Ward 13, page 258(the AIS index has a transcription error and lists the ward as Ward 3). Included in his household were:Wife-Angeline Furlong/b. 1814Martha J. Furlong/b.1836Elizabeth Furlong/b.1840Mary A. Furlong/b.1843Robert Furlong/b. 1844, d. 3/8/1857Elijah Furlong/b.1847(deceased prior to 1857)Henry H. Furlong/b. Aug. 1849*Still alive in 1920*Other surnames in this household:Elijah Cash(Angeline Furlong's brother)b.1824/New YorkMary Cash(Elijah's wife)b.1829/IrelandElizabeth Cash/b.1798/New York/Angeline Furlong's motherReuben Cash/b.1836/New York/Angelines brotherWilton Cash/b.1824(Elijah's twin? maybe not)New YorkIsabella Cash/b. 1820/IrelandJames Cash/b.1845/New YorkSarah E. Cash/b.1849/New York! *also in this census is the 'Jane Furlong' who I believe is likely the Nancy Jane Park Furlong m. Robert Furlong. Her children were:Jesse Kennedy Furlong/b. 1835/New York/He became a lawyer, later lived in Brooklyn and died approx.1896. He married a Julia Faulkner/b.New York, daughter of George Faulkner and Ann Palen/NYC.John Park Furlong/son of Nancy and Robert married Mary Eerly in 1867 NYC.Nancy Furlong also had a daughter Ann, no idea what happened to her.*Now I have spent considerable time tracing each Furlong family as well as I can throughout the timeframe 1800-1860 and beyond for my own Furlongs. There has to be a link between Robert and Nancy Furlong(at least it would seem so) and my James Furlong. They would be at the right ages to be brothers and perhaps they're the sons of Robert Furlong of Dutchess Co. 1810, but the of course there's the conundrum of Samuel Furlong/Dutchess/1810. Why the Samuel in my families plot, and who is he?* Also have several unaccounted ! Furlongs who appear in census's with mine: an Eliza Furlong is with them in 1860, age 12 born New York, 1870 has an August Furlong living with the widowed Angeline Furlong in Brooklyn, age 15, apprenticed to a locksmith and born New York. Elizabeth Furlong(daughter of James and Angeline) b. 1840 is living with her parents in 1860 age 20, but apparently married and is listed under Elizabeth Moore. A couple of other strays that pop up with this family in 1860 are: James Barrett age 25, occupation stevedore, born New York and a James Sayres, age 5, born New York.By the 1860 census James and Angeline Furlong added a few more children(god did they never get tired?): John R. Furlong, b.1855/6(he became an actor presumably in NYC, thought I'd mention that in case anyone runs across him in that occupation)cannot find him anywhere in the 1870 census, he was not with his mother in Brooklyn at the time have no idea where he was living then. Also James M. Furlong, Jr., b.1853, and ! my gr.grandmother Martha Jane Furlong born 1858. I have all the information regarding the above folks spouses, children, etc. The Robert and Nancy Furlong branch I have done some research on re: the Park family, and Kennedy's as I think there is also a connection there via the Park's. Also have done some research regarding Jesse Kennedy Furlongs wife, Julia Faulkner. Additionally, have a bit of information regarding my own Furlong's up to 1945. I just need to establish a link with Furlong's in New York circa 1810.If any of this information rings a bell or anyone is researching one of these branches, please contact me.Regards,Lisa Kelley New York

Joe was born in 1857 in St. Johns Newfoundland the son of Thomas J Furlong a woman [of course]. I've not been able to pinpoint this further. I'm sure he had siblings and he married in St Johns in 1891 and had several children there before emigrating to Boston in 1887. The Mass Archives doesn't seem to have a death record and the cemetery doesn't have any more information. Of course, there's no headstone on the plot!
