    3. Frank, I've been a member of this list for years now, and have always respected you and enjoyed reading your notes...until now. Genealogy is only a part time interest for me, as I have a tremendously demanding job, busy family life, and numerous hobbies. I have probably made use of some of the data you've shared because I trust you as a source. The only way I use it is in my family tree on my personal computer. It goes no further. I've pulled data from many, many sources and I realize that there are inconsistencies, and sometimes the data is just obviously wrong. When data is wrong, I just leave it out. I have a wonderful value system, but you must understand, that this is just a hobby for me and not my life. Until I read your note (and some of the others) today, I had no idea what an ignorant, blood-sucking, family-tree stealing, leech I've been, genealogically speaking. I've done my own research on most of my tree within the last two hundred years, but don't really have the skills or time to figure it out before that. I apologize for any data I've taken from you and others. I clearly don't deserve it. You probably shouldn't even publish it with people like me out there. I realize that you're talking about people who are publishing your work without crediting you, but the note went out to me, as well, and it's offensive. I'm sending you this note personally because I don't think the list server is the proper place to air grievances like this. Your attitude makes me feel like leaving the list, but I'm still interested in the Fuqua family, being a direct descendant myself. In fact, I belong to a branch that is not well documented on the web and I have many of the missing links, which I've carefully researched myself and still work on occassionally. So I think I'll stay. You're entitled to your opinion, as I'm entitled to mine. Thank you for listening. Sue (Fuqua) Phelan My line (with which you will probably find fault): Guillaume Fouquet> William Humphrey Fouquet> Moses F. Classification: Query Message Board URL: http://boards.ancestry.com/mbexec/msg/rw/wYX.2ACEB/816.1 Message Board Post: Jan, It is so refreshing to hear another voice in the wilderness! I have abandoned the soap box from which I used to preach the need for RESEARCH and SOURCE QUOTATIONS. It became apparent to me that most people have no interest in, and do not enjoy, the genealogical processes. They are content to collect dates and names from other people's work (?) and use them as if they were automatically true (even if they don't make sense). If you want another exercise in amusement/frustration, try contacting all of the people who have Guillaume Fouquets "ancestors" listed back for several generations. They not only cannot provide any sources other than listings they found on the Internet, they cannot justify why they think the old man's name was Guillaume Fouquet (other than the fact that it was listed thus in the Fuqua book). I have even had someone on this list copy a large portion of my web page, and present it on their own site as if it were their own. Considering the hours I spent building the site, my first reaction was one of anger. Upon further reflection, I realized that the individual involved has a whole different value system than mine, and making an issue of it would be a waste of time. Maybe I should find my soap box and spend some more time on it. I doubt if anything would change, but I might feel better. 3. Sue: All right, that's the kind of spirit, zest and sarcasm I have in my branch of the Fuqua family. Don't take crap from anyone and speak out if you feel the need. As for my research, I received a lot of valuable information from Frank and appreciate it; that's when I was just starting out. But that information, along with items I've taken off various Web sites, goes into a separate computer file as unconfirmed or conflicts with other information. Then I can go from there, and it can be difficult to confirm something if you don't have the time or knowledge in regards to the process. But I understand what you're saying. I have a full-time job raising a kid on my own who is into everything from Cub Scouts to soccer, so the hobby usually sits on the back burner. I have no plans to publish my research online, I've been doing this work for my own enjoyment and plan to put it all together in a booklet for my immediate family someday. I'm going beyond just dates and place names, I've also been doing research on the histories of particular areas where my ancestors lived ‹ Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Iowa and Nebraska ‹ trying to understand what it was like in those days and how those people may have lived. Your e-mail/letter sounded just like my sister; it struck me as if it were a genealogical trait, therefore, I felt compelled to write. I hope the experience does not turn you off to a wonderful hobby.
