Does anyone here research the Fuqua in Hopkins County KY? They also lived in Ohio County KY. I am trying to find parents for my Joseph Allen Fuqua he was b. in Hopkins Co. KY in the 1860s. I think I found his parents although need more info to prove that a Susan Potts and T. AL Fuqua are his parents. These were living in Hopkins County KY in 1880 (going by memory here). Had a son Jesse and one Joseph. Is anyone out there familiar with this family? My Joseph Allen Fuqua died in 1929 and he is buried in Ohio County, no marker. No obit, nor death record have been found; I have looked for the death record continuously in the death index both online and the microfiche. Brenda Sears
All this discussion about Ralph Fuqua and Priscilla Owen had me thinking that somewhere I had notes on this Thomas Owen. I dug them up today and they are as follows: "Historical Sketches of the Campbell, Pilcher and Kindred Families" by Margaret C. Pilcher, Nashville 1911. Chapter on the Owen Family, p. 318..."in the fourth quarter of the seventeenth century, William Penn, the Chiefest of the Quakers, had already projected his plans of a government founded on brotherly love, and from him a large number of Welch Quakers, let by Rowland Ellis, purchased five thousand acres of land in Pennsylvania. They arrived in America in 1682, another colony coming in 1686. There were also a number of Owens of these colonists, amont them being three brothers from Wales. Thomas, John and William Owen, who arrived in the Colony of Virginia about the same time and settles in Henrico, twenty miles below where Richmond now stands. It is not know whether they were related to the Owens whe settles in Pennsylvania or not. The original will of Thomas Owen is recorded in Henrico County, Virginia, dated 1741 and probated in 1744; but the earliest mention of the family is in the will of Thomas Brookes, as recorded in Henrico County, dated 1694, probated in 1695. In it he names wife Joanna, and two sons-in-law, Thomas and William Owen. Thomas Owen married Elizabeth Brookes, and William Owen married another daughter of Thomas Brookes. It is supposed that John Owen, the second brother, did not marry, as we have no record of his family. It is thought that he went to South Carolina or Georgia. He was lost sight of by his brothers and their families, who remained for some years in Virginia. We have no record of the family of William Owen, the third brother, who married a Miss Brookes. Thomas Owen is the first of the family on record in Virginia. He and is wife Elizabeth Brookes, lived in Henrico County and reared a family. There are no details preserved concerning either of them, but is may be safe to state that the life and character and habits of this couple must have been good, for the character of their children and the families into which they married, is sufficient to indicate their high position in life. They lived and died in the above-named county. Thomas mentions his wife, Elizabeth Brookes, in his will. Their son, John Owen with wife Mildred Grant (daughter of Thomas Grant and Isabella Richardson) his father-in-law Thomas Grant and his brothers -in-law William Allen and Daniel Grant, removed to Granville Co., N.C. in 1765. p. 319...As we have no record of the descendants of John and William Owen, we will being with Thomas Owen, who married Elizabeth Brookes of Henrico County, Virginia. They had four children. We suppose all were born in Henrico County Virginia. They were John, Thomas, William and Mary." --------------------------- Nowhere in this article on Thomas Owen and Elizabeth Brookes is there the mention of a daughter Priscilla. Can anyone give me the source that attaches Priscilla to Thomas and Elizabeth (Brookes) Owen? Thank you Pat C. Johns in Va.
Why did Ralph move from Charles City Co. VA to Bedford, VA? Where was Ralph's (1717-1770) property located in Bedford, VA? Where was the mansion and plantation of Thomas (1736-1806) as mentioned in his will located in Bedford, VA? I saw reference to many families moving from Bedford during the "Panic of 1809". Does anyone know what this is referring to. Patty
I finished reading my e-mails after writing the above and my how busy the Fuqua site has been since I took a little trip up into the Shenandoah Valley. I made a copy of Ralph's original will so will go ahead and include it now. I have several things I never had time to look for while there and would help with those. Another information sheet says Ralph Fuqua wrote his will on November 6, 1765. He died in 1770; his will was probated July 24, 1770, Bedford County. I just spent two days in the Bedford, VA genealogy library and courthouse and have Fuqua questions to post after having time to go over the many copies I made while there. I find the primary sources to be such treasures. Even though I had seen several wills printed in the Fuqua book and online I was ecstatic to find the original hand written copies of wills and deeds. While I treasure the primary sources I am truly amazed at how many undocumented fascinating connections fit into the giant puzzle. For instance my great uncle was named Gilliam Fuqua. The "original"" Guillaume was his four times great grandfather. I can't prove he was named for his four times great grandfather but it seems probable as Gilliam was not a very common name and of course the spellings could have easily changed. Thanks to so many of you who have done thorough research and shared it. While I still want to locate things myself the leads online are marvelous. Patty
Dear Ron Thank you so much for the information. I will study this. Jan Janice E. Morgan This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down his life for us 1 John 3: 16
When Thomas Owen (supposed father of Priscilla Owen Fuqua) wrote his will in 1741 in Henrico County VA., he gave a negro girl to Ralph Fuqua and Priscilla his wife, for life, and then to their son John if he lives to 21. If he dies, then to Elizabeth Fuqua, daughter of said Ralph and Priscilla. I think we can assume from this that John Fuqua was not 21 years old in 1741, and apparently neither was his sister, Elizabeth. If Ralph and Priscilla had children over the age of 21, would Thomas Owen have named them in his will? Jan --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Jan, Thank you for your quick response. I will drive down to Beford Tuesday and see what I can find out. I do know that the museum has a huge file on Fuqua and I am sure they have a copy of Ralph's will, if they don't I will go to the courthouse. I know that they have a copy of the Fuqua book written by Alya Irwin, I will check that also. Since this was not one of my main lines, I didn't do a lot of research on the Fuqua's I was mainly concentrating on my Corbitt line. I haven't done any research on any of my lines in over a year because of the failing health of my mother. Pat

Is anyone out there descended from Susan Steele and Tommy Fuqua of Nashville, born early 1800's? I have lots of info on Susan's family. Mildred B. Venitucci
Fran, Where do you live? If you are not in or near the Bedford area, I will make a trip to Bedford and get a copy of Ralph's will and transcribe it and post it. I will also visit the Bedford Museum and see what data is there on his daughter Ann. Pat
Jan, I believe that Jonathan Richardson, s/o John and Susannah, did remain in Bedford, or returned to there for a time, However, be careful, as there was another Jonathan Richardson of Bedford, who may or may not be related to this family. Beginning 1774, this Jonathan Richardson began acquiring several parcels on and around Gill's Creek, and nearby Long Branch (a branch of Goose Creek) that all together totaled over 1,000 ac. I believe this may have been Col. Jonathan Richardson, Rev. War officer of Bedford Co. Militia. Whether or not he was the son of John & Susannah I do not know. Another Jno. Richardson was in Blount Co., TN by 1801, with 200 ac on the tax roll. Since the elder John d. 1795, this must have been a son, grandson or nephew. I think you are right about a 1st marriage for Ralph Fuqua, or that he married Pricilla much earlier than what I have seen out there. In my own data, I have his children Martha, Ann, Susannah and Ralph all b. before the date that most assign to his marriage to Pricilla Owen, Susannah because of her established marriage to John Richardson before they sold the Louisa Co lands. However, even though I have requested specific references and documentation from several of those who have posted information on this couple, I have yet to have anyone reply. Ron I have assembled the following "Likely Descendency" chart for William / Guilliam Fuqua from many different online sources, EMails, and what I know for certain as a result of personal courthouse record searches, tax rolls, etc. As you see, my Goodman lines connect with two of his sons, William and Ralph. Ron, Thank you ! I have read much of the Coombs and Goodman Family's research and have gotten many clues to further mine from it and, for that, I'm grateful. I am familiar with the information you provided on John and Suzannah Richardson and their move to Greene County, TN. Some of our Family moved to that part of Tennessee, also. In fact it is through this research that led me to the Fuqua Family. My ancestors witnessed the Will of Johnathan Richardson in Bedford County, VA. (Witnesses were: John Proudford, Joshua and Ann Morgan. At this point we have no idea what Ann's Maiden name was. I am investigating the possibility it is Fuqua. Ralph had a daughter named Ann. There is very little out there on her. I think there must be an earlier marriage for Ralph or the marriage date for Ralph and Priscilla is wrong. All the children attributed to him are hard to work in a marriage beginning at Priscilla's age of 32. Jan
Re: Susannah Fuqua, wife of John Richardson, as mentioned as dau. of Ralph Fuqua in his will. (Will of Ralph Fugua, Bedford Co, Va. Dated 6 Nov 1765 and proved 7/24/1770). 26 Feb 1748 John Richardson sold 60 ac & plantation in Louisa Co., VA to John Haggard, Wit. Thos. Lipscomb, James Howard, Benj. Dumas. Deed also signed by wife, Susanna (Fuqua) Richardson. Louisa Co. (Louisa Co. Deed Book A). From this deed, it appears that Susanna Fuqua would have been born ca. 1728, not 1750 as some seem to have surmised from Ralph Fuqua's will. John Richardson died, 1795 in Greene, TN Co. (Will entered, Greene Co. TN Ct. Minutes No #/391). Wife Susanna Richardson, executrix. Names sons Jonathan, Obediah (m. Sarah Jane Goodman), Joseph (m. Susanna Goodman), Jesse, Fuquay (Fuqua), daughters Elizabeth, Mary, Siller (Pricilla?). Therefore, Susanna Richardson b. ca 1728, wife of John Richardson, d. after 1795, is presumed by this researcher to be same as dau. of Ralph Fuqua. Does this seem to be pretty solid? Anyone have proof to the contrary? Ron Goodman
Jan, I have not seen the will of Ralph, but if you would like to request a copy, it can be found in Will Book 1 p. 96. I have seen references to several of the daughters named in the will; however, I haven't reviewed the actual will. And, I disagree with you that women do not have children at age 55. My grandmother had a child when she was 56, she always called her a change of life child. Pat
Dear Pat, My point is, Women do not have children at age 55. I think there may be an explanation to all this that isn't evident at this time. I notice in my research that multiple births tend to run in the Fuqua Family so that might account for the number of children but fewer pregnancies. One submitter indicated as much, even questioned the fact that they had four children born the same year. No sources given. I haven't yet found a source of names for these children. Were they named in Ralph's Will? This is very important to me for I need information on daughter, Ann, who my sources indicate, was born in Goochland County and may very well have been the eldest child. Does anyone have information on this Ann (different spelling). There is another Anne Fuqua about the same time period born in Bedford County, VA but she is the daughter of one of Ralph's brothers or nephews. The two are mixed up often. I would appreciate any information. The recent "so called controversy" on this site is very discouraging to we who read the posts to gain informative information. Unfortunately what I have just read seems, to say the least, petty and not worthy of comment. This is the first time I have written to this site since I was "reamed out" for asking a question similar to the present subject under discussion. Being 'put down' in print is not kind, thoughtful nor encouraging and I believe should be avoided.. I do believe this site should be elevated to a higher standard. I, too, am a direct descendent of Fouquet/Fuqua. Faye Fuqua Davis
Granted, I have not recently researched this line, however, my notes on the children of Ralph and Priscilla don't seem to jive with the previous list posted. I show the following: John Fuqua, b. 17 April 1735 ; Elizabeth Fuqua abt 1737; Mary Fuqua abt 1739; William Fuqua abt 1741; Susannah Fuqua abt 1743; Thomas Fuqua abt 1745; Henry Fuqua abt 1747; Isham Fuqua abt 1749; Ralph Fuqua Jr. abt 1751; Joseph Fuqua b. 4 May 1756 d. 1829, m. 13 Nov 1782 Celia Bondurant; Anne Fuqua b. abt 1757. I have the last child being born around 1757 which would mean that Priscilla would have been between 43 - 55 years old. I show she was born between 1702 - 1714 I show that Ralph died 14 July 1770 will probated 24 July 1770 (per the Bedford County Virginia Index to Wills 1754-1830 published originally by Heritage Papers, Danielsville, Ga ) which would mean, that the Martha listed as a child of Ralph and Priscilla would have been born 13 years after her father's death.
