Claire I believe that those children must be the descendants of Giles Fewquay of Charles City Co. VA.The time frame is right and of course the location fits. Also, one of Gile's daughters, Hannah, married a William Rock (Rook) and I notice that a William Rock was also a witness to the will. Giles's son, Giles had a son Henry of the right age...but Caleb is the big mystery. Jan --------------------------------- Do you Yahoo!? The New Yahoo! Search - Faster. Easier. Bingo.
Claire, I may just be a misreading of the entry. Some of the old handwriting is hard to distinguish especially the "S", and "J". If your records indicate that she married Joseph M., then it must be a "J" instead of "S". Thank you for clarifying that, I will make a change to my notes. Pat C. Johns in VA

I tried to incorporate all of it into my FUQUA data base. I do, however, have a question regarding: VGQS..Series XIV Vol 2, Maysville Church, Buckingham County: p. 37...Rebecca Lipscomb, (entry date August 22, 1828) married to S. M. Fuqua November 10, 1849, dismissed to Tennessee. I have in my notes the following: >From Southern Religious Telegraph Richmond, Henrico Co, VA, Jan 9, 1830 Marriages At Maysville, Buckingham Co on the 19th ult. by the Rev Jesse S ARMISTEAD, Mr Jos M FUQUA, of Cumberland, to Miss Rebecca, daughter of Hezekiah LIPSCOMBE, Esq;..... Am I understanding that Rebecca LIPSCOMBE entered the church on Aug 22, 1828 and left to go to TN on Nov 10, 1849? Do you suppose that the S.M FUQUA is just a typo? I was confused at first as I thought the Jan 9, 1830 date was a marriage date, but I now think that I was mistaken. Can you verify? Claire Fuqua

Good morning list... I was out of town this week for a funeral and picked up a Peoria, IL newspaper to get a copy of the obit for my files. I was just sitting here clipping the obit and was ready to throw the rest of the paper away when the Fuqua name jumped out at me. There is an article (on page C1 in Monday, April 28, 2003) about the Peoria Reads program for the school children, and it talks about a book "The Reappearance of Sam Webber" by Jonathon Scott Fuqua. This is what the article says: The book tells the story of 11 year old Sam Webber whose father disappears leaving Sam and his mother to cope with poverty on their own. Forced to leave their middle class home to move into a poorer neighborhood, Sam is bullied at his new school and falls into a troubling depression. A black custodian at Sam's new school named Greely befriends the white youngster, and the book centers on their relationship. The students who read the book wrote essays and drew posters as part of a contest, and the winers got to meet author Jonathon Fuqua in person. I was curious as to what line author Jonathon Scott Fuqua fit into? I looked into him a little more since Peoria is only about 100 miles from me & found that he was born in Germany & now lives in Baltimore, MD., but that he had moved 11 times by age 14, once living in Virginia. (http://www.peoriareads.org/author.html). Here are some other sites for him: http://www.jonathonscottfuqua.com/about_jonathon/ http://www.bancroftpress.com/media_webber2.html If anyone can claim this family member, please let me know which line it is. Thanks, Jan

(I did submit a post a long time ago.) She is the only Fuqua in my line at this point—I’m sure that there must be others J if only I could get farther back in time. Not knowing her parents’ names nor her birthdate makes this ancestor particularly hard to trace. My mother's grandmother was Clarissa 'Clara' Fuqua. According to the 1895 (Richardson Co.) NE census, she was born about 1856 in MO. She married Louis E. Wonderly/Wunderlich, who was born in St. Louis, MO, before 1875. He was about 18 years her senior. My mother, Mary Jane [Cooper] Redenbaugh, tried without success to find records of her in Falls City, NE where they had lived. She went to the church there and was told that the records had burned. Clarissa’s youngest daughter was Bessie Elizabeth Wonderly. She married Ezra Silas Cooper, and they were my mother’s parents. Does anyone know who Clarissa’s parents were? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Eloise
My Fuqua line follows. All information, except for some of the exact birth, death and marriage dates, is from family records. My 3rd great grandfather was Joseph Fuqua. He was born January 1, 1779 in Bedford Co., Virginia, and died June 16, 1831 in Henderson Grove, Knox Co., Illinois. He married Martha Reynolds July 30, 1802 in Bedford County, Virginia, daughter of Jesse Reynolds and Mary Bright. She was born about 1785 in Bedford County, Virginia, and died June 1856 in Hendersonville, Knox County, Illinois. John and Martha moved from Virginia to Hart County, Kentucky in about 1817, and relocated to Knox County, Illinois in about 1829. My 2nd great grandfather was Jesse Fuqua, third born of thirteen or fourteen children of Joseph and Martha. He was born about 1805 in Bedford County, Virginia, and died after 1886 in Munfordville, Hart Co. Kentucky. In 1826 he married Elizabeth Dawson in Hart County, Kentucky, daughter of Thomas Dawson and Nancy Fitzhugh. She was born about 1813 in Logan County., Kentucky, and died about 1840 in Hart County, Kentucky. After the death of Elizabeth, Jesse married twice again. Various researchers have reported he married Rebecca Terry or Perry and later Bicy A. Jaggers Bostick. Jesse spent most of his life in Hart County, Kentucky, but lived for a while in Elk County, Kansas. According to family legend, Jesse could speak French. Jesse Fuqua and Elizabeth Dawson probably had a total of seven children, but our family bible only lists the following: 1. MARTHA E. FUQUA, b. December 2, 1827, , Logan Co., KY; d. June 9, 1887, Walla Walla Co., WA. 2. NANCY FUQUA, b. December 2, 1827; d. July 26, 1910, Elk Co., KS. 3. THOMAS D. FUQUA, b. August 1, 1833, Hart Co., KY; d. September 20, 1906, Munfordville, Hart Co., KY. 4. ROBERT DANIEL FUQUA, b. September 4, 1835, Baxter, KY; d. March 10, 1909, Orting, Pierce Co., WA. 5. CHARLES BRIGHT FUQUA, b. September 17, 1837, Munfordville, Hart Co., KY; d. October 2, 1923, Seiling, Dewey Co., OK. My great grandfather was Charles Bright Fuqua, not to be confused with Charles Bright Fuqua (son of Joseph Fuqua), an uncle to this Charles Bright. He was born September 17, 1837 in Munfordville, Hart County, Kentucky, and died October 2, 1923 in Seiling, Dewey County, Oklahoma. He married Nancy Adeline Weeks June 26, 1870 in Greenwood County, Kansas, daughter of Edwin Weeks and Catherine Amrine. She was born June 20, 1843 in Belmont County, Ohio, and died July 20, 1907 in Seiling, Dewey County, Oklahoma. The following was copied from the obituary of Charles Bright Fuqua (b: 1837): Charles. Bright Fuqua as born Sept. 17, 1837, in Hart Co., KY. Died Oct 2, 1923, age 86 years and 15 days. When a mere boy he moved to Iowa, and from there during the gold excitement in California he crossed the plains with his sister and family. Dec. 3, 1864 he enlisted in the Union army at Fort Yamhill, Oregon, in Co. A., 1st regiment of Oregon Volunteers, and was discharged June 30. 1866. After the war he returned to Kentucky and from there went to Elk County, Kansas where he married Nancy Adeline Weeks. To this union were born two girls and five boys, only three of whom survive him. About twenty-seven years ago he moved to Kingfisher, Oklahoma Territory, and from there to Seiling, Oklahoma Territory, about eighteen years ago where he lived until his death. Children of Charles Bright Fuqua and Nancy Adeline Weeks were: 1. ROSA OLIVE FUQUA, b. March 19, 1871; d. July 27, 1889. 2. ALCANDER DRISCO FUQUA, b. July 15, 1872, , Howard Co., KS; d. September 10, 1963, Seiling, Dewey Co., OK. 3. JESSE EDWIN FUQUA, b. February 5, 1874; d. October 25, 1878. 4. CHARLES THOMAS FUQUA, b. July 24, 1875; d. 1962. 5. MARTHA ADELINE FUQUA, b. July 20, 1877, Grenola, Elk Co., KS; d. December 31, 1969, Mooreland, Woodward Co., OK. 6. ROBERT FRANKLIN FUQUA, b. July 25, 1879, Grenola, Elk Co., KS; d. 1913. 7. WILLIAM LINCOLN FUQUA, b. October 7, 1881; d. June 8, 1882. My grandmother was Martha Adeline Fuqua. She was born July 20, 1877 in Grenola, Elk Co., Kansas, and died December 31, 1969 in Mooreland, Woodward County, Oklahoma. She married Charles Clarence Stewart December 24, 1899 in Kingfisher County, Oklahoma Territory, son of Charles A. Stewart and Eliza A. Davis. He was born June 2, 1873 in Bloomington, Franklin County, Nebraska and died January 9, 1942 in Vici, Dewey County, Oklahoma. Regards to all: Charles C. Stewart chascstewart@msn.com

VGSQ, Series XXXV, Vol 3: p. 191...The Ten Thousand Name Petition...This information was transcribed by Jean Pickett Hall and printed in the Va. Genealogical Society Quarterly: "The final petition regarding religious "toleration" or freedom presented to the House of Burgesses by the Baptists was read on 13 June 1775." A Petition of sundry Persons of the Community of Christians, called Baptists, and other Protestant dissenters, whose names are thereunto subscribed, was presented to the House, and read; setting forth, that the Toleration proposed by the Bill, ordered at a former Session of General Assembly to be printed and Published, not admitting public Worship, except in the day time, is inconsistent with the laws of England, as well as with the practice and usage of the primitive Churches, and even of the English Church itself; that the night Season may sometimes be better spared by the Petitioners from the necessary duties of their callings; and that they wish for no indulgencies which may disturb the peace of the Government; and therefore praying the House to take their cast into consideration, and to grant them suitable redress. How exciting to see all the different lines - it will be amazing someday to see them intersect. Yes, Pat, I have noticed that my family tree has some crossing branches too. In fact, it is a little scary to see how virtually all my family lines - on both sides! - seem to dump right back into the same little area of Virginia in the early 1700s. Certainly gives one pause for thought, doesn't it? Anyway, as promised, here is my meager little offering: my maternal grandmother was Cola Bey Fuqua, b. 19 Apr 1895 Geneva Co., AL m. 25 Jun 1911 to Morris Lee and d. 1 Aug 1958 in Orlando, FL Her parents were William M. Fuqua (b. 2 Feb. 1860, Barbour Cty., AL m. 27 Jan 1881 to Lydia Margrette Benefield and d. 5 Nov. 1932 in Florala, AL William's parents were Randolph "Randall" Fuqua b. Mar 2, 1814 and d. June 3, 1896. and Mary Hartzogg Fuqua b. June 5, 1831 and d. Oct 27, 1919 Randall, however seems to not have been born TO anyone. He, rather, seems to have sprung up from thin air. Wisps of smoke have been spotted in the Florida and Alabama area, but no solid fires of proof that I am aware of. Would love to be proved wrong on that one. William and Lydia had a houseful of children, including Cola Bey, Allace Luida, Pearlie, Lilie Leolie, Ethel Befay, Lois Nila, Lola Amazone, Willie Mae, and Laudie William. If anyone is descended from this group I do have some pictures of William and Lydia - and of the whole family in front of their house. Also have newspaper clippings, and some assorted sundry things of interest to the immediate line only. Let me know if anyone would like copies. Thanks so much! Cara
Hi, I too must say I am a lurker out on the Fuqua link. I am sorry for lurking. I wanted to start back up with my family history, my parents have done so much research, but I have found it hard to find time to start. Thanks, Frank, for posting links that help in our research. The Kentucky Cemetery one was great and was the other. I am trying to just research our own line but keep getting off on others....I have been hoping to start posting some of the material I have gathered over the years in the hope that it will help others..have so many different lines going I keep getting off track though. One thing I have noticed, it is difficult to identify some queries because there is no date or place shown. Also, when replying to a query it is helpful for we "lurkers" if we know who posted the original query - just to come on with a reply with no i.d is difficult to follow. I usually just delete the whole thing - (wrong thing to do, I know) Anyway, keep up the good work - you and Claire have been at it for a long, long time and your work is appreciated! I have heard, both on the list and privately, from long time subscribers who posted their queries and got their answers (or not) quite some time ago. They are now just observing, hoping that sooner or later something will be posted that will interest them. I also observe, because I can see when people subscribe and unsubscribe, that most new subscribers just watch the list to see if anything of interest passes by. Frequently, they stay a while and then unsubscribe because nothing has happened that benefits them. Consider this..... There are MANY subscribers who have joined since the old timers posted their queries. Those subscribers haven't seen the queries. They may have answers, but one will never know because they haven't seen the questions. Consider this too....... The new subscribers may have questions which can be answered by the old timers, but one will never know because they haven't posted their questions. The primary purpose of the List is to exchange information. How can this happen if the primary activity is "watching?" I promise not to beat this horse any more. Frank
Frank, I too am a silent member. I cannot connect my William Fuqua to any on this list but I stay on and print off things that may someday lead me to a connection.
