    3. Reference: Note from Tom Fulton <Pfulton39@aol.com> regarding Subject: Wales Fultons????? dated: Thu, 8 Jul 1999 22:30:32 > Roberta, I always enjoy reading your postings and wondered if you ever came > across any Fulton line from Wales. I visited your daughters website and being a retired NY State trooper I > was very moved by it. Dear Tom, I agree that my daughter Elisa's home page touches the heart. I am glad that you enjoyed it. It has been two years since her first "true love" was killed in the line of duty at age 22 and the emotional healing process continues. Regarding your Wales ancestors, I assume that you do not know your GGF David Fulton's parent's names. Is that true ? Where did David live in PA, how old was he at that time, and do you have any birth and death information on him ? Do you know his wife's name (the one born in Wales) ? I am not sure if I understand the information you provided. Is the following correct ? 1 gggf Fulton b in Wales + gggm b in Wales 2 David Fulton b in PA, your ggf + ggm born in Wales 3 Catherine Fulton b in Wales I went to the LDS online database at: http://www.familysearch.org/ I selected Custom Search (so I could specify the region), selected IGI, specified Catherine Fulton and set the region to British Isles. Please keep in mind that the LDS does NOT have all their information online (yet), but I wanted to see what was available. Also the indexes are never complete or fully accurate, so once you can zero in on a region, you would want to get the films of the parish records and review them yourself. In the book "In the Search of Your British & Irish Roots" by Angus Baxter, Genealogical Publishing Co, 1991, it states that the LDS Church has now completed microfilming and indexing the following records in the United Kingdom: England and Wales: Civil Registration of BMD 1837-1903. So if your Catherine was born after 1903, she will not be on the LDS films. What I found was the following: 161. Catherine FULTON - International Genealogical Index Gender: F Marriage: 17 Jun 1805 Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales Marriage(s): Spouse: Lewis BOOTH Marriage: 17 Jun 1805 Merthyr Tydfil, Glamorgan, Wales Film Number: 1985676 Based on the information you gave me, this Catherine Fulton is born too early. Although you said your David was born in PA, I decided to search for David (perhaps some of his ancestors were named David). 90. David FULTON - International Genealogical Index Gender: M Birth: 22 Apr 1866 Troedyrhiw, Glamorgan, Wales Parents: Father: Morgan FULTON Mother: Sarah THOMAS Source Information: Film Number: 177939 Page Number: 774 Reference Number: 27651 91. David FULTON - International Genealogical Index Gender: M Birth: 22 Apr 1866 Troedyrhiw, Glamorgan, Wales Parents: Father: Morgan FULTON Mother: Sarah THOMAS Film Number: 471063 92. David FULTON - International Genealogical Index Gender: M Birth: 22 Apr 1866 Troedyrhiw, Glamorgan, Wales Parents: Father: Morgan FULTON Mother: Sarah THOMAS Film Number: 178042 Page Number: 56 Reference Number: 1162 Then I re-did the search leaving the first/last name blank and specifying the father as Morgan Fulton and the mother as Sarah Thomas and the region as British Isles. This gives me a list of children whose father/mother are Morgan Fulton and Sarah Thomas, though they are NOT necesarily one family. In any case, it can help you to try to gather family units. Do any of the first names of the children listed below match any "naming" traditons in the your family ? 1. Ann FULTON - International Genealogical Index Gender: F Birth: 4 Dec 1873 , Wales 2. Visit the GENUKI home page at: http://www.genuki.org.uk/ It has excellent suggestions regarding how to research from abroad, and lists the addresses of the Family History Societies. In Pennsylvania where your David lived, try to determine if any of his neighbors or associates came from Wales. It may help to focus on a more specific geographic locality in Wales. Use ROOTSWEB's menu-driven interface to search the archives of the surname lists for the three notes listed below for a general discussion of Fulton origins. It can be reached at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Specify fulton-l, specify 1998, use search string Subject: Timeline for the first two notes. For the third note notice you need to specify 1997 and Subject: Early Foulton Subject: Timeline: Early Fulton Origins - Part I Resent-Date: Sun, 15 Feb 1998 13:00:25 -0800 (PST) Subject: Timeline: Early Fulton Origins - Part II Resent-Date: Sun, 15 Feb 1998 13:35:23 -0800 (PST) Subject: Early Foulton References in England 1086-1600 Resent-Date: Sun, 12 Oct 1997 14:05:23 -0700 (PDT) In the third note, I mentioned that in the book the MEMOIRS OF THE FULTONS OF LISBURN compiled by Sir Theodore C. Hope, privatley printed 1903, the author mentions three instances of Fulton in England, before he goes into describing Fultons in Scotland and Northern Ireland. He attributes the source of his informaton as Dr. Robert Valpy of Dunedin, New Zealand. On Page 9: "The Fultons appear to have been of Saxon origin, and at an early date to have migrated up the east coast, eventually settling in Ayrshire, where to this day they exist in considerable numbers. There is, however, reason to believe that the whole of the Fultons did not migrate to Scotland. It will be seen, in the remarks upon arms farther on, that there were in the time of the Crusades a certain knight, Sir de Fulton de Holt - presumable the place of that name in Norfolk - and, in 1604, a Fulton family in Shropshire." Shropshire is a county in England that borders Wales. Over a year ago, I tried to find out more about the location of HOLT in England. In an old book on placenames, I saw HOLT listed in the following old regions in England: Clwyd (modern map Holt is northeast of Wrexham) Wilts (could not find Holt in Wilts on a modern map) Dorset (modern map Holt is north of Poole) Norfolk (could not find Holt in Norfolk on a modern map). Both regions of Clwyd and Wilts are close to Wales. But the occurrences of early references to the surname in England in the mid 1200's point more to Essex and Norfolk, as listed in the source below: ******************************* A DICTIONARY OF ENGLISH SURNAMES, THE STANDARD GUIDE TO ENGLISH SURNAMES by P. Nf=Norfolk *********************************** Keep in mind that your family in Wales could have always had roots there, or could have migrated from Scotland or Northern Ireland to Wales in more modern times. If you have more information about your family, please share it with the list. One of our researchers on the list may be able to help you. I am always interested in the migraton paths of the Fultons, so if you could provide that information, I would appreciate it. It helps others to connect to lost lines. Thanks, Roberta R.
