Have you heard of any of this clan? > Sincerely, Betty Jane Fulton Garcia Dear Betty Jane, There are several distinct Fulton lines that resided in Clarion Co, PA, in Armstrong Co, PA and in Westmoreland Co, PA in the late 1700 early 1800's. Are you familiar with the widow Agnes line and the Abraham Fulton/Margaret Guthrie line ? If not, I recommend you use the search facilty for this list to look at the old notes on these lines. ROOTSWEB has now provided on menu-driven interface to search the archives of the discussion lists. It can be reached at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl Specify fulton-l, and then specify search strings such as widow Agnes or Guthrie - that will provide you access to much that has been previously been discussed on the list regarding these lines. There are several David Fultons in the widow Agnes branch born in the early 1800's as documented in Robert D. Fulton's book "The Family of Agnes Fulton", but they do not quite fit the profile of your David Fulton. Of course it is possible that Robert D. Fulton's material is incorrect or not complete (with this hobby, material is never "finished" and complete, but always evolving). By the way, Robert D. Fulton published the Fulton Family Letter newsletter for several years. Let me know if you are interested in borrowing a copy of them or the Fulton CD (approx 900 pages of information). Of interest is your Wayne Jackson Fulton 1895-1960 because the name JACKSON appears in the widow Agnes Fulton family. There are others studying the widow Agnes line such as Ben Fulton (who used to have a searchable widow Agnes Fulton data base online), Percy London, Homer Fulton, Ralph Fulton, Willis Knox. You will find them in the archives. SOURCE: Fulton, Robert Doyle, "The Family of Agnes Fulton (1750-1826)" privately published, 1980. He also provided corrections and revision in 1988, but I do not know if this has been microfilmed yet. Description: (p.11) Agnes Fulton (1750-1826) with her four sons James, Cochran, Henry, and Robert immigrated from County Derry (Londonderry) Ireland to Philadelphia in 1794. The voyage between Belfast and Philadelphia took 13 weeks and 3 days. The family remained in Westmoreland Co, PA until the Spring of 1801, when they joined other families moving to Armstrong Co, Pa. Because of the 6 year time frame (1794-1801) some speculate that she may have come from Ireland as an indentured servant. Judge Peter Clover, in his History of Clarion County, Pennsylvania, lists 10 men setting out from Eastern Pennsylvania in 1800. Agnes and her 3 sons are not among the group he lists, but he does mention Agnes Fulton and her three sons were among those who arrived in 1801 (Robert died in New Derry, Penn. in 1800). At that time they were living in a cabin well away from the settlement and apparently unknown to those in the settlement for some time. (p.13)James Jackson Fulton was born in County Derry, Ireland, and lived there until his mid teens when he came to America with his mother and three brothers in 1794. They first settled in Westmoreland County, Pennsylvania, and later moved to Clarion County, Pennsylvania. In the Fall of 1800 James and 10 others starting exploring western Pennsylvania on foot. They made their way to Rimersburg in the northwestern part of the state. They agreed that this was the place where they wished to settle their families. They decided that one would return to their home and return with the families. The one to make the trip was decided by casting lots - James made the return trip to Westmoreland County. He gathered the families. The caravan consisted of the women and children on horses carrying their cooking utensils and other articles. The men followed on foot. After a long and toilsome journey they reached their new home safely. They did not even have cabins or shanties in which to take shelter. They agreed all to work together, cut and carry logs and put up a building each day until there was a home for each family. The first table that James Fulton had was a puncheon split from a large log, holes bored in each end and stocks put in for legs. After the housing was completed they next cleared the land. Their food was what they could find -- deer, bear, wild turkey, etc. The clothing was home spun, both woolen and linen. The women had to card the wool which they spun by hand as described by James Nelson Craig. Flour was scarce and as a substitute they would boil wheat. This, with potatoes, and the game they killed, was their fare. Descendants settled in Clarion County, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Nebraska, California, Louisiana, Florida, Wyoming, Idaho and elsewhere. Intermarried families include Blankenbaker, Flitcraft, Hendrick, Hunsicker, Meyers.
