For the folks attending the Salt Lake City 1999 Reunion or for anyone using the local LDS centers, I recommend that you use the ONLINE Family History Catalog to help you determine BEFORE the visit the microfilm numbers and Book Call numbers that you want to look up. Enclosed at the bottom are brief directions to help you get started. I also highly recommend using the ONLINE LDS research outlines. They contain a wealth of information to help not only the beginning researcher, but also the highly experienced genealogist. They are outstanding guides, now all available free on the Internet. There are Outline Research Guides for each State, for Census, Immigration, Military. "A Guide to Research" is basic but even helps experienced researchers to "refocus". The outline on "The Family History Library Catalog" reviews how to use it on microfiche or on CD ROM, but I do not see one yet for the online version. But if you need a review of how the LDS categorizes so much of their information by Locality or the types of TOPICS/SUBJECTS, then it is essential reading. When you scan down the list for all the state guides, don't overlook scrolling down to the United States section for its research outline as well as the lists of outlines for census, military and immigration that are listed in the United States section. *************************************************************** To Find the LDS Research Outlines Online: Go to the LDS FamilySearch home page at url: http://www.familysearch.org/ Select BROWSE CATEGORIES (listed on left side of screen) Select RESEARCH SUPPORT Select SOURCEGUIDE Select HOW TO GUIDES button (Later on check out the Catalog Helper button) Scroll down and Select the specific guide of your interest. *************************************************************** Below is an example of how to get the film numbers for the census or deeds. Go to the LDS FamilySearch home page at url: http://www.familysearch.org/ Select BROWSE CATEGORIES (listed on left side of screen) Scroll down, select LIBRARIES Select FAMILY HISTORY LIBRARY CATALOG Select PLACE SEARCH [Later on check out Surname Search (to see the list of 76 Books and Manuscripts on Fulton) and All Searches (to check out by author, subject, title, microfilm number)] Fill in fields for PLACE and PART OF Example: Place Orange Part Of (optional) New York Place Search Results: Click on geographic area you want: NEW YORK, ORANGE Select Subject topic - Example: ORANGE COUNTY CENSUS OR for deeds Scroll to bottom Select [21-34] to see more subjects and then Select NEW YORK, ORANGE, - LAND & PROPERTY Select CENSUS RECORDS 1825-1875 Orange County, New York or for deeds select DEEDS, 1703-1900 INDEX to DEEDS ORANGE CO, NY In upper right hand corner select VIEW FILM NOTES The next screen will list the details of the location of the microfilm, the film number, and the item on the film for the particular census. Copy this information for your research trip, including the item number so you can wind quickly through the microfilm to the item you want. ******************************************************************************* I hope this helps you to prepare a list of microfilm numbers and book call numbers of materials you will want to look up. Just a hint about prioritizing: if a source does not list a microfilm number, then it is only available in hardcopy at Salt Lake City. That means that in the future, you cannot request the material from your Local Family History Center. Thus when at Salt Lake City, look at those items first and then the microfilm items, which usually you can request at the local center if you run out of time, although some microfilms are not distributed because of copyright restrictions by the author or government.
