Are we having fun, yet? I find it amazing that this Fulton + Wynkoop puzzle has presented us with three separate Davids Fulton who died between 1757 and 1770. Only one thing is for sure, they're not brothers! (1) David Fulton of Cheltenham, Philadelphia Co, PA, died 1757. (2) David Fulton of ???, Philadelphia Co, PA, died bet 1762-1769. (3) David Fulton of Ulster Co, New York, died 1770. Here's some additional information I've found regarding the two David Fultons of Philadelphia County, PA ... * * * * * (1) David Fulton of Cheltenham, Philadelphia Co, PA, d 1757 This David Fulton acquired land at Cheltenham as early as 1730. On 11 Dec 1733, James Fulton, son of David Fulton, was baptized at the Abington Presbyterian Church. David Fulton appears on the 1734 Cheltenham tax list. The Will of David Fulton, yeoman, of Cheltenham is recorded at Philadelphia Co, PA, in 1757. (Can anyone locate the full text of this will?) "Abstract of Wills of Philadelphia Co, PA", Vol. V 3/1912 p 200, submitted to our Fulton list back in 1997 by our very own Fulton sleuth, Dorothy K. Fulton of Arkansas. "David Fulton of Cheltenham Twp, Phil. Co, yeoman; died 11/3/1757, wife Judith; Abel Morgan son-in-law; mentions plantation purchased of Henry Slingo; Thomas Greer, his sister's son; Presby Cong at Abington; Enoch Morgan; Jos. Fulton, his brother's son; exec: friends Archibald McClean of Horsham & Robert McCurdy of Springfield Twp; adm to Judith Fulton, widow of David Fulton, 1/5/1758 exec. named having renounced." David Fulton-----(sister) Fulton------(brother) Fulton m Judith m (unknown) Greer m (unknown) | | | (dau) Fulton (nephew) Thomas Greer (nephew) Joseph Fulton m bef 1757 alive in 1757 alive in 1757 Abel Morgan Rev. Abel Morgan was an early minister of the Baptist Church. In 1712, Abel Morgan of the Pennypack Baptist Church founded the Montgomery Baptist Church. Could this possibly be the same man? Or, is David's son-in-law, the son of Rev. Abel Morgan? While we're at it, who is Enoch Morgan? Baptists? Yes, there was a strong Baptist community in Philadelphia County and Bucks County -- closely associated with the Welsh who had settled in the area. Welsh? Welsh Fultons? Just the other day, Tom Fulton of New York was explaining how he is a descendant of Welsh Fultons ... and I didn't believe him! Who is this David Fulton? Is he the father of the James Fulton baptized in 1733 at the Abington Church? Is this child, James Fulton, the same James who appears on the 1769 tax list for the Manor of Moreland? Are there other children of this man? Who is Judith? Oh, so many questions! * * * * * (2) David Fulton of ???, Philadelphia Co, PA, d bet 1762-1769 This David Fulton married on 30 March 1762, Helena (Van de Grift) Wynkoop, widow of Cornelius Wynkoop (1700-1754). She was 50-60 years old at the time of this marriage and I suspect that David was approximately the same age. This David Fulton cannot possibly be David Fulton of Cheltenham -- he died 5 years earlier. Cornelius Wynkoop was a long-time member of the Abington Presbyterian Church and he and his widow "Helena Fulton" are buried there. Cornelius, baptized in 1701 at the "Dutch Church" in Kingston, NY, came with his father Gerret Wynkoop to the Manor of Moreland before 1720. Gerret Wynkoop was an elder of the Abington Presbyterian church in 1728. Cornelius and Philip Wynkoop, sons of Gerret Wynkoop, lived their entire lives at the Manor of Moreland. Their father, Gerret, purchased land in Northampton, Bucks County, around 1730 and settled there. He then became an elder in the "Low Dutch" church at Neshaminy. In 1800, this Bucks County land was owned by descendants of Gerret's sons, Gerret and Nathaniel Wynkoop. I suspect that this David Fulton is the father of Robert Fulton who in 1755 married Eleanor "Nelle" Wynkoop, daughter of widow Helena (Van de Grift) Wynkoop. However, if the Wynkoops were such avid members of the Abington Church, why was this marriage held at the Christ Church in Philadelphia? Well, a few years earlier, on 17 Sept 1748, Elizabeth Fulton married William Stanley at the Christ Church in Philadelphia. Take a look at this church! http://www.ushistory.org/tour/_christc.html Why wouldn't you get married here? More important, who COULD get married here? (Imagine what you had to pay for the reception!) Elizabeth Fulton gets married here, Robert Fulton gets married here, and don't forget, a David Fulton marries Elizabeth Yerkes here 15 Oct 1755. OK -- we've got three Fultons married in this church: Elizabeth Fulton m William Standley/Stanley, 1748 Robert Fulton m Eleanor "Nelle" Wynkoop, 1755 David Fulton m Elizabeth Yerkes, 1755 Where did David Fulton, Senior, live? In the Manor of Moreland? Or, in Philadelphia? Or, in Lower Dublin Township? (Recall that we identified land of a David Fulton adjacent to land of Thomas Powell, deceased, 1753.) This David Fulton died after March 1762 and before the tax man prepared the 1769 tax list. A man with these connections should have a very interesting estate settlement. But where? * * * * * Hope you enjoy your "virtual tour" of Philadelphia! Patrice (Fulton) Stark Lone Tree, Colorado
