    1. Fulton + Wynkoop (Pt 17), from Dave Van Doren
    2. Patrice Fulton Stark
    3. Correspondent Dave Van Doren writes . . . * - * - * - * To all Fulton puzzle readers - Hi. After reading Patrice Fulton Stark's Pt 15 of the ongoing Fulton discussion, I pulled the family group sheet of Robert Fulton, Jr. and Sarah Powell up on my monitor. What's in a name immediately came to mind (the image can't be reproduced here, but the information is listed below). The names of the 5 sons of Robert and Sarah simply reek of family connections. Elisha Wynkoop, eldest son, has the same forename as his maternal grandfather, Elisha Powell, and the same middle name as his paternal grandmother' surname, Wynkoop. I had been willing to bet the ranch that his grandmother was a Wynkoop even before finding the record of a Robert Fulton marriage to an Eleanor Wyncoop, and of course I jumped on that bit of data like a duck on a June bug. Robert Massie, second son, has the same forename as his father and the same middle name as his maternal grandmother's surname, Massey (never mind the difference in spelling). David Powell, third son, has the same forename as his paternal uncle (not shown on the screen) and the same middle name as his maternal grandfather, Elisha Powell. The other two sons, John and William, whose names also are not shown on the screen, were forenames of younger brothers of Sarah Powell. The forenames of Sarah's other two brothers had already been used (Elisha and Robert). BUT, "how do I KNOW that?" Well, let's start at the "beginning" with David Powell Fulton, (actually I've only seen David P. Fulton in OH documents) who ended his days in Champaign Co, OH. According to Champaign Co, OH DAR cemetery records, a David P. Fulton d. 2-12-1865, b. 5-10-1797. Birth dates on tombstones are not necessarily "set in concrete", as it were, but his wife outlived him, so it is probably correct. Or at least its a reasonable bet that the Mrs. Jane Fulton who died in 1889 was the same Jane Carr who married a David Fulton in 1822 in Shenandoah Co, VA records (oops, that probably was the wrong county - better look it up again - although a Jane Carr married a David Fulton 23 May 1822 in Loudoun Co, VA according to a Carr family history found in the Thomas Balch library). What I DON'T KNOW for sure is whether the David P. Fulton (born in VA according to census records) of Champaign Co, OH was the David Powell Fulton, son of the Robert Fulton whose Will was recorded in Loudoun Co, VA 4 July 1836. The Will does mention a daughter-in-law, Jane E. Fulton, which helps strengthen the case. The birth date of David P. Fulton would "fit" the age of the third child of Robert and Sarah H. (Powell) Fulton. The siblings of David Powell Fulton are established in the above-mentioned Will. So, do we really KNOW who was David Powell Fulton's mother? The Will of Elisha Powell, 26 Feb 1796, lists his beloved daughter, Sarah H. Powell, now Salrah (sic) H. Fulton. Robert Fulton, Jr. and Sarah Powell had a marriage bond of 11 Sep 1792 in Loudoun Co. An Elisha Powell attested to the bride's age and consented to the marriage. The actual marriage took place 26 Sep 1792 in Loudoun Co. according to the IGI, which although not the most reliable source, at least has the wedding after the marriage bond rather than before it. I suppose we must ASSUME that the Elisha Powell of the marriage bond was the father of Sarah who married Robert Fulton, Jr, and Robert Fulton, Jr. was the Robert Fulton of the Will of 1836. I can live with those assumptions. Now, however, things become more dicey. Robert Fulton Jr's Misc Notes (see below) contain material that might or might not pertain to the father of David Powell Fulton. Then there are the questions of whether this Robert Fulton, Jr. was the Robert Fulton, son of Robert Fulton of the 1798 Will, and son of the Eleanor Wynkoop who married a Robert Fulton 20 Aug 1755 in Philadelphia, PA. Those questions have been discussed by the group in previous parts of the ongoing debate. All I can add to this part of the discussion is that when peering at the picture on my monitor, it sure LOOKS like it all hangs together. If not, computer files are easily changed.
