    1. Fulton + Wynkoop (Pt 18)

    3. Is there a light at the end of this Fulton + Wynkoop tunnel? (I think so.) Prudent genealogists work from the present to the past. In an effort to shed more light on the Fulton family(ies?) living in Loudoun Co, VA, I studied the 1810 US Census information. ------------------------------------------------------ There is no 1790 or 1800 US Census for Loudoun County. ------------------------------------------------------ I found two separate indexes for the 1810 US Census. (1) Crickard, Madeline W. "Index to 1810 Virginia Census" (Parsons, West Virginia: McClain Printing Company) 1971. (2) Bentley, Elizabeth Petty. "Index to the 1810 Census of Virginia" (Baltimore, MD: Genealogical Publishing Company) 1980. The Crickard index is an alphabetical list of every entry. The author did not include page numbers so it is virtually impossible to match her list to the original record or determine the relative location of the various families. She identified these five Fultons: Abraham George John Robert Susan The Bentley index is alphabetical and includes the page number where the name is found. She identified these six Fultons in Loudoun County: Abe. 236 David 232 Geo. 298 John 243 Robert 240 Susan 291 Notice that Bentley did not change the first name abbreviations. Another good practice to follow! When I realized that Bentley found more Fultons, I double-checked Crickard's list and found the missing David -- identified as David FEELTON. There's another spelling variant we need to add to our list! * * * * * * * * * * Age brackets reported in 1810 Census Col. 1: male und 10 | Col. 6: female und 10 Col. 2: male 10 und 16 | Col. 7: female 10 und 16 Col. 3: male 16 und 26 | Col. 8: female 16 und 26 Col. 4: male 26 und 45 | Col. 9: female 26 und 45 Col. 5: male 45 over | Col. I'm suspicious that the Neal/Fulton households may be an important clue for Donna Price and Connie Balazic, descendants of Neal Fulton of Saline County, Missouri. Donna recently found that a "Neel" Fulton enlisted in Regiment 57 at Loudoun Co, VA, for service during the War of 1812. In 1821, her Neal Fulton married Lucy Harris at Saline Co, Missouri. I've copied all the names from Cornelius Wynkoop to William Campbell for a reason. On 16 January 1809, William Campbell married Jane Wynkoop, daughter of Cornelius Wynkoop. Sec. Garrad Wynkoop test girl is 21. Andrew Campbell, father of groom, consented. Cornelius Wynkoop, father of girl, con'd & test. his daughter was born 14 December 1787. [Jewell, "Marriages," op cit., page 16.] The names Cornelius, Garrad/Gerrit, and Philip are consistent with the Wynkoop/Winecoop families at the Manor of Moreland in Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania. Notice that Philip uses the second spelling, "Winecoop." Look back at the entry for Cornelius Wynkoop. Both Cornelius and the oldest female in the house are "45 and over", born 1765 or before. On 25 January 1787, Cornelius "Wyncoop" married Margaret Fulton at Montgomery Co., PA. [Marriage Records, Presbyterian Church, Abington, Montgomery Co., PA.] If we can prove that Cornelius, Garrad/Gerrit, and Philip Wynkoop/Wincoop of Loudoun County, VA, are connected to this marriage at the Abington Church in Montgomery County, then we are on our way to proving that Robert Fulton who died in 1798 at Loudoun County, was the same man who married Eleanor Wynkoop in 1755! Can anyone find a deed or other court document in Loudoun County identifying the wife of Cornelius Wynkoop? [Ref: Marriage Licenses of Frederick Co, MD, 1778-1810.] Checking the Crickard list of families, there was a "Dossy Jacobs" in the 1810 Census. Therefore, daughter Elizabeth is not in this household. I'm going to put the Hugh Fulton family on hold for a moment. I have more information and it appears that this Hugh Fulton may be connected to the Fultons of Frederick County, Maryland. A George Fulton and family (same one?) was living in Frederick County, Maryland, in 1800. * * * * * Yes, there's more. I feel like this Fulton + Wynkoop thread is a piece of sticky flypaper. I just can't get it off my fingers! I copied all Fulton Census information for 1810, 1820, 1830 and 1840 in Loudoun County. I wish I had followed those Wynkoops! (Maybe next time.)
