If you ever wondered why all the Fultons named their children by the same names, there were only approximately twenty given first names used by the Scots Irish during the early settlement days. By now, we know what most of those twenty names were: Hugh, John, James, William, Andrew, David, Joseph, Isaac, Samuel, Robert, Thomas, Mary, Martha, Elizabeth, Elinor, Jane (Jean), Ann, Margaret, Janet, Eunice. They gradually picked up other names as they went along but these are the most common ones you will see. There were a few nicknames Nancy, Peggy, Polly, Betsey, and Sally......Nancy was a nickname for Mary Agnes, Peggy for Margaret, Polly for Mary and Sally for Sarah.
