Folks, Although I have provided these directions before, I am posting them again for those who may have missed them. ROOTSWEB has now provided a menu-driven interface to search the archives of the discussion lists. It can be reached at: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl It is a very powerful search engine, is easy to use, and can be used to search ANY of the discussion lists at ROOTSWEB by specifying the list of interest, even if you have not subscribed to the list. In any case, to search our Fulton list, here are the directions: 1) Go to URL: http://searches.rootsweb.com/cgi-bin/listsearch.pl 2) On first panel in the mailing list box type fulton-l or fulton and hit the SUBMIT QUERY button. 3) On the next panel in the Query box specify a keyword, such as Guthrie and the year 1997. You can also specify a specific date in quotes such as "25 Nov 1998" . Select a database year 1998. Hit the SEARCH button. 4) On the next panel you will see a list of notes that contain the keyword you specified. The Subject may give you an idea of the contents of the note (a reason why it is so important to make the subject very specific and not generic). Click on FULL to see the contents of the note. Use your browser's EDIT FIND feature to quickly locate the keyword. After you try searching several times, you will see that it is a very useful search engine. By the way, suppose you had to unsubscribe from a list for vacation, and you wanted to see what queries you missed in Dec 1998. Specify the keyword "Dec 1998" with the quotes and only one space between the Dec and the year. It will show you all the notes sent to the list for that month. For a list of all the mailing lists (both surname and geographic), check out the web page at: http://lists.rootsweb.com/ On this page you can find out the names of other mailing lists that may be of interest to your search such as the surname Gillespie or the location PALANCAS (for Lancaster, PA) or PA-BIO for Pennsylvania biographies. Have fun searching. Roberta R.
