    3. Rich: There is one thing we need to consider when we are trying to determine the surname of Thomas Fulton's wife Margaret. He most likely married in Ireland. James d. 1753 was married and had several children when he came to Augusta Co. in 1739. His eldest son as b. in 1727 was 12 yrs old when he came to Augusta.. Any marriages occurring in Augusta Co. as late as 1751 are prob. of the next generation. Thomas Fulton obtained a marriage license to marry in Augusta Co. in 1751. His spouse was not named. His spouse's first name was Margaret according to his estate settlement. There is also a Thomas Fulton that owned a lot of land, who ended up in debtor's prison and finally absconded. His wife's name is Elizabeth. Likewise William Patton d. 1793, was in Augusta Co near the same time as the Fultons arrived there. He was a very old man when he died. Some of the William Patton references you see are those of his nephew William Patton b. 1742, d. 1806. Charles Patton was the brother of William Patton, Sr. and Elizabeth Patton and others. There was also a Charles Patton, Jr. that married Elizabeth Fulton in 1822. I have to agree I do believe there is an error in my records re: Elizabeth & Margaret, but I am not sure which way it is at the moment. The names were transposed in one account or the other. With guests practically on my threshold, I can't take time to review it right now. Likewise William Fulton obtained a marriage license to wed on 2 Oct. 1759. Spouse name not given. Further research was needed to determine the correct spouse. Chalkley had omitted William Fulton's will altogether. Again, evidence was found via his missing will and the spouse's Lusk family. Again many Wm. Fultons but some never married. At one point, it was thought that Elizabeth Patton was married to Thomas Fulton. However, later research showed that she married John Caldwell and that she was the dau. of Mary Fulton, father deceased. (Dau. of James Fulton, II, proved via guardianship records. There were only about 20 given names used among the family during this era so you will find many multiples. Norma
